Chapter 8 - The Lie That Went Public.

By the time Lauren reached the lobby, the video had passed one hundred thousand views.
Comments multiplied faster than she could read them.
Some accused her of jealousy.
Some called Ashley brave.
Some speculated that Nathan had cheated with Ashley.
Others analyzed Lauren's face frame by frame as if fifteen edited seconds had given strangers the right to define her entire life.
Nathan took the phone from her hand.
"Stop reading."
Lauren looked at him.
"They think I attacked her."
"They don't know anything."
"They think they do."
Owen arrived two minutes later with his laptop open.
"The account that posted it was created this morning."
Nathan looked at him.
"Can you trace it?"
"Maybe."
"Take it down."
"We can report it, but copies are already spreading."
Lauren leaned against the lobby wall.
For the first time since the confrontation, humiliation threatened to overwhelm her anger.
The private cruelty beneath the chandelier had become entertainment.
Her body.
Her pregnancy.
Her fear.
Everything had been compressed into a clip designed to make her look unstable.
Nathan stood in front of her.
"Look at me."
She did.
"We have the full video."
"Then release it."
Owen raised a hand.
"Not yet."
Lauren turned sharply.
"Why not?"
"Because whoever posted this wants you reacting in public."
"They are lying about me."
"I know."
"Then why should I stay quiet?"
Owen lowered his voice.
"Because we have more than a reputation problem now."
He showed them the post metadata.
The clip had been exported from the Mitchell estate system at 7:14 that morning.
"Someone with access to the original archive created this edit."
Nathan frowned.
"The archive was deleted last night."
"The foyer copy was."
Owen tapped the screen.
"This clip came from a local cache."
Lauren looked at him.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning the person who deleted the main file kept a copy."
Nathan's phone rang.
Evelyn.
He answered immediately.
"Did you post it?"
Evelyn sounded furious.
"Of course not."
"Did Ashley?"
"She is sitting in front of me crying."
Lauren almost laughed.
Nathan did not.
"That isn't an answer."
"She says she did not post anything."
"And you believe her?"
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"Nathan, the board has seen the video."
"I don't care about the board."
"You should."
"My wife was assaulted."
"And now the public thinks the opposite."
"Because someone edited the footage."
Evelyn paused.
"Then perhaps releasing another video would only deepen the spectacle."
Lauren stepped closer to the phone.
"That's convenient."
Evelyn heard her.
"Lauren, I am trying to contain this."
"You watched it happen."
Silence.
Nathan looked at Lauren.
Evelyn's voice changed.
"What did you say?"
"Camera Fourteen saw you on the balcony."
The line went dead.
Nathan stared at the phone.
Lauren felt a grim satisfaction.
Owen did not.
"Now she knows you have the backup."
"Good," Lauren said.
"Maybe."
Owen closed his laptop.
"But we should assume every remaining copy inside the estate is about to disappear."
Nathan looked toward the elevators.
"Then we preserve what we have."
Rachel Kim joined them with Maria beside her.
Maria looked at Lauren.
"I will give you the recordings."
Rachel corrected gently.
"You will give copies to counsel."
Maria nodded.
Lauren almost smiled.
"Listen to her."
Nathan arranged for his attorney to receive the security clip and Maria's audio files through encrypted transfer.
Within an hour, digital forensics specialists began authenticating them.
Lauren wanted to go home.
Owen advised against it.
"Your address is already in two comment threads."
Nathan's face darkened.
"How?"
"Someone posted a photo of your building."
Lauren closed her eyes.
"Ashley?"
Owen shook his head.
"No proof."
Nathan booked a private residence owned by his firm outside the city.
They left through the building's underground garage.
On the drive, Lauren kept her phone turned facedown.
Nathan's phone never stopped vibrating.
Board members.
Family.
Reporters.
Employees.
Finally, he turned his off too.
"I'm sorry."
Lauren looked out the window.
"For what part?"
He accepted the question.
"For not telling you enough."
"That part is yours."
"I know."
"The rest belongs to them."
Nathan reached for her hand.
She let him take it.
The safe house was a modest stone residence compared with the Mitchell estate, hidden behind old trees on a quiet private road.
Lauren had never been there before.
Nathan said his company used it for visiting executives.
Owen had already arranged security.
For several hours, nothing happened.
That made Lauren more nervous, not less.
At six that evening, the digital forensics report arrived.
The original Camera Fourteen clip was authentic.
Maria's recordings showed no signs of editing.
The viral clip, however, had been deliberately altered.
Frames had been removed.
Audio had been replaced.
The export account belonged to a user labeled EGUEST.
Nathan stared at the report.
"E for Evelyn?"
Owen shook his head.
"The guest profile was created three weeks ago."
"By who?"
Owen scrolled.
"Administrator account EMITCHELL."
Lauren looked at Nathan.
"Your mother."
"Or someone using her credentials."
Owen nodded.
"There's more."
He opened another page.
The guest account had logged in from three devices.
One was Evelyn's personal tablet.
One was the wall-mounted foyer tablet.
The third was a phone.
Owen displayed the device identifier.
Nathan's expression changed immediately.
Lauren noticed.
"You recognize it."
He nodded.
"I bought that phone."
"For who?"
Nathan looked at her.
"Ashley."
Lauren's pulse quickened.
"When?"
"Five years ago."
She stared at him.
Nathan raised a hand before she could speak.
"It was a company phone."
"Why did she have a company phone?"
"She worked on a Mitchell-Grant project for six months."
Owen looked at the identifier again.
"Is she still supposed to have it?"
"No."
"Then either the device was never returned or someone copied its ID."
Lauren leaned back.
"Can you prove which?"
Owen started to answer.
A security alarm sounded from the front of the house.
Nathan stood instantly.
Owen checked the camera feed on his phone.
A courier stood at the gate holding a white envelope.
"No delivery was scheduled."
Nathan moved toward the door.
Owen stopped him.
"Security will take it."
Five minutes later, a guard brought the envelope inside after examining it.
There was no return address.
Only Lauren's name.
Nathan opened it with gloves.
Inside was a single photograph.
Lauren looked at it and felt the room tilt.
The image showed Nathan and Ashley in Charleston eight years earlier.
Ashley was kissing him.
The angle made it look mutual.
On the back, someone had written one sentence.
ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE CAMERA STOPPED.
