Chapter 5 - The Woman at the Gate.

No one opened the gate.

Mara ordered the outside guards to keep the woman in view while cameras recorded everything.

Anna stood beside Noah's crib with both hands clenched tightly together.

"I've never seen her before."

Ethan looked at the live security image on Owen's tablet.

The woman appeared to be in her early forties.

She wore a camel-colored coat and stood beside a dark sedan with one hand raised toward the intercom.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm for someone claiming family had refused to recognize her.

"Can we hear her?"

Owen turned up the audio.

The woman spoke again.

"Tell Anna it's Elise."

Anna's face drained of color.

Ethan turned toward her.

"You know that name."

Anna nodded slowly.

"My mother's name was Elise."

"Was?"

"She died when I was seventeen."

The room became very quiet.

Margaret, who had returned from downstairs, moved closer to Anna.

"Are you certain?"

Anna looked at her with an almost offended grief.

"I buried her."

Mara watched the gate feed carefully.

"Then the name is meant to get a reaction."

Ethan's anger returned in a cleaner form.

"Bring her to the security vestibule."

Mara shook her head.

"No."

Ethan looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because right now she is outside your perimeter, on camera, and under our control."

Mara pointed toward the gate feed.

"Inside, she becomes another variable."

Ethan accepted the logic.

"Then talk to her outside."

"That's what I'm going to do."

Anna stepped forward.

"I want to hear."

Mara studied her for a moment.

"You can listen remotely."

Ten minutes later, Mara stood beyond the outer gate with another investigator several feet behind her.

The woman smiled politely.

"You must be security."

"Who are you?"

"Elise Reed."

Upstairs, Anna whispered.

"That's impossible."

Mara's voice came through the speaker.

"Do you have identification?"

The woman removed a wallet.

She handed over a driver's license.

Mara examined it under the gate light.

The license did say Elise Reed.

The photograph matched.

Anna stared at the screen.

"I don't understand."

Ethan looked toward Owen.

"Run it."

Owen entered the license information into a secure background service.

The result appeared within seconds.

Elise Reed existed.

She lived in Milwaukee.

She was forty-two years old.

She had no apparent relation to Anna.

Mara asked the next question.

"Why are you here?"

The woman looked directly toward the gate camera.

"Because Anna called me."

Anna made a sharp sound.

"No, I didn't."

Mara remained expressionless.

"When?"

"Around midnight."

"From what number?"

Elise produced her phone.

Mara did not take it.

"Hold it up."

The screen showed an incoming call listed under Anna's full name.

Anna stared at Ethan.

"My phone has been with me all night."

Ethan reached out.

"Show me."

Anna handed it over.

Her call log contained no outgoing call to Elise.

Mara asked the woman what Anna had said.

Elise's answer was immediate.

"She said she was in trouble and needed me to come before Mr. Vale found out what she'd done."

Anna's eyes filled with angry tears.

"That's a lie."

Margaret put a hand on her shoulder.

"We know."

Elise continued.

"She said there was money in the nursery and she had hidden some of it."

Ethan's expression changed.

Mara heard it in his silence.

"What money?"

Elise reached into her coat slowly.

The investigator behind Mara shifted.

"Easy."

Elise withdrew an envelope.

"This."

She held it up.

Inside were photographs.

Mara looked at the first one.

Then the second.

Her face remained unreadable.

"Where did you get these?"

"Anna sent them to me."

Upstairs, Anna stepped toward the screen.

"What are they?"

Mara turned one photograph toward the gate camera.

It showed Anna standing inside Ethan's private study.

The timestamp was from the previous Tuesday.

Claire had told the truth about that part.

The second photograph showed Anna opening the old key cabinet.

The third appeared to show her placing something into the pocket of her uniform.

Ethan looked at Anna.

She shook her head immediately.

"That's the key I told you about."

"I know."

"I wasn't stealing anything."

"I know."

The certainty in his voice startled her.

Ethan turned back to the screen.

"Ask where the pictures came from."

Mara did.

Elise smiled nervously.

"Anna sent them."

"How?"

"Encrypted message."

"Show me."

Elise hesitated.

For the first time, her confidence cracked.

"I deleted it."

Mara's voice remained calm.

"You drove nearly ninety miles in the middle of the night because a woman you claim is your sister sent you photographs of herself committing a theft, and then you deleted the messages before arriving."

Elise swallowed.

"I panicked."

"No."

Mara stepped closer.

"You were paid."

Elise looked toward her car.

The movement was small.

The investigator behind Mara noticed it too.

He walked toward the sedan.

"Don't touch my car."

Elise's calm vanished.

Mara watched her carefully.

"Why not?"

"Because you don't have permission."

"Correct."

Mara stepped back.

"So we'll wait for law enforcement."

Elise's face changed completely.

"You said there weren't police."

Upstairs, Ethan and Anna looked at each other.

Mara's eyes narrowed.

"Who told you that?"

Elise said nothing.

"Who told you there weren't police here?"

The woman stepped backward.

"I'm leaving."

Mara did not stop her.

"That's your choice."

Elise hurried toward the driver's side door.

Before she could get in, headlights appeared behind her.

A county sheriff's vehicle turned onto the estate road.

Mara had called twenty minutes earlier without announcing it.

Elise froze.

Then she did something no one expected.

She reached into her coat and threw a small object over the stone wall bordering the estate.

The investigator beside Mara immediately moved toward where it landed.

The deputies approached.

Within minutes, the object was recovered from the grass.

It was a prepaid phone.

The screen was still lit.

One message remained visible.

Mara photographed it before anyone touched the device.

The message contained only six words.

IF ANNA TALKS, USE THE PHOTOS.

There was no sender name.

Only a number.

Owen ran the number through his internal records.

It matched a contact stored on Daniel Ross's company emergency file.

The contact belonged to Graham Pierce.

Ethan stared at the result.

Then his phone rang again.

This time it was Claire.

He answered on speaker.

Her voice was steady.

"You should have let me leave quietly."

Ethan looked at the hidden camera feed, the fake sister at the gate, and Anna standing beside his sleeping son.

"You should have stayed away from my child."

Claire was silent for one beat.

May you like

Then she said something that made Margaret grip the back of a chair.

"Noah is the reason none of you understand what's really at stake."
