Chapter 4 - The Key She Didn't Know She Had.

Elena stared at the message until Adrian took the evidence bag from the officer.
"What key?"
No one answered.
Elena looked at Adrian.
"Don't tell me you know."
"I don't."
For once, she believed him immediately.
His surprise was too small to be performed and too real to miss.
She turned back toward the bed.
Her purse sat on a bench near the wall.
She had not noticed it when she woke.
Elena crossed the room and emptied it onto the comforter.
Wallet.
Lipstick.
Phone charger.
A folded gala program.
Three receipts.
No key.
She checked the inner pocket.
Nothing.
"Maybe it's not literal," Adrian said.
"People don't kidnap someone and leave crossword clues unless they want something literal."
"Fair point."
Elena opened her wallet.
Behind her driver's license was a tiny brass key.
She stopped.
"What?" Adrian asked.
She pulled it out.
The key was small enough for a jewelry box.
A strip of white tape wrapped around the top.
On it was written 318.
Elena's hands started shaking.
"I've never seen this before."
Adrian did not reach for it.
"Check your wallet for anything else."
Behind a credit card was a claim ticket from Grand Central Station.
Locker 318.
The time printed on the ticket was 12:52 A.M.
Elena stared at it.
"I was with you at twelve fifty-two."
"You were."
"Did we go to Grand Central?"
"No."
Adrian took out his phone.
"My driver picked us up from the gala at twelve twenty-nine."
"Then how did this get in my wallet?"
"Someone put it there before you left."
A memory flickered.
The service corridor.
Preston gripping her arm.
A waiter passing behind them.
A woman's hand touching Elena's purse when she turned.
She could not see the face.
"There was someone else."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Elena pressed her fingertips to her forehead.
"A woman maybe."
"At the gala?"
"Near the service exit."
Adrian spoke to the officer.
"Get every camera angle from the corridor."
The officer nodded and left.
Elena held up the key.
"We're going to Grand Central."
"My team can go."
"No."
"Elena."
"If someone wanted your team to open it, they would have sent the key to you."
"And if someone wanted you exposed, they would send it to you."
"Then come with me."
Adrian studied her for a moment.
"You realize we were married less than nine hours ago and you're already giving me assignments."
"Temporary husband."
"Right."
"Very temporary."
The corner of his mouth moved.
It was almost a smile.
Elena hated that she noticed.
Thirty minutes later, they entered Grand Central through a private lower entrance.
Adrian wore a charcoal overcoat.
Elena wore jeans, a black sweater, and flat shoes Mrs. Alvarez had found in a guest closet.
Two security officers followed at a distance.
Elena felt conspicuous despite the crowds.
Every stranger looked like someone who might be watching.
Every phone lifted in their direction made her pulse jump.
Locker 318 was in a bank of old storage lockers near a service corridor used for temporary luggage holding.
The brass key fit.
Elena hesitated.
"If this explodes, I'm blaming you."
"That seems unfair."
"Marriage is about sharing responsibility."
Adrian gave her a look.
"You've adjusted quickly."
She opened the door.
Inside was a small black case.
Nothing else.
Adrian's security officer scanned it before Elena touched it.
No wires.
No unusual signal.
Elena lifted the case out and placed it on a metal bench.
Inside were three objects.
A flash drive.
An old silver watch.
And a handwritten note.
Elena recognized the handwriting before she unfolded it.
Her knees almost gave way.
Her father's letters were tall and narrow, with the same sharp M he had taught her to write as a child.
Lena,
If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.
Do not trust Victor.
Do not trust the company lawyer.
Do not trust anyone who tells you Northstar was created for your protection.
There is a second ledger.
The watch will open it.
Most important, if Adrian Vale is with you, listen before you judge him.
He owes me nothing.
I asked anyway.
Elena lowered the paper.
Adrian looked as stunned as she felt.
"You never saw this?"
"No."
"He mentioned you by name."
"He said he had left something for you, but I never found it."
Elena picked up the silver watch.
It had belonged to her father.
She remembered him wearing it every day.
After his death, Victor told her it had been lost in the crash.
She turned it over.
A tiny seam ran along the back.
Adrian took a pocketknife from his security officer and carefully pressed the edge.
The back popped open.
Inside, instead of a battery compartment, was a narrow strip of metal etched with numbers.
A key.
Not for a door.
A cryptographic key.
Adrian looked at the flash drive.
"We should not plug that into any normal computer."
"Agreed."
A shout erupted near the corridor entrance.
One of Adrian's officers turned.
A man in a baseball cap pushed through the crowd and ran directly toward them.
He was not holding a weapon.
He was holding a phone.
"Elena!"
Security intercepted him.
The man raised both hands.
"I'm a reporter."
Elena's stomach sank.
Behind him, more phones appeared.
Someone had tipped the press.
The reporter shouted over security.
"Mrs. Vale, is it true you married Adrian after transferring Marlowe assets to him?"
"What?"
"Did you marry him to avoid federal charges?"
Elena looked at Adrian.
His face had gone completely still.
The reporter continued.
"Preston Hale says you and Adrian threatened him after he discovered the two of you were laundering company money through Northstar."
Elena felt rage replace fear.
"Preston said that?"
"He released a statement ten minutes ago."
The reporter held up his phone.
On the screen was a photograph of Preston standing beside Victor Marlowe.
No bruise.
No kidnappers.
No fear.
Preston looked perfectly safe.
May you like
And Victor had one arm around his shoulders.
The kidnapping photo had been staged.
