Chapter 14 - The Child Who Could Freeze a Company.
Cameron Vale arrived at David Sloan's office carrying a gray document case and the expression of a man who had not slept properly in weeks.
He was thirty-two, dark-haired, lean, and dressed in the kind of inexpensive navy suit that had been tailored carefully enough to look expensive.
Lauren noticed his hands first.
They trembled when he put the case on the conference table.
"I don't want money."
David nodded.
"No one offered you any."
"I need that clear."
"It is."
Cameron looked at Nathan.
"I also don't want your company."
Nathan almost smiled.
"Good."
Cameron did not.
"I want Richard Grant away from my employees."
That Nathan understood.
Lauren sat beside him while Cameron opened the case.
The first folder contained photographs.
Ashley and Cameron at a beach house six months earlier.
Ashley and Cameron at a restaurant.
Ashley asleep against his shoulder on a train.
Nothing about the images was sensational.
That made them more convincing.
They looked like a real relationship.
The second folder contained travel receipts and hotel confirmations.
The dates covered the period when Ashley became pregnant.
The third contained the paternity report.
David examined the laboratory seals and chain-of-custody documents.
"We will authenticate this independently."
Cameron nodded.
"Please do."
Then he unlocked his phone.
"The messages matter more."
He exported a conversation with Ashley that spanned seven months.
The early messages were affectionate.
By late spring, they had become strained.
Cameron wanted Ashley to tell her family about him.
Ashley kept delaying.
Then came the pregnancy.
Cameron had responded with shock, fear, and eventually cautious excitement.
Ashley had responded differently.
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.
Cameron had written back:
FOR US?
Ashley replied:
FOR THE TRUST.
Lauren looked at Nathan.
Cameron scrolled.
More messages followed.
Cameron asked what trust she meant.
Ashley refused to explain.
Two weeks later, she wrote:
IF THE TIMING IS RIGHT, EVELYN WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO FIX NATHAN'S MARRIAGE PROBLEM.
Lauren felt anger rise through her chest.
"Marriage problem."
Cameron looked embarrassed.
"I didn't understand what she meant at the time."
"And later?"
"Later I did."
He opened another thread.
Ashley had written:
LAUREN'S CHILD CANNOT BE THE FIRST UNCHALLENGED MITCHELL HEIR.
Nathan leaned forward.
"Unchallenged?"
David's expression sharpened.
Cameron continued.
"This is the part I think you need your trust lawyer to explain."
He showed them a photograph Ashley had sent him.
It was a page from Thomas Mitchell's trust summary.
Someone had highlighted the phrase FIRST LEGALLY RECOGNIZED CHILD.
David took the phone.
"Where did she get this?"
Cameron shook his head.
"She said Evelyn."
Nathan looked furious.
"My mother gave her trust documents."
Cameron scrolled further.
Ashley had written:
IF THERE IS A PATERNITY DISPUTE WHEN MY BABY ARRIVES, THEY CAN'T TRANSFER CONTROL TO LAUREN.
Lauren read the line twice.
David leaned back slowly.
"There it is."
Nathan looked at him.
"Explain."
"If Ashley filed a credible paternity claim before Lauren gives birth, she could seek an order preserving the status quo until parentage is resolved."
Lauren's hand moved instinctively to her belly.
"Freezing the trust."
"Potentially."
"Even with a fake claim?"
"Courts don't know a claim is fake before evidence is tested."
David pointed toward Cameron's paternity report.
"But this destroys the credibility of that strategy."
Cameron looked at Lauren.
"Ashley told me she wasn't trying to take Nathan from you permanently."
Lauren raised an eyebrow.
"How generous."
"She said once the proxy was signed, the paternity issue could disappear quietly."
Nathan stared at him.
"So my reputation was leverage."
"Yes."
"My marriage was leverage."
"Yes."
Lauren looked at Cameron.
"And your child was leverage."
Cameron's face changed.
"Yes."
That was the answer that hurt him.
Lauren understood.
She reached across the table and pushed the box of tissues toward him without comment.
Cameron did not take one.
He continued through the messages.
One exchange had occurred the night before the foyer incident.
Cameron wrote:
DON'T DO ANYTHING TO LAUREN.
Ashley answered:
I'M NOT TOUCHING HER BABY.
Cameron replied:
THAT IS NOT WHAT I SAID.
Ashley wrote:
I JUST NEED HER TO BREAK IN FRONT OF NATHAN.
Lauren's skin went cold.
The same language appeared in Maria's recording.
Independent corroboration.
Cameron opened the final message he wanted them to see.
It was sent two hours after the kick.
Ashley wrote:
SHE DIDN'T BREAK.
Then:
NATHAN SAW TOO MUCH.
Then:
DAD SAYS WE MOVE TO PATERNITY.
Nathan stood and walked toward the window.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Lauren looked at David.
"How soon could Ashley file?"
"She could have already filed something under seal."
Cameron's face tightened.
"She has."
Everyone looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Richard's attorney called me yesterday."
David sat forward.
"What did he say?"
"He offered me a settlement."
"For what?"
"To disclaim paternity and leave the country for six months."
Nathan turned from the window.
"How much?"
"Three million dollars."
Lauren stared at him.
"You said no?"
Cameron looked insulted.
"That's my child."
Lauren nodded.
"Good."
David's assistant knocked and entered carrying a sealed courier envelope.
"This just arrived for Mr. Mitchell."
David opened it.
Inside was a notice from the family trust's outside administrator.
An emergency petition had been filed requesting suspension of the succession transfer pending determination of a competing paternity claim.
Nathan read the first page.
"Filed by Ashley Grant."
David took the document.
"And supported by an affidavit from Evelyn Mitchell."
Lauren felt the room go silent.
Nathan stared at his mother's name beneath the notarized signature.
Cameron whispered the obvious.
"Your mother chose them."
