Chapter 19 - Back Beneath the Chandelier.

Nathan refused to let Lauren return to the mansion alone.

Lauren had not intended to.

Owen arranged two security vehicles and notified David before they left the tower.

Evelyn asked to come.

Nathan said no.

For once, she did not argue.

Richard had disappeared into a separate elevator with his attorneys.

No one knew whether Ashley had contacted him.

The drive to the estate felt strangely familiar.

Lauren watched trees pass the window and remembered leaving the same property after the kick, frightened and confused while the security archive disappeared from Nathan's phone.

This time, there were copies everywhere.

Lawyers had copies.

Trustees had copies.

Forensic specialists had copies.

Maria had copies of her recordings.

Caleb had signed declarations.

Truth was no longer trapped inside one tablet on one wall.

That mattered.

The estate gates stood open.

No guard appeared at the booth.

Owen frowned.

"Stay in the car."

He sent one security officer ahead.

The officer returned two minutes later.

"House is clear except for Miss Grant."

"Where?"

"Foyer."

Lauren looked at Nathan.

"Of course."

They entered together.

The chandelier blazed above the polished floor exactly as it had two nights earlier.

Ashley stood at the bottom of the sweeping staircase.

She had removed her coat.

The black maternity dress made her look almost colorless beneath the crystal light.

The wall-mounted tablet glowed behind her.

Lauren stopped near the doorway.

"You wanted to talk."

Ashley looked at Nathan.

"I wanted her."

Nathan answered.

"You don't get her alone."

Ashley gave a weak laugh.

"Still protecting her."

"Yes."

The simplicity of his answer seemed to wound Ashley.

She looked at Lauren.

"Do you know what that feels like?"

Lauren did not respond.

Ashley continued.

"To spend your whole life being told one thing is going to happen."

"You mean marrying Nathan."

"I mean everything."

Ashley stepped toward the center of the foyer.

Owen remained near the entrance, silent.

His body camera was recording.

Lauren knew it.

Ashley did not seem to care.

"My father told me Mitchell and Grant would become one family."

Her voice trembled.

"Aunt Evelyn told me Nathan needed time."

Nathan's expression hardened.

"I told you no."

Ashley looked at him.

"You told me no after everybody else spent years telling me yes."

"That was not my promise."

"I know that now."

Lauren watched Ashley's face.

For the first time, she saw the shape of the prison Ashley had mistaken for a throne.

It did not excuse anything.

It explained something.

Ashley turned back to Lauren.

"Then you appeared."

Lauren said nothing.

"You didn't care about the company."

"No."

"You didn't care about the Grant name."

"No."

"You didn't even understand what you were taking."

Lauren's anger rose.

"Nathan isn't something I took."

Ashley closed her eyes.

"I know."

The answer surprised everyone.

Ashley looked toward the tablet.

"I knew before Charleston was over."

Nathan frowned.

"Knew what?"

"That you would never love me because someone arranged it."

Nathan's expression softened only slightly.

"Then why keep this going?"

Ashley laughed through tears.

"Because admitting that meant admitting my father had built my whole future around something fake."

Lauren looked at her.

"So you built another fake future around my husband."

Ashley flinched.

"Yes."

The foyer became very quiet.

Lauren had not expected the admission.

Neither had Nathan.

Ashley continued.

"When Cameron and I got together, I thought I was finally done with all of it."

"Then you got pregnant," Lauren said.

Ashley nodded.

"And Dad found out."

Her voice became smaller.

"He said I had ruined everything."

"Your child didn't ruin anything," Lauren said.

Ashley looked at her sharply.

Lauren held her gaze.

"Your father used the pregnancy."

Ashley nodded.

"He said the timing could still save the Grant agreement."

Nathan stepped forward.

"By claiming I was the father."

"At first, no."

Ashley shook her head.

"At first the plan was just to make Lauren leave."

Lauren felt her pulse quicken.

"How?"

Ashley looked toward the staircase.

"Make you believe Nathan had hidden more about Charleston."

"The blanket."

"Yes."

"The photograph."

"Yes."

"The comments about his past."

"Yes."

Lauren's voice hardened.

"And the kick?"

Ashley closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she did not answer.

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"Answer her."

Ashley opened her eyes.

"I wanted Lauren to yell at me."

Lauren stared at her.

"So you kicked me."

"You wouldn't react."

The words were quiet.

They were somehow worse than an elaborate excuse.

Ashley continued.

"I insulted you."

