Chapter 4: Desperate Pleas

Chapter 4: Desperate Pleas

By sunrise, the Sterling mansion no longer felt like the home of one of San Francisco's most respected families.

It felt like a command center under siege.

Every conference room was occupied.

Every phone line was busy.

Lawyers rushed through the marble hallways carrying stacks of contracts. Financial advisors argued over spreadsheets projected onto giant screens. Public relations consultants drafted statements they knew no one would believe.

Outside the estate, dozens of news vans lined the street.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Reporters crowded against the front gate, shouting questions at every employee who entered or left.

STERLING GROUP IN CRISIS

APEX TERMINATES ALL CONTRACTS

WHO WILL SAVE THE STERLING EMPIRE?

The headlines spread across every major financial website before breakfast.

Victoria hadn't slept.

She still wore the same ivory gown from Leo's celebration, though it was now wrinkled and stained from spilled champagne.

Her makeup had long since faded.

Dark circles framed her exhausted eyes.

She stood at the end of the conference table as Daniel Brooks projected the company's latest financial report onto the wall.

No one spoke.

No one wanted to.

Daniel finally cleared his throat.

"As of this morning..."

"Our market value has fallen by forty-three percent."

The room remained silent.

He clicked to the next slide.

"Six banks have frozen our credit facilities."

Another click.

"Three institutional investors have withdrawn."

Another.

"Two suppliers have suspended shipments."

The final slide appeared.

Bright red numbers filled the screen.

Available Cash: $18.7 Million

Debt Due Within 24 Hours: $120 Million

Victoria slowly lowered herself into a chair.

"How long?"

Daniel looked at her with sympathy.

"If nothing changes..."

"...forty-eight hours."

The words landed like a death sentence.

Across the room, Evelyn slammed both hands against the table.

"This is ridiculous!"

"We've done business with Apex for years!"

"They can't do this!"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"They already have."

"There has to be someone above them."

"There is."

"Then call him!"

Daniel hesitated.

"No one seems to know who made the decision."

"What do you mean?"

"The cancellation order came directly from Apex's executive office."

"No signatures."

"No explanation."

"Just one sentence."

Victoria looked up.

"What sentence?"

Daniel swallowed.

"'This decision is final.'"

Harrison Hunt paced the room with his phone pressed against his ear.

"Answer."

"Come on, Dad..."

"Answer!"

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

His frustration slowly turned into fear.

Finally, another call came in.

His face brightened.

"Dad?"

Instead, an unfamiliar voice answered.

"Mr. Hunt?"

"This is Special Agent Michael Carter with the Internal Revenue Service."

Harrison froze.

"...What?"

"We need to speak with you immediately."

"My father?"

"Your father is currently unavailable."

"What does that mean?"

There was a brief pause.

"He was taken into federal custody approximately thirty minutes ago."

The phone nearly slipped from Harrison's hand.

"No..."

"There must be some mistake."

"I'm afraid there isn't."

"We also have search warrants for Hunt Capital."

"And your personal financial records."

The call ended.

Harrison stood perfectly still.

His face had gone completely white.

Victoria walked toward him.

"Harrison?"

He didn't respond.

"Harrison."

She grabbed his arm.

"What happened?"

He looked at her as if he barely recognized where he was.

"They arrested him."

"Who?"

"My father."

The conference room erupted.

"What?"

"Impossible!"

"For what?"

Harrison could barely force out the words.

"Tax evasion..."

"...money laundering..."

"...wire fraud..."

Evelyn stumbled backward into a chair.

"This can't be happening."

Within minutes, another executive rushed into the room carrying a tablet.

"You need to see this."

Every eye turned toward the screen.

Breaking news filled the display.

Federal agents wearing FBI jackets were escorting Richard Hunt out of his waterfront mansion in handcuffs.

Television cameras flashed relentlessly.

Reporters shouted questions.

Richard Hunt refused to look at anyone.

Behind him, agents carried boxes filled with financial records and computer equipment.

The news anchor spoke rapidly.

"Authorities confirmed that Hunt Capital has become the subject of a large-scale federal investigation involving offshore accounts, shell corporations, and suspected money laundering."

The camera switched to aerial footage.

Luxury vehicles were being loaded onto tow trucks.

The mansion had been sealed with federal evidence tape.

Harrison stared in horror.

Years of prestige...

Gone in a single morning.

His phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Then another.

Then another.

Each one was worse than the last.

Your accounts have been temporarily frozen.

Pending federal review.

Do not dispose of assets.

Harrison suddenly understood.

Someone hadn't simply attacked the Sterling family.

Someone had erased his family too.

And they had done it overnight.

Across the room, Daniel received another email.

His eyes widened.

"What now?"

Victoria asked weakly.

Daniel slowly looked up.

"Apex Corporation..."

"They've announced an emergency gala."

Evelyn frowned.

"A gala?"

Daniel nodded.

"It will be held tomorrow evening."

"Why?"

"They're introducing their new Supreme Chairman."

The room fell silent.

Daniel continued reading.

"The invitation states that all major investors, Fortune 500 executives, governors, senators, and international business leaders are expected to attend."

Victoria frowned.

"So?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"If anyone can reverse Apex's decision..."

"...it would be the new Chairman."

Hope.

For the first time since the nightmare began...

A tiny spark of hope appeared.

Victoria immediately stood.

"I need an invitation."

Daniel nodded.

"You already have one."

She blinked.

"I do?"

"As CEO of Sterling Group."

She grabbed the elegant black envelope from the table.

Embossed in gold were the words:

Apex Corporation

Private Chairman's Reception

Grand Hyatt San Francisco

Tomorrow.

One chance.

One final opportunity.

That evening...

Victoria stood alone in her dressing room.

Designer gowns covered every wall.

Diamond necklaces glittered beneath soft lights.

Luxury handbags filled custom shelves.

Everything represented the life she refused to lose.

She slowly touched the mirror.

"I can fix this."

She whispered it again.

"I have to."

She chose her most elegant midnight-blue couture gown.

If the new Chairman wanted confidence...

She would appear confident.

If he respected power...

She would project strength.

If he valued humility...

She would beg.

She didn't care which.

The Sterling family had no other options.

Miles away, high above the city...

Inside the penthouse office of Vance Tower...

Silas entered quietly.

"The invitations have all been accepted, sir."

Ethan continued reading a financial report.

"And the guest list?"

"Every major figure in North American finance will attend."

Silas placed another folder on the desk.

"There is one additional matter."

Ethan looked up.

"Victoria Sterling confirmed her attendance."

Silence.

Silas waited.

"Should security deny her entry?"

Ethan closed the report.

A faint smile—cold and unreadable—appeared for the first time.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"Let her come."

Silas understood immediately.

Tomorrow night would not simply be another corporate gala.

It would be the moment the entire financial world discovered the true identity of the man the Sterling family had called a useless freeloader.

May you like

And for Victoria...

The night she believed would save her future was about to become the night that destroyed the last illusion she still clung to.
