Chapter 14 - The Camera That Survived.

Claire's disappearance changed the investigation immediately.

Her attorney claimed she needed time to arrange a voluntary appearance.

The sheriff's office called it failure to appear as agreed.

Ethan called it predictable.

Mara corrected him.

"Predictable does not mean harmless."

Security around Rose's house doubled.

Noah's location was removed from every shared family calendar.

Only six people knew where he was.

Richard was not one of them.

At Vale Meridian, however, Richard behaved as if nothing had happened.

His town hall began at eleven sharp.

He stood beneath the company logo and told eight thousand employees that leadership required calm during personal turbulence.

He never said Ethan's name in the first five minutes.

He did not need to.

The implication did the work.

Ethan watched from Rose's kitchen while warming a bottle.

Anna leaned against the counter.

"Does that make you angry?"

"Yes."

"You don't look angry."

"I'm holding hot milk."

She smiled.

Richard continued speaking about continuity, discipline, and responsibility.

Then a reporter in the employee media area asked whether he had visited Ethan's home during the weeks before the gala.

Richard paused.

"I visit family often."

"Were you in the nursery?"

His smile thinned.

"That question has no relevance to company operations."

Ethan looked at Anna.

"He hates not controlling the questions."

"So do you."

Ethan looked offended.

"That is completely different."

Anna laughed quietly.

The sound surprised both of them.

For a few seconds, the crisis felt farther away.

Then Mara called.

"We recovered remote backup fragments from the hidden camera system."

Ethan set the bottle down.

"Video?"

"Video and partial audio."

Anna's smile disappeared.

"How much?"

"Enough that you should come to the secure office."

They could not bring Noah to the office, so Ethan went alone with Rebecca while Anna stayed with Rose, Margaret, and private security.

Mara's temporary forensic workspace occupied a private conference room at a downtown law firm unrelated to Vale Meridian.

Two monitors displayed recovered clips.

"The camera was configured to sync short motion events to an overseas cloud account," Mara explained.

"Why overseas?"

"To make tracing harder."

"Whose account?"

"Created with a false identity."

"Of course."

Mara pressed play.

The first recovered clip showed the hidden nursery room six weeks before the gala.

Claire entered with Graham Pierce.

The audio crackled.

Graham's voice was faint but recognizable.

"You need patterns, not one event."

Claire answered.

"He's a baby. Patterns are easy."

Ethan's hands tightened on the table.

Rebecca touched his arm once.

Not comfort.

A reminder to keep watching.

Graham opened a folder.

"The medical record needs to look organic."

Claire paced.

"And Ethan?"

"Exhausted. Defensive. Increasingly isolated."

"He won't sign guardianship papers."

Graham looked toward the camera.

"Then he won't need to."

The clip ended.

Ethan stared at the black screen.

"Again."

Mara replayed it.

The words did not change.

The second clip showed Peter Cole installing the monitor while Daniel Ross stood at the door.

The third showed Richard entering alone.

He sat at the folding table and waited.

Claire arrived six minutes later.

Richard spoke first.

"You're pushing too fast."

Claire crossed her arms.

"You wanted the marriage moved up."

"I wanted access to the trust."

"Same result."

"Not if Ethan starts asking questions."

Claire laughed.

"Ethan asks questions about bridges, contracts, and politicians."

Her expression sharpened.

"He doesn't ask questions about people he loves."

The sentence cut deeper than Ethan expected.

Because it was true.

Richard leaned toward her.

"Anna is the problem."

Claire's face hardened.

"I know."

"Then remove her."

"I tried."

"Try harder."

The clip ended.

Mara opened one more recovered fragment before moving on.

It showed Claire alone in the hidden room practicing lines while looking toward the camera.

"Ethan, you're exhausted."

She paused and tried again.

"Ethan, everyone is worried about you."

Then another version.

"You need to let me handle Noah for a few days."

Claire stopped, frowned at herself, and changed her expression from frustration to concern.

Ethan watched in stunned silence.

The phrases were almost identical to conversations he remembered having with her over the previous month.

What he had interpreted as spontaneous concern had been rehearsed.

Even the pauses had been practiced.

Rebecca looked at him.

"This is why manipulation feels convincing."

Ethan did not answer.

The video continued for another minute.

Claire practiced saying Anna's name with sympathy instead of anger.

"I think Anna means well, but she's too attached."

Ethan remembered that sentence too.

She had said it over breakfast while he read email.

He had barely looked up.

Now he understood that the scheme had not only used hidden cameras.

It had used his inattention.

The realization hurt more than he expected because nobody had needed to silence him.

They had only needed to keep him busy.

Rebecca exhaled slowly.

"That is very bad for Richard."

"Good."

Mara looked at Ethan.

"There is more."

The fourth clip came from the afternoon of November nineteenth.

Claire carried Noah into the hidden room.

Richard stood nearby.

The baby was crying.

Claire hummed softly.

Blue Moon.

Noah's crying intensified.

Ethan felt his stomach turn.

Claire removed the small blue bottle from her pocket.

The camera angle did not clearly show what she did with it.

But she handled Noah's pacifier seconds later.

Richard looked away.

Not because he was shocked.

Because he did not want to watch.

That distinction mattered.

Claire returned the pacifier to Noah.

The clip jumped forward.

Nine minutes later, Noah was quiet and limp with sleep against her shoulder.

Richard asked,

"Is that safe?"

Claire answered,

"Theresa said the product is mild."

Richard frowned.

"Theresa refused to cooperate."

"Then she'll be replaced."

Ethan stopped the video.

His hands were shaking.

"He knew."

Mara nodded.

"He knew enough to ask."

"And he stayed."

"Yes."

Rebecca's voice was hard.

"Do not call him."

Ethan looked at her.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were thinking about it."

"I was thinking about several things."

"Think about your son instead."

That stopped him.

Mara played the final recovered clip.

It was recorded two nights before the gala.

Graham, Claire, and Richard stood around the table.

A printed timeline lay between them.

Ethan recognized the highlighted gala schedule found in Claire's room.

Graham pointed to 7:18 p.m.

"The alarm creates separation."

Richard shook his head.

"Too public."

Claire looked irritated.

"Public is the point."

"The child cannot be hurt."

Richard's voice was firm.

Claire smiled thinly.

"No one is hurting him."

Graham looked at her.

"The appearance of danger is enough."

Ethan felt Rebecca go still beside him.

Claire tapped Anna's name on the paper.

"And if she interferes?"

Graham answered.

"Then she becomes the cause."

The recovered audio ended there.

For a long moment, nobody in the conference room spoke.

Then Mara's phone rang.

She listened.

"Understood."

She ended the call.

"Claire's car was found at O'Hare."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Did she fly out?"

"No record under her name."

"Then where is she?"

Mara looked at the final frame frozen on the monitor.

Claire's finger rested over Anna's name.

"My guess is she is not running away."

Rebecca looked at her.

"What is she doing?"

"Trying to finish something."

Ethan's phone vibrated.

A text message appeared from an unknown number.

May you like

It contained a photograph taken through a window.

The image showed Rose Reed's house.
