Chapter 14: The Trojan Horse

The Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria was bathed in sapphire light. A massive LED screen spanned the width of the stage, projecting the sleek, minimalist logo of Voss Global. Tonight was the dawn of a new era. Tonight, Elena Voss was unveiling Project Apex.

The ballroom was packed with the global elite: tech billionaires, senators, foreign dignitaries, and a swarm of international press. This was Elena’s masterstroke. Project Apex wasn't just a corporate initiative; it was a trillion-dollar infrastructure proposal to unify global clean energy grids using Voss Global’s proprietary AI. It was the move that would cement her legacy and make the company completely bulletproof.

Elena stood backstage, wearing a breathtaking, structured white gown that made her look less like a CEO and more like a reigning monarch. She adjusted her earpiece.

"Crowd capacity is at one hundred percent, Elena," Marcus's voice buzzed in her ear. He wasn't in the ballroom; he was in the subterranean server fortress at Voss Global HQ, monitoring the global broadcast. "Teleprompters are synced. The market futures are already trending up based on the rumors alone. You are clear to step out."

"Thank you, Marcus," Elena murmured. She took a deep breath, smoothing her features into a mask of charismatic confidence.

She walked out onto the stage. The applause was deafening. The flashes of a thousand cameras strobed against the dark auditorium. She commanded the room instantly, raising a hand to quiet the crowd.

"For ten years," Elena began, her voice echoing with crystal clarity through the sound system, "Voss Global has operated behind the scenes. We facilitated. We optimized. But we did not lead."

While Elena spoke, captivating the world, the silence in the Voss Global server fortress was shattered by a blaring, red proximity alarm on Marcus's terminal.

Marcus slammed his coffee cup down, his fingers flying across his holographic keyboard. "What the hell is this?"

WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED HARDWARE-LEVEL ACCESS DETECTED. SECTOR 4.

Sector 4 was the Apex mainframe.

"Elena," Marcus said into his headset, his voice tight with controlled panic. "We have a breach. It’s not an external hack. Someone is accessing the core drives through a physical hardware backdoor I didn't know existed."

On stage, Elena didn't miss a beat. She continued her speech, her smile never wavering, while her mind raced. "Trace it," she whispered softly between sentences, pretending to clear her throat.

"I'm trying," Marcus replied frantically. "The encryption is military-grade. They are bypassing the firewalls entirely. They aren't trying to steal the Apex source code, Elena. They are injecting data."

Marcus pulled up the incoming data streams. His blood ran cold. "They are flooding the legitimate Apex ledgers with phantom debt from the old shadow accounts. They are linking your new clean energy initiative directly to the cartel laundering money we just buried. If this data hard-codes into the blockchain, Project Apex will be classified as a massive international fraud scheme."

Elena continued pacing the stage. "We believe that true power is not found in exploiting the old world," she told the audience, projecting warmth while her internal temperature plummeted to absolute zero, "but in engineering the new one."

"Sever the connection, Marcus," she whispered fiercely during the applause.

"I can't!" Marcus shouted. "It’s hardwired into the motherboards. The only way to stop the data injection is to physically cut the power to the Apex servers, which will crash the entire global presentation in front of a billion viewers and send our stock into a death spiral."

"Who is running the intrusion?"

"The IP is bouncing, but the access codes belong to Damian," Marcus said. "He must have installed this before the purge. But he’s in a federal cell. He can't execute this hack from the inside."

Elena’s eyes scanned the VIP section of the dark ballroom. She saw senators. She saw investors. And then, standing near the back exit doors, illuminated briefly by a passing spotlight, she saw him.

Arthur Vance.

He was holding a secure federal tablet, a smug, victorious smile plastered across his face. He wasn't here for the presentation. He was here to execute a federal warrant the exact second the phantom data finished compiling.

Damian had made a deal. Vance was using the backdoor.

"Marcus," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrifying, icy calm as she smiled at the cameras. "How long until the data injection is permanent?"

May you like

"Three minutes. Elena, what do we do?"

"We don't cut the power," Elena replied, staring directly into the camera lens, projecting an aura of absolute invincibility. "We overload it. Execute Protocol Icarus."
