Chapter 9 - What Happened After the Photograph.

Lauren did not ask Nathan what happened after the camera stopped.
She asked who had taken the photograph.
The question surprised him.
"A hired photographer."
"For the engagement dinner?"
"For what they thought would become an engagement dinner."
Lauren handed the picture to Owen.
"Find the photographer."
Nathan looked at her.
"Lauren, I already told you what happened."
"I know."
"You believe me?"
She met his eyes.
"I believe you enough to verify it instead of letting Ashley tell me what to think."
Something in Nathan's face softened.
Owen photographed both sides of the image and began searching the metadata visible in the printed border.
A small studio code appeared in the corner.
Twenty minutes later, he had a name.
Caroline Mercer.
She had retired from event photography three years earlier and now taught visual arts at a community college outside Charleston.
Owen called her.
Caroline remembered the Grant dinner immediately.
"Hard to forget that one."
Owen put her on speaker after receiving permission.
"Why?"
Caroline laughed quietly.
"Because everyone looked like they were attending a wedding except the man who was supposedly getting engaged."
Nathan looked at Lauren.
Caroline continued.
"I was hired to document the weekend."
"Do you still have the photographs?"
"Possibly."
"We need to know what happened immediately after one specific image."
Owen described it.
There was a pause.
"I remember that terrace."
Lauren's hands tightened together.
"Did you see what happened?"
Caroline's tone became more careful.
"I took a burst of photographs because I thought the couple was posing."
Nathan stared at the table.
"They weren't," Caroline added.
"Can you find the images?" Owen asked.
"Give me a minute."
They listened to keyboard clicks through the phone.
Lauren watched Nathan.
He did not look afraid of what Caroline would find.
He looked embarrassed.
That mattered.
"Found them."
Caroline's voice returned.
"There are twelve frames."
"Can you send them?"
"If Mr. Mitchell agrees."
Nathan answered immediately.
"I agree."
The files arrived three minutes later.
Owen projected them onto the wall.
Frame one showed Ashley stepping close to Nathan.
Frame two showed her hand rising toward his neck.
Frame three was the photograph in the envelope.
Their faces met.
From that angle, it looked like a romantic kiss.
Frame four changed everything.
Nathan's hands were on Ashley's shoulders.
He was pushing her back.
Frame five showed Ashley reaching for him again.
Frame six showed Nathan stepping away.
Frame seven showed Ashley crying.
Frame eight showed Evelyn entering the terrace.
Frame nine showed Nathan pointing toward the house.
Frame ten showed Evelyn gripping his arm.
Frame eleven showed Nathan pulling free.
Frame twelve showed him walking away alone.
Lauren let out a breath she had not realized she was holding.
Nathan looked at her.
"That's what happened."
"I know."
He closed his eyes briefly.
Lauren touched his hand.
"I'm still angry you didn't tell me everything."
"You should be."
"But I'm not going to punish you for being kissed by someone you rejected."
Nathan looked down at their joined hands.
"Thank you."
Owen cleared his throat gently.
"There's something else about the photograph in the envelope."
Lauren looked at him.
"What?"
"It wasn't printed eight years ago."
"How do you know?"
"The paper stock was manufactured last year."
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
"So someone printed it recently."
"Very recently, probably."
Lauren glanced toward the security cameras outside the safe house.
"Which means Ashley or whoever sent it has access to the old archive."
Owen nodded.
"And wanted you to see only one frame."
Nathan's phone buzzed.
A message from Ashley.
He almost ignored it.
Lauren stopped him.
"Open it."
The message was short.
WE CAN END THIS TODAY.
A second message appeared.
COME TO THE ESTATE AT FOUR.
NO LAWYERS.
Lauren laughed softly.
"She really likes telling people where to go."
Nathan typed one response.
NO.
Ashley answered before he could put the phone down.
THEN LAUREN WILL KEEP BLEEDING IN PUBLIC.
Nathan's face went cold.
Lauren read the sentence twice.
"That's a threat."
