Chapter 1: The Final Slap

Chapter 1: The Final Slap

The grand ballroom of the Sterling Estate glittered beneath a forest of crystal chandeliers, every surface polished until it reflected the wealth and prestige the Sterling family loved to display. Hundreds of distinguished guests filled the room, dressed in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns, raising crystal flutes in celebration of baby Leo's hundredth day.

A string quartet played softly in the corner.

Champagne flowed without interruption.

Laughter echoed through the mansion.

To every guest in attendance, it looked like the perfect family celebration.

Only one man knew it was all an illusion.

Ethan Sterling stood near the back of the ballroom, wearing a simple charcoal suit that had already become the subject of whispered ridicule. He held a tray of champagne glasses because, according to his mother-in-law, a "freeloader" should at least make himself useful during the party.

No one questioned why the baby's father was serving drinks instead of standing beside his wife.

No one dared.

Most of them had heard Evelyn Sterling's version of the story countless times.

"Ethan contributes nothing."

"He lives off Victoria's success."

"If it weren't for my daughter, he'd be sleeping on the streets."

After hearing the lie repeated often enough, people stopped wondering whether it was true.

They simply accepted it.

Across the ballroom, Victoria Sterling stood beneath the spotlight wearing an elegant ivory evening gown that had cost more than most families earned in a month. Diamonds sparkled around her neck as she smiled gracefully for photographers, accepting congratulations from business partners and socialites alike.

She looked every bit the image of a successful executive.

Not once did she glance toward her husband.

Not once did she ask whether he had eaten.

Not once did she notice that he had been on his feet for nearly six hours.

Ethan had grown accustomed to being invisible.

Three years earlier, he would have been hurt.

Now...

He simply felt tired.

The only person who still looked at him with unconditional love was sleeping peacefully upstairs.

Little Leo.

Their son.

Ethan allowed himself a small smile at the thought.

Everything he had endured was worth it for that little boy.

A burst of exaggerated laughter suddenly interrupted his thoughts.

Evelyn Sterling dramatically stumbled backward, throwing one hand into the air as if someone had shoved her with tremendous force.

Her body crashed against a dessert table.

Crystal glasses shattered across the marble floor.

The ballroom instantly fell silent.

Guests gasped.

Several women screamed.

Evelyn clutched her wrist and cried out in theatrical agony.

"He pushed me!"

Every head turned.

Every eye landed on Ethan.

He hadn't moved.

He was still holding the silver serving tray exactly where he had been standing.

Yet Evelyn pointed directly at him with trembling fingers.

"It was him!"

"He attacked me!"

The silence lasted only a heartbeat.

Then Victoria stormed across the ballroom in towering high heels, fury burning in her eyes.

"Ethan!"

Without asking a single question...

Without giving him even one chance to explain...

She raised her hand.

Crack!

The slap echoed through the ballroom.

His head turned sharply from the force.

A faint red mark immediately appeared across his cheek.

No one spoke.

No one intervened.

Victoria's breathing grew heavier as she glared at him.

"Have you completely lost your mind?"

"My mother welcomed you into this family!"

"She fed you!"

"She gave you a home!"

"And this is how you repay her?"

Ethan slowly turned back to face her.

His expression remained calm.

Almost empty.

"I never touched her."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"You expect anyone to believe that?"

Evelyn began sobbing louder.

"My wrist..."

"I think it's broken..."

"I've always treated him like my own son..."

"Why does he hate me so much?"

Several guests rushed to comfort the older woman.

Others looked at Ethan with open disgust.

Someone whispered loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

"I always knew he had a temper."

Another guest shook his head.

"Victoria deserves better."

Harrison Hunt stepped forward at exactly the right moment.

Perfect timing.

As always.

He gently placed one arm around Victoria's shoulders.

"Victoria..."

"Don't upset yourself."

"I'll handle this."

Ethan watched the scene unfold without saying a word.

For months...

No.

For years.

Harrison had inserted himself into every corner of their marriage.

Business meetings.

Family dinners.

Holiday celebrations.

Victoria had never noticed.

Or perhaps...

She simply didn't care anymore.

Harrison walked toward Ethan with the confidence of a man who believed he already owned everything.

"If you have even a shred of dignity left..."

He looked Ethan directly in the eyes.

"...kneel."

The room became impossibly quiet.

Harrison smiled.

"Apologize to Mrs. Sterling."

"And maybe she'll forgive you."

Evelyn nodded dramatically through fake tears.

"Yes."

"He should kneel."

"He owes this family everything."

Guests began murmuring in agreement.

"Kneel."

"Just apologize."

"Stop embarrassing everyone."

Victoria folded her arms across her chest.

"Ethan."

"This is your last chance."

The words hung heavily in the air.

For several long seconds...

Ethan didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't speak.

Then...

Very slowly...

He reached toward his left hand.

His wedding ring caught the light beneath the crystal chandelier.

Three years.

One promise.

Countless sacrifices.

Without hesitation...

He slipped the ring from his finger.

The ballroom watched in stunned silence as Ethan walked to the nearest champagne tower.

He held the ring above the top glass.

Victoria frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Ethan looked at her one final time.

His voice was calm.

Steady.

Completely free of anger.

"No."

The single word echoed across the silent ballroom.

Then...

He released the ring.

Plink.

The gold band disappeared beneath the bubbling champagne.

No one breathed.

No one moved.

Ethan looked directly into Victoria's eyes.

"Our marriage..."

May you like

"...ends here."
