Chapter 6: Trust in the Storm

"You think I stole it?" Maya’s voice shook, not with fear, but with profound betrayal. After all the late-night conversations, the shared vulnerabilities, he actually thought she was a thief.

"I didn't say that," Alexander snapped, rubbing his temples. "But Cole found pawn shop receipts in your bedroom drawer. Receipts for jewelry."

"What? That's impossible! I've never—" Maya stopped. Someone had planted them. The realization hit her like a freight train. "Vivian."

Cole scoffed. "Ms. Vivian hasn't been in this house for months."

"Think about it, Alexander," Maya pleaded, stepping closer to his desk, ignoring the security guard. "I found her trying to rob your grandmother. I humiliated her. She’s framing me."

Alexander stared at Maya. Logic dictated he fire her immediately, call the police, and cut his losses. But his gut—and his heart—screamed otherwise. He looked at her honest, desperate eyes.

"Cole, leave us," Alexander ordered. Once the door clicked shut, he moved around the desk and gently grabbed Maya's shoulders. "I don't believe you did it. But we need proof to clear your name. Tonight at the gala, we lay a trap."