Owen took screenshots.
Nathan started typing.
Lauren touched his wrist.
"Wait."
He looked at her.
"Tell her we'll come."
"Absolutely not."
"Not alone."
"She said no lawyers."
"Ashley has also said she slipped, I pushed her, the camera lied, and she doesn't know Maria."
Owen almost smiled.
Lauren continued.
"We don't have to follow her rules."
Nathan looked unconvinced.
"What do you want to do?"
"Hear the offer."
"Why?"
"Because people reveal what they want when they think they're winning."
Owen leaned back in his chair.
"She's right."
Nathan gave him a look.
Owen raised both hands.
"With security, counsel nearby, and a controlled recording plan."
Lauren looked at Nathan.
"No more letting them write the story first."
At three thirty, they left for the estate.
Lauren wore a dark green coat over a simple maternity dress and comfortable flats.
Nathan wore no tie.
Owen followed in another car.
Rachel Kim and Nathan's attorney, David Sloan, waited at a nearby office in case Maria's evidence became relevant.
When the estate gates opened, Lauren felt the same pressure in her chest that she had felt the night before.
The chandelier was visible through the front windows.
The foyer looked unchanged.
That bothered her.
Places where terrible moments happened should look different afterward.
They rarely did.
Ashley waited in the library with Evelyn and Richard Grant.
Richard was a broad-shouldered man in his late sixties with silver hair and the calm expression of someone accustomed to controlling rooms through money rather than volume.
He stood when Lauren entered.
"Mrs. Mitchell."
Lauren did not take his offered hand.
"Mr. Grant."
Ashley sat near the fireplace in a pale blue maternity dress.
She looked delicate again.
Lauren no longer found the costume convincing.
Evelyn remained behind the desk.
Nathan looked at his mother.
"You watched Ashley kick Lauren."
Richard sighed.
"We're not here to relitigate an unfortunate moment."
Lauren turned toward him.
"It happened yesterday."
"Exactly."
Richard gestured toward the chairs.
"Which is why we should resolve this before it damages everyone further."
Nathan did not sit.
"What's the offer?"
Richard smiled faintly.
"Efficient."
He opened a leather folder.
Inside lay the proxy agreement from the photograph.
Beside it was a prepared public statement.
Lauren picked up the statement.
The first line made her jaw tighten.
LAST NIGHT, EMOTIONS RAN HIGH DURING A PRIVATE FAMILY DISAGREEMENT.
She kept reading.
Lauren was expected to state that she had misinterpreted Ashley's movement as intentional.
Ashley would state that she had overreacted afterward.
Both women would ask for privacy.
Nathan would sign a twelve-month voting proxy granting Evelyn authority over his shares.
In return, the Grant communications team would "assist in correcting online misinformation."
Lauren looked at Richard.
"You created the misinformation."
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Be careful with accusations."
Lauren folded the statement once.
"Be careful with edited videos."
Ashley spoke from the fireplace.
"I didn't post it."
Lauren turned.
"Then who did?"
Ashley lowered her eyes.
"I don't know."
Nathan looked at the proxy.
"And if I don't sign?"
Richard closed the folder.
"Then everyone lives with the consequences."
"What consequences?"
Richard looked toward Lauren.
"Public curiosity can become cruel."
Nathan stepped closer.
"Are you threatening my wife?"
"I'm describing reality."
Lauren's phone, hidden inside her coat pocket, continued recording.
She hoped every word was clear.
Then Ashley said something none of them expected.
"Tell him the rest, Dad."
Richard looked at her sharply.
Ashley stood.
"Tell Nathan why the public story can get worse."
Evelyn rose from behind the desk.
"Ashley, don't."
Ashley smiled.
"Why not?"
She looked directly at Lauren.
"She wanted every secret."
Nathan's face hardened.
"What are you talking about?"
Ashley placed one hand over her pregnant belly.
Then she said the sentence that changed the room.
"Ask Nathan why my baby has his name on the medical file."
May you like
