Chapter 9 - The False Alarm.

Ethan met Dr. Levin in the downstairs morning room.
Mara came with him.
Anna remained upstairs with Noah and Theresa.
The doctor closed the door.
"Before I tell you anything, understand that a screening result is not the same as a final conclusion."
Ethan nodded impatiently.
"Tell me."
"We found evidence of an over-the-counter calming compound in Noah's system."
Ethan's face went blank.
Mara raised one hand.
"Can you determine amount or source?"
"Not precisely from the first screen."
"Could it occur accidentally?"
"There are innocent explanations for trace exposure, but the concentration is higher than I would expect from environmental contact."
Ethan gripped the back of a chair.
"What could it do?"
Dr. Levin answered carefully.
"Drowsiness, reduced responsiveness, altered sleep, and in some infants more serious complications."
Mara looked toward Ethan.
"Does this match Anna's notes?"
"Yes."
The doctor continued.
"I want confirmatory testing through the hospital and continued observation."
"Do whatever you need."
"I also recommend we preserve any feeding products, bottles, pacifiers, or supplements from the nursery."
Ethan looked at Mara.
"The formula disappeared."
Dr. Levin's expression darkened.
"Then find it."
At nine in the morning, county investigators formally entered the estate with warrants for specific digital devices and relevant property areas.
Ethan cooperated fully.
Mara stepped back from anything that had now become a law-enforcement evidence matter.
The mansion transformed again.
Uniformed deputies moved through service corridors.
Technicians photographed the security office.
Every employee who had worked the gala was interviewed separately.
Claire's suite was sealed until officers completed their search.
Ethan remained with Noah.
For the first time in his adult life, he ignored forty-seven work messages in a row.
At ten twenty, his chief operating officer called directly.
Ethan answered only because the man rarely called twice.
"Martin."
"We have a problem at headquarters."
Ethan looked toward Noah's crib.
"Add it to the line."
"Richard has called an emergency board session for noon."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"On what basis?"
"Leadership instability."
Mara, standing nearby, heard the phrase.
"He's moving early," she said quietly.
Ethan put the phone on speaker.
"What exactly did Richard circulate?"
Martin hesitated.
"A memorandum expressing concern about your judgment after an alleged domestic assault at last night's gala."
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
Claire had moved faster than he expected.
"Anything else?"
"He claims you are under investigation."
"For what?"
"Assault and child endangerment."
Anna entered just in time to hear the last words.
Her face changed.
"Child endangerment?"
Martin continued.
"He says the baby was injured during a conflict between you and household staff."
Ethan's voice sharpened.
"Noah is not injured."
"I know."
"Does the board?"
"Not yet."
Ethan thought for two seconds.
"Send Dr. Levin's current statement if he approves."
Mara shook her head.
"Only factual medical status, nothing about the investigation."
Ethan nodded.
"And tell the board I'll attend remotely."
Martin exhaled.
"Ethan, Richard is also asking the trust administrator to suspend your voting proxy pending review."
The room went still.
There it was.
Not money.
Not marriage.
Control.
"Which trust administrator?"
"Halston."
Margaret, entering behind Anna, looked stricken.
"He can't do that without cause."
Martin answered.
"He's claiming cause."
Ethan looked at the clock.
Two hours until the meeting.
"Then we'll give them facts."
Mara spoke quietly after the call ended.
"You need separate counsel."
"I know."
"Not anyone who has ever worked with Graham Pierce."
"I know."
Margaret stepped forward.
"I have someone."
Ethan looked at her skeptically.
"Who?"
"Rebecca Sloan."
He recognized the name.
Rebecca had represented a pension fund against Vale Meridian twelve years earlier and nearly cost the company fifty million dollars.
Ethan had despised her professionally.
That suddenly made her attractive.
"Call her."
Margaret did.
Rebecca Sloan arrived by video within twenty minutes.
She had silver hair cut to her jaw, a dark green blouse, and the expression of someone who considered panic a waste of billable time.
"Tell me only what you can prove."
Ethan summarized the foyer incident, missing footage, hidden room, forged document, medical concern, Daniel's statement, and Richard's unexplained nursery visit.
Rebecca listened without interrupting.
Then she asked one question.
"Did you strike Claire?"
Ethan answered immediately.
"Yes."
Anna looked toward him.
Rebecca nodded.
"Good."
Ethan frowned.
"Good?"
"Good that you answered without decorating it."
She leaned closer to the camera.
"Your defense begins with truth, not strategy."
"I acted when she moved toward Anna again."
"That may matter."
Rebecca's tone stayed cool.
"It does not erase your action."
"I understand."
"Then do not let anyone turn this into a choice between pretending you were perfect and admitting everyone else is innocent."
Ethan nodded.
He liked her more than he expected.
At eleven thirty, the sheriff's investigator emerged from Claire's suite carrying a sealed bag.
Inside was a second prepaid phone.
Another officer carried a leather document folder.
Rebecca asked to see only what investigators could legally disclose.
The answer was almost nothing.
But one fact was immediately relevant to Ethan.
The folder contained a printed itinerary for the gala.
Several times were highlighted.
7:10 p.m. - Anna redirected.
7:12 p.m. - nursery corridor offline.
7:14 p.m. - C with N to foyer.
7:18 p.m. - emergency call.
Ethan pointed to the final line.
"What emergency call?"
No one knew.
At exactly eleven forty-eight, the mansion's fire alarm erupted.
Lights flashed.
A mechanical voice ordered immediate evacuation.
Anna grabbed Noah without hesitation.
Theresa opened the nursery door.
Security began moving everyone toward the east stairs.
Mara looked at Owen.
"Do you smell smoke?"
"No."
Ethan's eyes went to the printed gala itinerary.
Emergency call.
"Stop."
Anna turned.
"What?"
"This may be the event they planned."
The alarm continued screaming.
Owen checked his tablet.
"Signal says fire in the west mechanical room."
Mara looked at him.
"Visual confirmation?"
"None."
The sheriff's investigator ordered evacuation anyway.
No one argued.
They moved Noah toward the secure side exit.
As Ethan reached the lower landing, he saw a man in a fire-service jacket walking toward them from the opposite hall.
The man wore a helmet low over his face.
He held out both hands.
"I'll take the infant."
May you like
Ethan stopped cold.
No firefighter had entered through the front gate.
