Chapter 15 - The Gala of Glass.

Ethan called Anna before he finished reading the message.

She answered immediately.

"We're inside."

"Move away from the windows."

Her voice changed.

"What happened?"

"Someone found the house."

He sent the photograph to Mara and private security.

Within seconds, the protective team around Rose's home locked down the street-facing rooms and moved Noah to an interior hallway.

Ethan's heart pounded hard enough to make his vision feel narrow.

"I'm coming back."

Mara blocked the conference-room door.

"No."

Ethan stared at her.

"Get out of my way."

"Your movement may lead whoever took that photograph straight to the location if they are watching you."

"They already know the location."

"They may not know which exit route security will use."

Rebecca stepped between them.

"Listen to her."

Ethan hated every second of it.

He hated being physically separated from Noah.

He hated that patience now felt like cowardice even when it was the safest choice.

Anna's voice came through his phone.

"Ethan."

He lifted it.

"I'm here."

"We're moving now."

"Where?"

"They told me not to say on an open line."

Mara nodded approvingly.

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Do what they say."

"I will."

"Keep him with you."

"I will."

A small sound came through the phone.

Noah.

Ethan opened his eyes.

"Let me hear him."

Anna held the phone closer.

Noah babbled once.

The sound steadied Ethan more effectively than any advice.

"Go."

The line ended.

Security evacuated Rose, Anna, Noah, and Margaret through a rear alley into two unmarked vehicles.

They split routes immediately.

No one followed.

The person who took the photograph was not found.

But a traffic camera two blocks away recorded a dark SUV leaving minutes later.

The plate belonged to Morrow House Events.

Richard's intermediary.

By late afternoon, arrest warrants had been requested for several participants in the conspiracy.

Graham Pierce surrendered through counsel.

Peter remained in custody.

Daniel continued cooperating.

Richard's attorneys announced he had no knowledge of criminal conduct and would remain temporary chairman pending "clarification of facts."

Claire was still missing.

Ethan wanted the company to suspend Richard immediately.

Rebecca advised against making the decision personally while the board process remained contested.

Susan Park solved the problem for him.

She and six independent directors called an emergency session and removed Richard from temporary leadership by a seven-to-four vote.

Martin was appointed interim chief executive until Ethan's voluntary leave ended.

For the first time in two days, Richard had no official chair.

That should have reduced the danger.

Instead, Mara became more concerned.

"People become unpredictable when leverage disappears."

Ethan looked at her.

"Richard or Claire?"

"Both."

That evening, Vale Meridian's annual winter donor reception was scheduled at a downtown hotel ballroom known for its forty-foot glass atrium.

Ethan had planned to cancel his appearance.

Rebecca advised him to reconsider.

"Why?"

"Because Richard expects you to hide."

"You want me to attend a public event while Claire is missing?"

"I want you to attend a controlled event with law enforcement aware, private security in place, and Noah nowhere near it."

Mara understood the strategy.

"Make the public story boring."

Rebecca nodded.

"Exactly."

Ethan frowned.

"Boring?"

"You arrive. You speak calmly. You acknowledge an active investigation. You refuse to speculate."

Rebecca folded her arms.

"Then you leave."

"And that helps how?"

"It destroys the image of a man unraveling in secret."

Ethan agreed reluctantly.

Anna did not.

When he told her by secure call, she stared at him through the screen.

"You think Claire won't know you're there?"

"She will."

"Then why make yourself easy to find?"

"Because everyone else will know where I am too."

Anna looked unconvinced.

"That sounds like something a man in a tuxedo says before making a bad decision."

Ethan almost smiled.

"I promise not to stand under any chandeliers."

"Not funny."

"A little funny."

Her expression softened despite herself.

Then Noah reached toward the screen.

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"I'll be careful."

Anna nodded.

"Come back."

The request was simple.

It carried more weight than all the board votes combined.

The winter reception began at seven.

The hotel atrium glittered with reflected light from hundreds of glass panels.

A large American flag stood behind the stage beside the Vale Meridian banner.

Ethan arrived through a secured entrance with Rebecca and two protective agents.

Reporters shouted questions.

He answered none until reaching the microphone.

"My son is safe."

The room quieted.

"There is an active investigation involving people who had access to my family and my home."

Cameras flashed.

"I made a serious mistake during the confrontation at my residence when I struck Claire Mercer."

Rebecca watched from the side of the stage.

Ethan continued.

"I will not pretend that action did not happen simply because other conduct is now under investigation."

A murmur moved through the room.

"I am cooperating fully with authorities, and I will not use my company, my name, or my family to interfere with that process."

He paused.

"My only priority is my child's safety."

The statement lasted fifty-three seconds.

It was exactly as boring as Rebecca wanted.

Then Ethan stepped away from the microphone.

A reporter near the back raised her voice.

"Mr. Vale, is it true Claire Mercer has evidence that Anna Reed was paid to manipulate your son?"

Ethan stopped.

Rebecca looked sharply toward the reporter.

The question had not appeared in any public filing.

"Who told you that?"

The reporter held up her phone.

"I just received documents."

Several other phones began buzzing.

Then dozens.

An anonymous package had been emailed to every reporter at the reception.

It contained bank records showing forty thousand dollars deposited into an account bearing Anna Reed's name.

The deposits began two months before the gala.

Ethan stared at the documents on Rebecca's phone.

"They're fake."

Rebecca did not answer immediately.

"Maybe."

"Anna doesn't have forty thousand dollars."

"Do you know that?"

Ethan looked at her.

The question annoyed him.

Then he remembered what Rebecca had taught him.

Trust was not proof.

"No."

Rebecca nodded.

"Good answer."

Mara's voice came through Ethan's earpiece.

"Do not respond publicly yet."

The room became louder.

Reporters shouted Anna's name.

Then the glass doors at the far end of the atrium opened.

Claire walked in.

She wore a simple white coat over a black dress.

Her blonde hair was loose around her shoulders.

Every camera turned toward her.

Ethan did not move.

Security did.

Claire raised both hands.

"I'm here voluntarily."

Mara spoke through Ethan's earpiece.

"Stay where you are."

Claire looked directly at Ethan across the ballroom.

May you like

Then she smiled.

"Ask Anna whose name is really on that account."
