Chapter 11: The Ashes of Vanity

Chapter 11: The Ashes of Vanity

Veronica paced the length of the luxurious penthouse suite at the Plaza Hotel. The room cost five thousand dollars a night, a sum she had secured by taking out a predatory, high-interest loan against a phantom trust fund. She didn't care. By midnight, Julian Croft was going to wire fifty million dollars to a Cayman account in her name. She would leave New York, leave Damian to rot in federal prison, and start a new life in Monaco as a queen.

She poured herself a glass of vintage champagne, admiring her reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirror. She had beaten the great Elena Voss. She had found the one vulnerability in the ice queen's armor.

A sharp knock echoed at the heavy double doors.

Veronica smiled. It was time. Croft’s men were likely here to deliver the secure routing hardware for the transfer.

She walked to the door and pulled it open, a triumphant greeting dying instantly on her lips.

Standing in the hallway was not a hardened mercenary, but Marcus. He was flanked by two men in immaculate dark suits, their expressions unreadable.

"Good evening, Veronica," Marcus said politely, stepping into the suite without waiting for an invitation.

Veronica stumbled backward, dropping her champagne glass. It shattered on the marble floor, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot. "What are you doing here? Where is Croft's representative? If you touch me, Julian Croft will—"

"Mr. Croft sends his regards," a cool, female voice cut through the air.

Elena Voss stepped out from behind Marcus's men. She was still wearing the white trench coat, looking utterly immaculate and impossibly powerful. In her gloved hand, she held the black leather ledger.

Veronica’s breath caught in her throat. The color drained from her face, leaving her pale and trembling. She looked from the ledger to Elena’s calm, merciless eyes, the horrifying reality of the situation crashing down upon her. Croft had sold her out.

"You..." Veronica whispered, taking another step back until she hit the edge of the velvet sofa. "How did you...?"

"You played a high-stakes game with chips you didn't understand, Veronica," Elena said softly, walking into the center of the room. She tossed the ledger onto the glass coffee table. "You thought you could walk into a warlord's den with a stolen book and dictate the fate of empires. But men like Julian Croft do not respect opportunists. They respect power. And I hold the keys to his vault."

"He promised me fifty million," Veronica choked out, tears of sheer panic welling in her eyes. "He said he was going to destroy you."

"He lied," Elena replied simply.

Elena gestured to Marcus, who pulled a heavy steel thermos from his briefcase, along with a small, specialized blowtorch. He unscrewed the thermos, revealing a highly corrosive industrial thermite compound. He placed the black ledger into a steel firebox he set on the table, poured the compound over the pages, and ignited it.

Veronica watched in paralyzed horror as her only leverage, her fifty-million-dollar lottery ticket, burned with a blinding, ferocious white heat. Within seconds, the ledger was nothing but gray ash and warped leather.

"The physical evidence is gone," Elena said, not looking at the fire, keeping her gaze locked on the broken woman before her. "Arthur Vance will find nothing. Julian Croft has his money, and he has permanently blacklisted you from his network."

"What are you going to do to me?" Veronica sobbed, falling to her knees among the shattered glass of her champagne flute.

"Do to you?" Elena looked down at her, her expression shifting to one of profound boredom. "Nothing. Doing something to you would imply you are a threat. You are simply a ghost."

Elena turned toward the door. "Your lines of credit have been permanently flagged for fraud by our banking partners. This hotel will realize in approximately ten minutes that your collateral is entirely fictitious. I suggest you pack whatever you can carry. The NYPD will be here shortly to arrest you for defrauding an innkeeper."

"Elena, please!" Veronica screamed, reaching out. "I have nothing! Damian left me with nothing!"

"You had a choice to walk away quietly," Elena said, pausing at the threshold. She didn't look back. "You chose war. Enjoy the fallout."

As Elena and her team stepped into the elevator, leaving Veronica sobbing on the floor, Marcus checked his tablet.

"The situation is contained," Marcus reported. "Croft’s funds have been processed through the mirror-chain. We are completely severed from the underworld."

"Good," Elena breathed, feeling the adrenaline finally begin to settle. The shadow war was over. But as she looked out at the glittering lights of the city she now unequivocally ruled, she knew the real battle was just beginning. Arthur Vance was still circling, and the legitimate boardroom she had conquered was filled with old men who would never accept a queen.

She adjusted her coat, a fierce light burning in her eyes. Let them try.
