Chapter 16 - The Wrong Man.

Elena showed the photograph to the federal investigators before she showed Adrian.

That decision hurt him when he arrived ten minutes later.

She saw it in his face.

He did not complain.

He simply took the phone and enlarged the image.

Sofia sat upright in the back seat.

Her hands were not visible.

Marcus sat beside her.

A strip of silver duct tape covered one side of the rear window.

Outside, only a blurred brick wall could be seen.

"She's alive," Adrian said.

"For now."

Victor remained seated at the boardroom table.

He had not moved since hearing Madeline's tape.

He looked like a man who had aged ten years in twenty minutes.

One investigator turned toward him.

"Mr. Marlowe, if you know anything about Marcus Danner, now would be a good time."

Victor laughed weakly.

"I barely knew his name until last year."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"He ran my internal security for four years."

Victor looked at him.

"Then perhaps you should ask yourself why Richard knew that before I did."

Elena heard the distinction.

"Richard introduced Marcus to Victor?"

Victor nodded.

"He said Marcus could help with discreet risk management."

"And you never wondered why Adrian Vale's security director was offering you help?"

Victor looked at Elena.

"I wondered."

"But you used him anyway."

"Yes."

She wanted to hate him cleanly.

Victor would not let her.

He looked broken rather than powerful.

Guilty rather than innocent.

Both could be true.

The investigator's phone rang.

He listened for less than a minute.

Then he looked toward Elena.

"Bell's phone is clean."

"He wiped it."

"Possibly."

"His home office created the fake audio."

"The file was rendered there, yes."

"That's enough."

"Enough to question him."

The investigator chose his words carefully.

"Not enough to hold him on every accusation being made in this room."

Elena stared.

"Preston gave a sworn statement."

"Which Bell's attorney has already attacked as testimony from a participant seeking immunity."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"Where is Bell now?"

"Still with agents."

The investigator looked at the photograph on Elena's phone.

"But this message was sent after he entered custody."

Elena felt the implication.

"Scheduled message."

"Maybe."

"Or someone else is controlling the Chair."

Victor looked up suddenly.

"No."

Everyone turned toward him.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"Richard never sent the Chair messages directly."

Elena's pulse accelerated.

"How do you know?"

"Because he warned me not to trust him."

"Who?"

"The Chair."

A bitter laugh escaped Victor.

"She told me Richard was useful but ambitious."

Sofia had been right.

The system was designed so no participant fully trusted another.

Richard could accuse himself through the Chair and become more believable.

Adrian looked at Victor.

"How did you contact her?"

"Encrypted portal."

"Who installed it?"

Victor's eyes moved slowly toward him.

"Marcus."

The room went silent.

Elena felt the structure shift again.

Richard created documents.

Marcus controlled communications.

Victor followed orders from a person he never met.

"Could Marcus be the Chair?" Elena asked.

Victor shook his head.

"The voice existed before I met him."

"The identity could have existed first."

Adrian looked at the old Marlowe Systems floor plan on the wall.

"Marcus didn't build this alone."

Elena's phone vibrated again.

A live video call request appeared from Sofia's number.

Adrian reached for it.

Elena answered first.

Marcus appeared on screen.

He was wearing a dark jacket.

His expression was calm.

"Hello, Elena."

"Where is Sofia?"

"Safe."

"Show me."

The camera moved.

Sofia sat in a chair with her hands secured in front of her.

She had no visible injuries.

Her eyes met the camera.

Then the view returned to Marcus.

"What do you want?" Elena asked.

"The watch."

"Why?"

"Because Samuel hid something none of us ever found."

"You mean the final ledger."

Marcus smiled.

"So you found that much."

Adrian stepped beside Elena.

"If you touch her—"

Marcus laughed.

"You were always bad at threats, Adrian."

"Try me."

"No need."

Marcus looked at Elena again.

"Bring the watch to the old Marlowe warehouse in Red Hook at midnight."

Elena remembered the fake kidnapping photo.

The cuff link.

The first clue.

"You've been leading us there since this morning."

"Correct."

"Why?"

"Because that's where Samuel started recording the truth."

"Why not go yourself?"

"Because the final lock is biometric."

Elena's skin went cold.

"Whose?"

Marcus smiled.

"Yours."

The call ended.

Adrian immediately said no.

"We're not taking you there."

Elena looked at him.

"He needs me alive."

"Until the lock opens."

"Then we make sure he never gets me alone after it does."

The federal investigator shook his head.

"We can control the site."

Victor spoke from the table.

"No, you can't."

Everyone looked at him.

He stood slowly.

"That warehouse was built before Samuel renovated it."

"It has service tunnels under the east loading bay."

Adrian frowned.

"How many exits?"

"Four that I know of."

"And how many does Marcus know?"

Victor looked toward the photograph.

"Probably all of them."

Elena studied her uncle.

"Why are you helping us?"

Victor looked at her for a long time.

"Because I spent twelve years obeying a ghost."

His voice broke.

"And because if Madeline really knew Richard was using her voice, then I helped destroy my family for a woman who was already dead."

Elena felt no pity.

Not yet.

But she understood regret when she saw it.

"Then help me end it."

At 11:54 P.M., Elena stood outside the old warehouse wearing a wire beneath her coat.

The silver watch rested in her pocket.

Adrian waited in a surveillance van two blocks away.

He had argued until the final minute.

Elena had refused to change the plan.

Before she stepped out, he caught her wrist gently.

"If anything feels wrong, leave."

She looked at him.

"Everything has felt wrong since I woke up married to you."

A faint smile touched his face.

"Fair."

She hesitated.

"Adrian."

"Yes?"

"If I don't get the chance later, I was wrong about one thing."

His eyes searched hers.

"Which thing?"

"I thought you were calm because none of this scared you."

She glanced toward the warehouse.

"Now I think you're calm because it does."

Adrian said nothing.

Elena stepped away before she could say more.

At midnight exactly, the warehouse door opened.

Marcus stood inside.

Behind him, Sofia was nowhere in sight.

"You're late," he said.

Elena checked her watch.

"By eleven seconds."

Marcus smiled.

"Samuel would have liked that answer."

May you like

Elena walked inside.

The door closed behind her.