"I remember."

"You kept trying to leave."

"I remember that too."

"I thought if I scared you, you would push me or slap me or do something Nathan couldn't ignore."

Lauren's hands became cold.

"You were willing to risk my pregnancy to create a scene."

Ashley shook her head quickly.

"I didn't think you would fall."

"You don't get to control what happens after you kick someone."

Ashley looked down.

"I know."

Lauren's voice became harder.

"Do you?"

Ashley began crying.

Not the polished tears from the hallway.

These were ugly and uneven.

Lauren felt no satisfaction.

"Then Nathan came in," Ashley said.

"And you lied," Nathan replied.

"I panicked."

"You performed."

Ashley looked at him.

"Both can be true."

Nathan did not answer.

Ashley continued.

"When the tablet showed the video, I knew it was over."

Lauren looked at the wall-mounted screen.

"So you deleted it."

Ashley nodded.

"Aunt Evelyn gave me her tablet."

"She told you to delete it?"

"No."

Ashley wiped her face.

"She told Caleb to handle it."

"And when he stalled?"

"I did it myself."

Nathan exhaled slowly.

"The viral edit?"

Ashley hesitated.

"Dad's communications consultant made it."

"Who uploaded it?"

"I sent it to him."

There it was.

A complete admission.

Owen remained still by the door.

His camera continued recording.

Lauren asked the next question.

"The paternity report?"

Ashley looked ashamed.

"Dad gave it to me."

"You knew it was fake."

Ashley did not answer.

Lauren stepped closer.

"You knew."

"Yes."

Nathan closed his eyes.

Ashley spoke faster now, as if confession had opened a door she could no longer close.

"The real test excluded you."

"And Cameron's test?"

"Real."

"You knew Cameron was the father."

"Yes."

"Then why file the petition?"

Ashley looked at Lauren's belly.

"To freeze the trust."

"For your father."

"For the company."

Lauren shook her head.

"Don't do what Evelyn did."

Ashley blinked.

"What?"

"Don't hide your choices behind thousands of employees who never asked you to lie for them."

Ashley stared at her.

Then slowly nodded.

"For my father."

The admission settled into the foyer.

A door opened behind the east corridor.

Everyone turned.

Richard Grant stepped into the room.

Owen's hand moved toward his radio.

Richard raised both hands.

"I'm unarmed."

Nathan stepped between him and Lauren.

Richard looked at Ashley.

"Stop talking."

Ashley laughed bitterly.

"You're late."

"Come with me."

"No."

Richard's face hardened.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Ashley looked around the foyer.

"That's what you always say when I do something you didn't choose."

Richard glanced at the tablet.

Then at Owen.

His eyes narrowed.

"Are you recording?"

Owen answered.

"Yes."

Richard looked at Ashley.

"Not another word."

Ashley smiled through tears.

"You told me the paternity lie was temporary."

Richard's expression became stone.

"Ashley."

"You told me Cameron would take the money."

"Stop."

"You told me Lauren was weak."

"Enough."

"You told me Nathan would choose the company."

Richard moved toward her.

Nathan stepped in front of him.

"Stay where you are."

Richard stopped.

Ashley was shaking now.

"You told me if I failed, you would cut me off and make sure Cameron never saw the baby."

Richard's face changed.

Lauren saw fear there for the first time.

Not fear of Nathan.

Fear of the record.

He looked at Owen.

"That recording is privileged family communication."

David's voice came through Owen's phone speaker.

He had been listening remotely with consent from the people under his representation.

"No, Richard."

Richard's face went white.

David continued.

"And before you start threatening everyone in the room, I recommend you remember that multiple investigations are already preserving evidence independently."

Richard looked toward the tablet again.

Then he moved.

Not toward Lauren.

Toward the wall.

He grabbed the smart-home tablet and pulled.

The mount cracked.

The screen struck the floor and shattered across one corner.

Lauren recoiled.

Owen's security officer stepped forward immediately.

Richard stared at the broken screen.

Nathan almost laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Richard turned.

Nathan held up his phone.

"It uploads to the cloud now."

Owen lifted his body camera.

"So does this."

Ashley sank onto the bottom stair.

The chandelier reflected in the fractured tablet glass.

Lauren looked at it and felt something inside her finally loosen.

Two nights earlier, one screen had seemed like the only thing standing between truth and a lie.

Now the truth existed in too many places to destroy with one angry hand.

Richard looked around the foyer and realized it too.

For once, no one needed to say anything.
