Chapter 7 - THE DEATH OF EDWARD THORNEEdward Thorne’s death had built the empire Marcus inherited.

Before the accident, Edward controlled the family trust.
Afterward, Victoria became trustee until Marcus turned thirty-five.
She used that power to reshape the company.
She removed longtime employees.
She replaced independent advisers with loyal friends.
She taught Marcus that survival required absolute obedience.
Marcus had never questioned the official report.
Now Detective Brooks placed a copy on the table.
“There were inconsistencies.”
“The boat was found twelve miles from where Victoria said the accident happened.”
“The emergency beacon had been disabled.”
“Your father’s life jacket was still stored beneath the seat.”
Marcus read each line.
“Why was this not investigated?”
“Your mother pressured the sheriff’s department.”
Brooks showed him a list of political donations.
The sheriff retired six months later with a property purchased through a company linked to Victoria.
Khloe listened from her hospital bed.
She looked weak, but her mind remained sharp.
“Daniel did not mention Edward by accident.”
“He wants us focused on Victoria while he escapes.”
Marcus nodded.
“Then we find both of them.”
Adrian entered with an update on the baby.
Her lungs were responding to treatment.
They could touch her through the incubator that afternoon.
Khloe’s eyes filled with tears.
For the first time since the attack, hope entered the room.
Marcus helped move her wheelchair toward the neonatal unit.
Their daughter’s tiny hand closed around Khloe’s finger.
Khloe whispered the name she had chosen months earlier.
“Grace.”
Marcus repeated it.
“Grace Thorne.”
The child’s heart monitor continued its steady rhythm.
For several minutes, the conspiracy disappeared.
There was only a mother, a father, and a daughter fighting to remain together.
Then Khloe noticed something attached beneath the incubator shelf.
A white envelope.
No hospital markings.
No patient label.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Edward Thorne standing beside a lakeside cabin.
The date was printed on the corner.
It had been taken three days after his supposed death.
On the back was a handwritten message.
HE DID NOT DROWN.
Victoria entered the neonatal unit behind them.
Her face became pale when she saw the photograph.
Marcus turned.
“You knew he survived.”
Victoria said nothing.
“Where is my father?”
She looked toward Grace.
May you like
Then she lowered her voice.
“Alive.”
