Chapter 19 - The Door Opens Again.

Ethan was moving before Anna finished speaking.

Mara stopped him at the library entrance.

"Security is already there."

"I don't care."

"Then care about leading someone to her."

The same argument as before.

The same unbearable logic.

Ethan forced himself to stay still.

"Anna, tell me what you hear."

Her voice came through the phone.

"Nothing now."

"Where is Noah?"

"With Rose in the interior bedroom."

"Security?"

"Two agents are inside."

A man's voice appeared faintly in the background.

"Ms. Reed, stay back."

One of the agents.

Ethan gripped the phone.

"Do exactly what they say."

"I am."

There was a knock.

Three slow taps.

Then silence.

The protective agent checked the hallway camera remotely.

No one stood outside.

A small envelope lay on the floor.

The agent refused to touch it.

Building security evacuated the adjacent units while police responded.

The envelope contained no dangerous material.

Inside was a key.

An old brass key.

And a handwritten note.

Ethan recognized Claire's handwriting when a photograph reached his phone.

NORTH FOYER CLOCK.

Mara looked at the message.

"She wants us to find something at the estate."

Rebecca frowned.

"Or walk into something at the estate."

Police controlled the search.

Ethan insisted on going but remained behind the initial entry team.

The north foyer contained a tall eighteenth-century clock that had belonged to Ethan's great-grandmother.

He had walked past it thousands of times.

Behind its lower pendulum panel was a tiny brass keyhole.

The key from Claire's envelope fit.

Inside the clock was a flash drive.

One file.

One video.

The timestamp showed the night before the gala.

Claire sat alone in the hidden nursery room facing the camera.

She looked exhausted.

Not frightened.

Angry.

"Richard, if you're watching this later, understand something."

She leaned closer.

"I kept my own copies."

Ethan exchanged a look with Mara.

Claire continued.

"You promised me a marriage, a proxy, and enough money to leave when this was over."

She smiled without warmth.

"But Graham told me about the codicil."

Mara's expression sharpened.

"She knew before the gala."

Claire kept speaking.

"You were never going to let me control the trust."

"You planned to blame me when the guardianship challenge failed."

Her face hardened.

"So if I go down, I will not go alone."

The video ended.

Rebecca exhaled.

"She turned on Richard before the plan even happened."

Ethan looked toward the staircase.

"Then why continue?"

Mara answered.

"Because she still thought she could force a better deal."

A sound came from the front of the house.

The massive double doors opened.

Every officer in the foyer turned.

Richard Vale stood on the threshold.

He wore no coat despite the winter cold.

His hair was disordered.

For the first time in Ethan's memory, his uncle looked like a man who had run out of prepared expressions.

Two attorneys stood behind him.

A third man carried a document case.

Richard raised his hands.

"I am here with counsel."

The lead investigator stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale, remain where you are."

Richard obeyed.

His eyes found Ethan across the foyer.

"You found the drive."

Ethan said nothing.

Richard laughed quietly.

"Of course you did."

His attorney whispered something.

Richard ignored him.

"Claire always needed an audience."

Ethan's voice was flat.

"You recruited her."

The attorney interrupted.

"Mr. Vale will not answer questions outside a formal setting."

Richard looked at Ethan anyway.

"I recruited someone to help you stop acting like your father."

Margaret appeared at the top of the staircase.

"Do not speak about him."

Richard looked up.

"Margaret."

"Do not say his name."

Her voice trembled with anger.

Richard's face softened for an instant.

"You think I wanted the child hurt?"

Margaret descended one step.

"You knew he was being used."

"I told them he had to remain safe."

"You called fear temporary."

Richard went still.

The recording had reached her too.

His attorney closed his eyes briefly.

Richard looked at Ethan.

"You have no idea what it took to keep this company from collapsing under your father's sentimentality."

Ethan almost smiled.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The speech you have been waiting thirty years to give."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You inherited everything."

"And Noah inherited seventeen percent you thought belonged to you."

"That trust is a mistake."

"It belongs to him."

"He's an infant."

"Exactly."

Ethan stepped closer but remained behind the line investigators had established.

"Which is why every adult around him should have protected him instead of seeing a voting block in a crib."

Richard's expression changed.

For once, he had no answer.

Then another voice came from the open doors.

"He never saw Noah at all."

Claire stood outside beside two investigators.

She had been brought to the estate as part of a controlled evidence identification requested by prosecutors.

No one had told Ethan she was coming.

Richard stared at her.

Claire smiled faintly.

"Surprised?"

His face twisted with anger.

"You idiot."

"There he is."

Claire's calm expression sharpened.

"The real Richard."

Her attorney told her to stop speaking.

She ignored him too.

For several seconds, the foyer became exactly what it had been on gala night.

A beautiful room full of people pretending control belonged to whoever spoke first.

Ethan looked toward the marble floor where Anna had fallen.

Then he looked at Claire.

"Why Noah?"

Rebecca stepped forward.

"Ethan."

He raised one hand.

"One question."

Claire's face changed.

The performance weakened.

"He was never supposed to be hurt."

Ethan's eyes hardened.

"That is not an answer."

Claire looked toward Richard.

"Because everything went through him."

"The trust."

"The trust. The board. Your attention. Your fear."

Her voice lowered.

"If Noah looked unstable, you looked distracted."

"If Anna looked negligent, I looked foolish for trusting her."

Claire nodded.

"If you lost control once in public, Richard had his board story."

Ethan thought of the foyer slap.

"And I gave it to him."

Claire said nothing.

He had.

That truth belonged to him even if the trap belonged to them.

The lead investigator ended the exchange.

Richard and Claire were separated immediately.

Their attorneys objected to nearly everything.

No one cared in the moment.

As Richard was escorted toward a waiting vehicle, he looked back at Margaret.

"You choose him every time."

Margaret's answer came without hesitation.

"Today I choose the child."

The doors closed behind Richard.

Minutes later, Claire was taken through another exit.

Ethan remained in the foyer with Rebecca and Margaret.

He expected relief.

Instead, he felt exhausted.

Then his phone rang.

Anna.

He answered.

"It's over?"

Ethan looked at the enormous doors.

"The dangerous part tonight is over."

Anna understood the careful wording.

"Good."

Noah made a sound in the background.

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Can I come see him?"

May you like

Anna's answer was immediate.

"Yes."
