Chapter 15 - The Boardroom Trap.

By morning, Elena had slept for forty-seven minutes.
She knew because her phone tracked it.
She had returned to her own apartment with Sofia and two independent security officers.
Adrian had not called.
Not once.
She told herself that was what she wanted.
At 6:30 A.M., a package arrived by courier.
Inside was the wedding ring.
No note.
No apology.
Only the ring in a plain black box.
Elena stared at it for a long time.
Then she closed the box and put it in a drawer.
At seven, Sofia arrived with coffee and worse news.
"The E.M. credential downloaded the ledger copy."
"From where?"
"A terminal registered to Marlowe headquarters."
"Richard."
"Likely."
"Why use my initials?"
"To make it look like you stole evidence."
Elena took the coffee.
"He wants every crime to end with my signature."
"Or your name."
Elena looked toward the city.
"Then let's give him my name where he can't control it."
At nine, Marlowe Systems called an emergency board meeting.
Victor requested the meeting.
His proposed agenda contained one item.
TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF ELENA MARLOWE'S VOTING RIGHTS DUE TO INCAPACITY AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
Elena laughed when she read it.
"He's trying to declare me incompetent because I married Adrian."
Sofia shook her head.
"Because the toxicology report proves you were drugged."
"He caused the problem and now wants to use it as evidence against me."
"Classic Victor."
Elena dressed in a navy suit that had belonged to her mother.
She found it in the back of her closet inside a garment bag she had never opened.
Madeline had worn it to Elena's high school graduation.
The sleeves were slightly too long.
Elena left them that way.
At 10:55 A.M., she entered the Marlowe boardroom alone.
Victor sat at the head of the table.
Richard Bell sat to his right.
Eleven directors filled the remaining seats.
No Adrian.
No Sofia.
That had been Elena's choice.
Victor rose.
"I'm glad you came."
"I own thirty-one percent of the voting rights under review."
Elena took her seat.
"Of course I came."
Richard folded his hands.
"Technically, those rights remain in trust until your birthday."
"Technically, the marriage clause triggered independent review and suspended all pending proxies."
Richard smiled.
"You've been studying."
"I had a busy night."
Victor looked tired.
For the first time, Elena saw age in his face.
"This doesn't need to become ugly."
"You hired my fiancé to manipulate me."
"Allegedly."
"You routed company money through Northstar."
"Allegedly."
"You tried to use a forged guarantee to seize my shares."
"Allegedly."
Elena looked at Richard.
"He taught you that word?"
Richard's smile faded.
Victor opened the meeting.
He presented a motion to suspend Elena's rights.
Richard displayed the edited penthouse video.
Several directors looked disturbed.
Then Richard presented the E.M. credential log showing Elena had supposedly downloaded the stolen ledger.
"Ms. Marlowe appears to be coordinating with Adrian Vale to remove confidential company records," he said.
Elena waited until he finished.
"May I ask one question?"
Victor sighed.
"Of course."
Elena looked at the board.
"Who created my E.M. credential?"
Richard answered.
"Information security."
"When?"
"Last night."
"At whose request?"
Richard paused.
"Yours."
"Show the request."
Richard clicked to another screen.
An email appeared from Elena's account.
PLEASE CREATE EMERGENCY LEDGER ACCESS FOR E.M.
Elena smiled.
"Read the timestamp."
Richard looked at it.
2:06 A.M.
"And where was I at 2:06 A.M.?"
No one answered.
Elena placed a certified marriage record on the table.
"At 2:06, I was in Adrian Vale's penthouse with a doctor, an attorney, a civil officiant, and three cameras documenting my capacity before a 2:17 marriage."
She looked at Richard.
"My phone was sealed in an evidence bag at 1:58 because I had asked for a toxicology record."
One director leaned forward.
Richard's face tightened.
Elena continued.
"The email did not come from my device."
She placed a forensic report beside the marriage record.
"It came from an internal Marlowe terminal assigned to legal counsel."
Every eye turned toward Richard.
Victor stared at him.
"Richard?"
For the first time, fear crossed the lawyer's face.
Small.
Fast.
Real.
Elena pressed a remote.
The screen changed.
Preston appeared by secure video from the apartment.
Victor stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.
"You have got to be kidding me."
Preston looked exhausted.
"I gave a sworn statement this morning."
Richard's voice sharpened.
"Anything Mr. Hale says is compromised."
Preston looked directly into the camera.
"Richard Bell forged Elena's signature."
The boardroom went silent.
"He provided the black-ink sample."
"He instructed me to put the sedative in Elena's champagne."
Elena saw several directors recoil.
Preston continued.
"Victor approved the plan."
Victor slammed his palm on the table.
"That's a lie."
Preston's eyes hardened.
"You told me it was the only way to keep the Chair from destroying all of us."
Victor went still.
Elena watched him.
"There is no Chair."
Victor looked at her.
"What?"
Richard stood.
"This meeting is over."
"Sit down," Elena said.
Richard stared at her.
She pressed the remote again.
Her mother's tape recording filled the room.
There is no Chair.
There never was.
Victor's face lost all color.
He turned slowly toward Richard.
"You told me Madeline was alive."
Richard said nothing.
"You let me speak to her."
Still nothing.
Victor's voice broke.
"For twelve years."
Richard reached for his briefcase.
Two federal investigators entered the boardroom.
Elena had contacted them through the outside attorney at dawn.
Richard stopped.
One investigator approached.
"Mr. Bell, we'd like to speak with you about Northstar Heritage Partners."
Richard looked around the room.
Then he smiled.
It was the calmest expression Elena had ever seen on him.
"Of course."
He handed over his phone.
"I have nothing to hide."
As the investigators escorted him out, Elena's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Sofia was sitting in the back seat of a car.
Beside her was Marcus.
May you like
The message contained six words.
YOU ARRESTED THE WRONG MAN, ELENA.
