Chapter 5 - The Lie That Went Public.

By the time Elena and Adrian returned to the penthouse, her name was trending nationwide.

The headlines multiplied faster than she could read them.

HEIRESS MARRIES ALLEGED CRIME BOSS HOURS AFTER CHARITY GALA MELTDOWN.

MYSTERY MARRIAGE RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT MARLOWE SYSTEMS FUNDS.

PRESTON HALE CLAIMS FORMER FIANCÉE THREATENED HIM.

One outlet used a photograph of Elena crying in the gala hallway.

The caption said she appeared intoxicated.

Another showed Adrian guiding her into his car.

The article described it as a possible abduction.

Elena threw her phone onto the sofa.

"He planned this."

Adrian stood near the window speaking quietly to his attorney.

When the call ended, Elena rounded on him.

"Preston planned every second."

"Yes."

"The fake kidnapping."

"Yes."

"The locker."

"Maybe."

She stopped.

"You think the locker was real."

"Your father's note was real."

"How do you know?"

"The paper is old."

"Paper can be aged."

"The watch was Samuel's."

"Victor had access to my father's things."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Good."

Elena stared at him.

"Good?"

"Keep questioning everything."

"Including you?"

"Especially me."

That answer annoyed her because it sounded exactly like something a trustworthy person would say.

It also sounded exactly like something a very skilled liar would say.

Adrian's attorney, the woman from the video, entered carrying a laptop.

"The toxicology screen is back."

Elena's stomach tightened.

"And?"

"A sedative was detected in your blood."

The attorney's expression hardened.

"The concentration is consistent with a dose taken between eleven thirty and midnight."

Elena sat down.

Preston had brought her champagne at eleven forty.

He had smiled when she said she was done drinking.

Just one toast, Elena.

For old times.

She remembered taking only a few sips.

"Can you prove he did it?"

"Not yet," the attorney said.

"There were hundreds of glasses at the gala."

Adrian folded his arms.

"We're getting footage from the bar."

Elena looked toward the black case from the locker.

It now sat inside a clear protective container on the dining table.

A cybersecurity specialist was working on the flash drive using an isolated computer.

"What about the second ledger?"

"Encrypted," Adrian said.

"The watch contains part of the key, but not all of it."

"What do we need?"

"A passphrase."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

The specialist looked up.

"The file header contains a hint."

"What is it?"

He turned the screen toward her.

ASK THE GIRL WHO HATED PEARS.

Elena stopped breathing.

Adrian looked at her.

"Does that mean something?"

"My father used to pack pears in my lunch."

"You hated them?"

"I hated them so much I traded them for cookies."

A memory surfaced.

Her father laughing in the kitchen.

You can hate the pear, kiddo, but don't hate the tree.

She whispered the sentence.

The specialist typed it exactly.

Access denied.

Elena closed her eyes.

"He used to say something else."

She pictured the old kitchen.

Her father slicing fruit.

Her refusing to eat.

His voice.

The fruit bruises where it is hit.

The tree remembers where it was cut.

She opened her eyes.

"Try 'the tree remembers.'"

The specialist typed.

The drive unlocked.

A directory appeared.

Hundreds of folders.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Scanned contracts.

Audio files.

And a folder labeled VICTOR.

Elena felt the room go cold.

The specialist opened it.

The first spreadsheet showed money leaving Marlowe Systems through consulting contracts and entering Northstar-linked accounts.

The transfers began eleven years ago.

Three years before her father's death.

"How much?" Elena asked.

The specialist scrolled.

"At least sixty-two million."

Elena gripped the back of a chair.

Adrian read over his shoulder.

"There are payment codes beside some transfers."

The specialist clicked a legend file.

One code meant legal.

One meant political.

One meant security.

And one was a single letter.

P.

Elena's stomach tightened.

"Preston?"

"Maybe," Adrian said.

The specialist opened the related folder.

The earliest P payment was eight years old.

Preston had been twenty-six then.

Still in graduate school.

More payments appeared over the next several years.

The amounts increased after Preston joined Marlowe Systems.

Then Elena saw a file dated six months before she met him.

It was a background report on her.

Favorite restaurants.

Friends.

Former boyfriends.

Running route.

Yoga studio.

Coffee order.

Everything.

Elena's skin crawled.

"He studied me."

No one spoke.

She opened another file herself.

A calendar entry appeared.

SUBJECT E.M. - INITIAL CONTACT APPROVED.

Approved by Victor Marlowe.

Elena sat down slowly.

Her entire relationship with Preston had been an assignment.

Three years of dinners.

Vacations.

Arguments.

A proposal on a rooftop.

Every memory changed shape at once.

"Why would he stay with me that long?"

Adrian's voice was careful.

"Access."

"To what?"

"Your trust."

The specialist opened a final document.

It was titled PHASE FOUR.

Elena read the first paragraph.

Upon marriage, Hale will obtain beneficiary access through the spousal authorization provision and execute final consolidation of voting rights.

Elena looked at the ring on her hand.

Preston had been planning to marry her for the shares.

Adrian's marriage had not only frozen the forged transfer.

It had destroyed Victor and Preston's three-year plan overnight.

A strange sound escaped Elena's throat.

Half laugh.

Half sob.

Then a new file notification appeared on the isolated computer.

The specialist frowned.

"That's impossible."

"What?" Adrian asked.

"This machine isn't connected to any network."

A single text file had appeared inside the open folder.

Its name was NEW_WIFE.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Don't open it."

The specialist unplugged the keyboard.

But the file opened by itself.

One sentence appeared on the screen.

CONGRATULATIONS, ELENA.

May you like

Then a second sentence typed itself beneath the first.

NOW ASK ADRIAN WHY HIS NAME IS IN THE LEDGER TOO.
