Chapter 9: Six Hours in the Snow

Chapter 9: Six Hours in the Snow
Six months later...
Winter had transformed Northern California.
A rare Arctic storm swept across the Bay Area, coating the hills in white and sending temperatures to record lows. News stations urged residents to remain indoors, warning of dangerous wind chills and icy roads.
Inside Vance Manor, however, warmth filled every corner.
The fireplaces crackled softly.
Christmas lights shimmered across the towering cedar trees that lined the estate.
The scent of cinnamon and fresh pine drifted through the halls.
For the first time in years, the mansion felt like a home instead of a fortress.
Leo sat cross-legged in front of the fireplace, carefully coloring a picture of Santa Claus.
His cheeks had grown fuller.
His laughter came easily now.
The fearful little boy who used to hide whenever adults raised their voices had slowly disappeared.
Ethan watched quietly from a nearby sofa.
Every few minutes, Leo looked up.
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Does Santa really know everybody?"
Ethan smiled.
"I think he tries."
Leo considered that answer carefully.
"Then maybe..."
"...he knows Mommy too."
The room fell silent.
Silas glanced toward Ethan but wisely remained quiet.
Ethan set aside the book he had been reading.
"He probably does."
Leo smiled.
"I hope he tells her I miss her."
Those innocent words lingered in the room long after Leo returned to coloring.
Outside...
Snow continued falling.
At the massive wrought-iron gates of Vance Manor, a lone figure slowly approached through the storm.
She wore an old gray coat several sizes too large.
Cheap boots with cracked soles.
Thin gloves that did little to protect her hands from the bitter cold.
Victoria.
She looked nothing like the elegant CEO who had once commanded boardrooms.
Months of exhausting factory work had left her noticeably thinner.
Her once perfectly styled hair now rested unevenly against her shoulders.
Dark circles surrounded tired eyes that no longer carried pride.
Only regret.
She stopped in front of the security intercom.
For nearly a minute...
She couldn't bring herself to press the button.
Finally...
Her trembling finger reached forward.
Inside the security office...
An alarm sounded.
One guard checked the monitor.
His expression changed immediately.
"Sir..."
Silas looked up.
"What is it?"
"It's..."
He hesitated.
"Mrs. Sterling."
Silas walked over to the screen.
Victoria stood outside the gate, clutching a small paper bag against her chest.
Snow collected on her shoulders.
She looked exhausted.
Silas quietly left the security office.
A few moments later...
He entered Ethan's study.
"Sir."
Ethan looked up from a stack of documents.
"Yes?"
"Victoria is outside."
Silence.
"She has requested permission to speak with you."
Ethan closed the folder.
"Did she bring anyone?"
"No."
"Media?"
"None."
"Lawyers?"
"No."
He stood and walked toward the window overlooking the front entrance.
Even from that distance...
He could see her kneeling in the snow.
Motionless.
"What does she want?"
Silas answered softly.
"She says..."
"...she isn't asking to come back."
Outside the gate...
Victoria's voice trembled through the intercom.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness."
"I know I can't undo what I did."
"I only..."
She struggled to continue.
"I only want to see Leo."
The guard remained silent.
She continued.
"I'll work."
"I'll clean."
"I'll cook."
"I'll become a maid."
"I'll taste every meal before anyone else eats."
"You'll never have to trust me."
"I just..."
"...please let me see my son."
Only the wind answered.
Minutes became hours.
Snow continued falling.
Victoria remained on her knees.
Passing drivers occasionally slowed to stare before continuing down the road.
None recognized the woman who had once appeared on magazine covers.
The cold gradually numbed her hands.
Then her feet.
Still...
She didn't move.
Inside the manor...
Leo had gone upstairs for his afternoon nap.
Silas quietly approached Ethan once again.
"Sir..."
"She's still there."
"How long?"
"Almost three hours."
Ethan said nothing.
Silas hesitated.
"The temperature is dropping rapidly."
"I know."
Silence settled between them.
Finally...
Silas spoke.
"If I may..."
Ethan looked toward him.
"She truly seems broken."
Ethan walked slowly onto the balcony overlooking the front gate.
The freezing wind immediately swept across the stone terrace.
Far below...
Victoria remained exactly where she had begun.
Small.
Alone.
Barely visible beneath the falling snow.
For a long moment...
Neither of them moved.
A memory surfaced without warning.
Three years earlier.
A rainy evening.
Ethan had returned home with a severe fever.
One hundred four degrees.
His clothes were soaked after walking home because the family driver had refused to pick him up.
He had barely reached the kitchen before collapsing against the counter.
Victoria had looked up from her phone.
"You tracked mud across the floor."
He had apologized quietly.
Trying to wipe the water away.
Then Evelyn had deliberately knocked a bowl of steaming soup onto the marble tiles.
She pointed toward the mess.
"Clean it."
Ethan could barely stand.
"My fever..."
Evelyn laughed.
"So?"
Victoria never defended him.
Instead, she had folded her arms.
"If you made the mess..."
"...clean it."
He had knelt for nearly an hour, dizzy and shivering, scrubbing the floor while they ate dinner.
Not once had anyone asked whether he needed a doctor.
The memory faded.
Ethan looked once more toward the gate.
Silas quietly broke the silence.
"What are your orders?"
Ethan's expression remained unreadable.
"Leave the gate closed."
Silas nodded slowly.
"As you wish."
No anger.
No cruelty.
Simply finality.
Some doors...
Once closed...
Could never be opened again.
By the fifth hour...
Victoria could no longer feel her fingers.
Her lips had turned blue.
She whispered toward the silent estate.
"Ethan..."
"I'm sorry."
"I'm so..."
Her voice cracked.
"...sorry."
The wind carried the words away.
No answer came.
As darkness settled over the estate, Leo quietly entered the balcony wrapped in a warm blanket.
"Daddy?"
Ethan immediately knelt beside him.
"You should be inside."
Leo looked toward the distant gate.
"Who's that?"
Ethan followed his son's gaze.
For several seconds...
He considered the question.
Finally...
He answered honestly.
"Someone who made many mistakes."
Leo tilted his head.
"Is she cold?"
"Yes."
The little boy frowned.
"Can we give her a blanket?"
Ethan looked at his son.
The innocence in Leo's eyes reminded him why hatred could never become the foundation of the future he wanted to build.
He turned to Silas.
"Send the medical team."
"But..."
"They are not to open the gate."
"They are to leave blankets, hot food, and a heater outside."
"And call an ambulance if necessary."
Silas smiled faintly.
"Understood."
Mercy...
Without reopening the past.
An hour later...
Victoria opened tear-filled eyes.
Beside her rested a thermal blanket.
A container of hot soup.
A portable heater.
No note.
No message.
No invitation.
Only quiet compassion.
She understood immediately.
Ethan had not forgotten how to be kind.
He had simply learned the difference between kindness...
And giving someone another chance to break his heart.
Victoria pulled the blanket around herself and cried silently into the falling snow.
Not because she had been rejected.
But because she finally understood the kind of man she had lost.
May you like
A man who would help even the person who had destroyed him...
Without ever asking for anything in return.
