Chapter 6 - Adrian's Name in the Ledger.

Elena did not look at Adrian immediately.
She kept her eyes on the screen.
His name sat there in a folder beneath Victor's.
ADRIAN VALE.
The folder contained forty-three files.
The oldest was dated nine years ago.
The newest had been created three weeks earlier.
Elena finally turned.
"Tell me now."
Adrian's face had gone hard.
"I don't know what's in that folder."
"That's not what I asked."
"You asked why my name is in the ledger."
"Yes."
"I knew Samuel kept records."
"Did you know he kept records about you?"
"No."
The cybersecurity specialist looked between them.
"Should I open it?"
Elena answered before Adrian could.
"Yes."
The first file was a bank transfer.
Nine years earlier, Northstar had sent three hundred thousand dollars to Vale Maritime Services.
Elena felt a sharp burst of vindication.
Then she hated herself for feeling it.
"You took money from Northstar."
Adrian stepped toward the screen.
"That company wasn't mine."
"It has your name on it."
"Vale Maritime belonged to my father."
"And you inherited it."
"After it was already shut down."
The specialist opened another file.
A signed invoice appeared.
Samuel Marlowe had approved the payment.
The description read: SECURITY RECOVERY - PROJECT ARGUS.
Elena frowned.
"What's Project Argus?"
Adrian did not answer.
"You know."
"Yes."
"Then say it."
He walked to the opposite side of the room.
"Your father's tracking software had a hidden administrative layer."
"A back door?"
"Essentially."
"He built that?"
"No."
"Who did?"
"My father ordered one of his engineers to add it without Samuel's knowledge."
Elena felt her stomach turn.
"For what?"
"To locate shipments without leaving an audit trail."
"Illegal shipments."
"Yes."
Adrian's answer contained no excuse.
"When Samuel discovered Argus, he hired a security team to remove it."
Elena pointed at the screen.
"A team connected to your family."
"A team I controlled by then."
"So you were involved."
"I was nineteen."
"Old enough to know what your father was doing."
"Yes."
The quiet admission surprised her.
Adrian looked at her without trying to soften the truth.
"I knew enough to be ashamed of it."
Elena looked back at the screen.
The next file was an email from Samuel to Adrian.
You did the right thing shutting Argus down.
Your father will never forgive you.
Mine probably wouldn't have either.
That does not make it wrong.
Elena swallowed.
"My father trusted you."
"Sometimes."
"Enough to pay you three hundred thousand dollars."
"That money went to engineers and outside counsel."
"Convenient."
"Check the disbursements."
The specialist did.
Every dollar was accounted for.
Elena hated the relief she felt.
Then they reached the newest file.
Three weeks earlier.
A transfer of two million dollars from a Vale-owned investment company to an account controlled by Victor.
Elena stared at Adrian.
"Explain that."
For the first time all morning, Adrian looked genuinely surprised.
"I didn't authorize it."
"Your company did."
"Apparently."
"You expect me to believe someone can move two million dollars out of your company without you knowing?"
"No."
"Good."
"I expect to find out who did it."
Adrian pulled out his phone.
He called someone named Marcus.
"Freeze every outgoing transfer from Vale Capital."
He listened.
"No exceptions."
Another pause.
"And get me the authorization chain for a two-million-dollar payment three weeks ago to VJM Strategic Holdings."
Elena folded her arms.
"VJM. Victor James Marlowe."
"Yes."
Adrian ended the call.
"If someone inside my company helped Victor, I want the name."
Elena studied him.
"You really didn't know."
"No."
She almost believed him.
Then the isolated computer flashed again.
A new line appeared beneath the taunting message.
HE DIDN'T AUTHORIZE THE TWO MILLION.
Everyone froze.
The specialist disconnected the monitor power.
The screen went black.
Five seconds later, another monitor across the room lit up.
A message appeared.
HIS SISTER DID.
Adrian's face changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Elena caught it.
"You have a sister?"
He did not answer quickly enough.
"Adrian."
"Yes."
"What's her name?"
"Sofia."
"Why haven't I heard of her?"
"Because she doesn't live in New York."
"Where is she?"
Adrian's phone rang.
Marcus.
Adrian answered.
His expression darkened as he listened.
"Send it to me."
The call ended.
A document arrived on his phone.
He looked at it once.
Then handed the phone to Elena.
The transfer authorization carried Sofia Vale's digital signature.
Elena scrolled down.
The recipient note contained only five words.
FOR SAMUEL'S DAUGHTER.
Elena looked up.
"Why would your sister send Victor two million dollars for me?"
Elena watched him closely.
Until that moment, Adrian's composure had seemed almost unnatural.
Now she saw what lived underneath it.
Guilt.
Exhaustion.
And the particular fear of someone who had spent weeks imagining the worst without allowing himself to say it aloud.
"Why Switzerland?" Elena asked.
"She moved there after my father died."
"To get away from you?"
"From the family name."
Adrian looked toward the dark monitor.
"Sofia built a life where nobody cared who Dominic Vale had been."
"And three weeks ago she suddenly authorized money to Victor."
"Or someone wanted me to believe she did."
Elena thought about her own forged signature.
The pattern was no longer random.
Someone was not merely stealing identities.
Someone was turning relationships into evidence.
Her name against Preston.
Sofia's name against Adrian.
Victor's name against Elena.
Every forged record was designed to make the people closest to one another suspicious before they ever reached the truth.
That frightened Elena more than the money.
A thief wanted assets.
Whoever built this system wanted isolation.
May you like
Adrian's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Because Sofia disappeared three weeks ago."
