Chapter 3: The Illusion of Victory

Chapter 3: The Illusion of Victory

The music returned.

Champagne flowed once more.

Within fifteen minutes of Ethan's departure, the Sterling mansion was alive with laughter again, as if nothing significant had happened.

A violinist resumed the melody that had been interrupted.

Waiters replaced the shattered glasses.

Housekeepers quietly wiped away the evidence of Evelyn's dramatic fall.

To everyone in attendance, the crisis had passed.

Only Victoria couldn't stop staring at the ballroom entrance.

For reasons she couldn't explain, an uneasy feeling settled deep in her chest.

"Ethan..."

She whispered his name almost unconsciously.

"Victoria."

Harrison's cheerful voice snapped her back to reality.

He stepped beside her, offering another glass of champagne.

"Forget about him."

"You've wasted enough years trying to fix someone who never deserved you."

Victoria accepted the glass but didn't drink.

"He wasn't always like this."

Harrison smiled sympathetically.

"People change."

"No."

Evelyn interrupted as she approached, her wrist now miraculously free of pain.

"He finally showed everyone who he really is."

She raised her own champagne glass.

"Let's not allow one selfish man to ruin Leo's celebration."

Several guests applauded.

"To the Sterling family!"

"To new beginnings!"

Crystal glasses clinked throughout the ballroom.

Only Victoria remained silent.

Across the room, the Sterling Group's senior executives gathered around Harrison.

One of them smiled broadly.

"Mr. Hunt, congratulations."

"We heard Apex Corporation is ready to finalize the partnership."

Harrison adjusted his cufflinks proudly.

"They are."

"One hundred million dollars."

"Signing ceremony next week."

Another executive whistled.

"That contract alone will double Sterling's valuation."

Harrison grinned.

"By this time next year..."

"...Sterling Group will be competing with companies twice its size."

The executives exchanged excited looks.

Someone laughed.

"Looks like getting rid of Ethan was the best business decision you've ever made."

The group erupted in laughter.

None of them noticed one of the younger managers checking his phone.

His face slowly lost all color.

He blinked.

Then checked the screen again.

"No..."

He whispered.

"That can't be right."

Inside a sleek conference room forty miles away...

Executives at Apex Corporation stood as Silas entered.

No introduction was necessary.

Every person in the room recognized him.

The legendary chief steward of the Vance Syndicate.

Silas placed a single black folder on the conference table.

"Gentlemen."

"The Chairman has issued new directives."

The CEO swallowed nervously.

"We're listening."

Silas opened the folder.

"Effective immediately..."

"Apex Corporation will terminate every partnership, investment agreement, supplier contract, consulting arrangement, and financial commitment associated with the Sterling Group."

Silence.

One board member hesitated.

"Sir..."

"The penalties for canceling those agreements—"

"We'll pay them."

Another executive frowned.

"The losses could exceed seventy million dollars."

Silas closed the folder.

"The Chairman considers it a worthwhile investment."

No one asked another question.

Everyone understood.

When Vance gave an order...

The discussion was already over.

Back at the Sterling mansion...

Victoria finally forced herself to smile as photographers gathered for a family picture.

"Evelyn, over here."

"Harrison, stand closer."

"Victoria, just a little to the left."

Flash.

Flash.

Flash.

The cameras never stopped.

Just as the photographer prepared for another shot...

Victoria's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

CFO – Daniel Brooks

She answered immediately.

"Daniel?"

The man's voice trembled.

"Ms. Sterling..."

"You need to leave the party."

Her smile disappeared.

"What happened?"

"It's Apex."

"What about them?"

"They just..."

He struggled to breathe.

"They canceled everything."

Victoria frowned.

"What do you mean everything?"

"I mean..."

"Everything."

"Our supply agreement."

"Our investment package."

"The software integration."

"The logistics partnership."

"The expansion financing."

"They terminated every contract."

Victoria stared blankly ahead.

"There must be some mistake."

"I thought so too."

"But they also sent legal notices demanding immediate repayment of outstanding obligations."

"How much?"

Daniel's silence lasted two seconds.

Then—

"One hundred twenty million dollars."

The champagne glass slipped from Victoria's fingers.

It shattered across the marble floor.

The entire ballroom turned toward her.

"Victoria?"

Evelyn rushed over.

"What happened?"

Victoria couldn't answer.

Daniel was still speaking.

"Our banks are panicking."

"Investors have begun dumping Sterling stock."

"The share price has already fallen twenty-two percent."

As he spoke...

The number changed.

"Twenty-eight..."

Another pause.

"Thirty-four..."

His breathing became ragged.

"It's still dropping."

Victoria felt the room spinning.

"No..."

"This isn't possible."

"It is."

"The market thinks we're finished."

Within minutes...

Phones began ringing throughout the ballroom.

Executives stepped aside to answer.

Each conversation looked worse than the last.

"My God..."

"Our investors are pulling out."

"Cancel tomorrow's meeting."

"Call legal."

One elderly shareholder approached Victoria with panic written across his face.

"Is the Apex deal really dead?"

She couldn't answer.

Another investor shouted from across the room.

"My broker says Sterling stock is in free fall!"

Guests who had been smiling only moments earlier quietly began leaving.

No one wanted to be associated with a collapsing empire.

The festive atmosphere evaporated.

Replacing it...

Was fear.

Harrison grabbed his own phone.

He dialed the CEO of Apex Corporation.

Voicemail.

He called again.

No answer.

Again.

Again.

Nothing.

"This makes no sense."

He muttered.

"They wouldn't destroy a hundred-million-dollar deal without talking to me."

His phone buzzed.

For one brief second...

He smiled.

Then he read the message.

His smile vanished.

"What?"

Victoria looked at him desperately.

"What is it?"

Harrison slowly lowered the phone.

"My father's company..."

"What about it?"

"The federal government..."

He swallowed hard.

"They've frozen several of our accounts."

Evelyn frowned.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Another message arrived.

Then another.

Then another.

Harrison's hands began shaking.

"This..."

"This can't be happening."

The ballroom doors burst open.

Daniel Brooks, the Sterling CFO, ran inside, still wearing his office coat.

He was breathing so hard he could barely speak.

"We're..."

"We're in serious trouble."

Everyone stared.

Daniel looked directly at Victoria.

"The New York Stock Exchange just suspended trading of Sterling shares."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Daniel finished the sentence no one wanted to hear.

"Our company..."

"...may not survive the week."

Outside, beyond the glowing windows of the Sterling mansion, black clouds gathered over San Francisco.

Far across the city, inside the top floor of Vance Tower, Ethan calmly signed another document.

Silas accepted the folder.

"The first phase is complete."

Ethan looked out over the city lights.

"Good."

"What's next, sir?"

Ethan's expression never changed.

May you like

"Now..."

"...they begin to understand what they threw away."
