Chapter 8: Checkmate, Vivian
The figure punched a code into the keypad. Beep. Beep. Beep.
Before the safe could open, the hallway was suddenly flooded with blinding light. Alexander, Cole, and two uniformed police officers stepped out from the adjacent study.
"Game over, Marcus," Alexander said coldly.
The figure froze, slowly peeling off his uniform cap. It was one of the newly hired valet drivers.
"He's a private investigator," Alexander announced, holding up a tablet displaying high-definition footage. "Hired by Vivian Vance. We tracked the wire transfers this afternoon while you were busy trying to ruin an innocent woman's life."
Vivian, who had slinked away from the party to watch her plan unfold, stumbled backward into the hallway, her face pale beneath her mask. The police officers immediately moved forward, clicking handcuffs onto the investigator and then turning to Vivian.

"You can't do this! I'm Vivian Vance! I belong in this house!" she shrieked, thrashing against the officers as they dragged her away.
Maya stepped out of the shadows, exhaling a breath she felt she’d been holding for days. Alexander turned to her, the coldness in his eyes vanishing instantly.
