Chapter 4: The Phantom Files

Chapter 4: The Phantom Files

The rain fell in sheets, washing the grime of the city into the storm drains. Damian sat in his rented sedan—a humiliating downgrade from his chauffeured Maybach—parked in the shadowy recess of an underground parking garage in Queens. The engine idled, the heater struggling to cut through the damp chill.

The passenger door opened, and Silas slid into the seat, shaking a wet umbrella onto the floor mats. He smelled of cheap cologne and stale tobacco.

"You have the retainer?" Silas asked, not bothering with pleasantries.

Damian unzipped the leather briefcase and pushed it across the center console. Silas didn't count it. He simply hefted it, judging the weight, and nodded. "Good. Now, what's this supposed ammunition you have against the ice queen?"

Damian pulled a silver encrypted flash drive from his breast pocket. He held it up, the dim streetlights catching its metallic surface. "During my tenure, I had my personal IT guy mirror specific servers on a physical drive. This contains internal communications. Emails where Elena explicitly authorizes aggressive tax avoidance schemes, suppression of unionization efforts in our overseas manufacturing plants, and hush money payouts to local politicians to secure zoning rights."

It was a bluff, mostly. The drive contained heavily doctored emails and circumstantial evidence that Damian had spent the last forty-eight hours desperately cobbling together. It wouldn't hold up in a court of law, but in the court of public opinion? It would be enough to cause a scandal, tank the stock, and force the board to reconsider Elena's leadership. He just needed Silas to leak it to the right investigative journalists.

Silas took the drive, turning it over in his calloused fingers. "And you're sure this connects directly to her? No plausible deniability?"

"Her digital signature is on the approval chains," Damian lied smoothly. "I made sure of it. Leak this to the Wall Street Journal. Let the SEC catch wind of it. I want her dragged out of that building in handcuffs just like I was."

"Consider it done," Silas said, slipping the drive into his pocket. "Give me twenty-four hours to seed the data through proxy servers. Watch the morning news."

Silas exited the car, disappearing into the concrete labyrinth of the garage. Damian gripped the steering wheel, a feral grin spreading across his face. For the first time in days, he felt the intoxicating rush of power. He was going to burn her kingdom to the ground and build his own upon the ashes.

What Damian did not know was that Silas didn't go to a proxy server farm. He walked three blocks in the pouring rain, stepped into a sleek, unmarked black SUV, and handed the silver flash drive directly to Marcus.

"He bit," Silas said, wiping the rain from his face. "The drive is loaded with manufactured evidence. Poorly forged, I might add. A forensic analyst would tear this apart in ten minutes."

Marcus plugged the drive into a secure, isolated terminal in the back of the SUV. He ran a rapid diagnostic. "It’s pathetic. He’s trying to frame her using fragments of his own illegal directives. He just swapped his name for hers on the metadata."

"Does Ms. Voss want me to leak it anyway and let him hang himself with the forgery charges?" Silas asked.

"No," Marcus replied, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the monitor. "Ms. Voss has a much more elegant execution in mind. Keep your phone on, Silas. She will want you present for the finale."

The next morning, Damian woke up in a cheap motel room, his eyes glued to the financial news networks. He waited for the breaking news banner. He waited for the scandal to break. He waited for Elena Voss's name to be dragged through the mud.

Instead, the headline dominating every network was the spectacular collapse of Sterling Equities.

RICHARD STERLING FILES FOR CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY FOLLOWING DISASTROUS SHORT SQUEEZE.

Damian watched, horrified, as pundits praised the mysterious, brilliant defensive maneuver orchestrated by the newly revealed CEO of Voss Global, Elena Voss. They called her a visionary. They called her a titan.

His phone buzzed. It was a text from Silas.

The drop is done. Meet me at the penthouse at 10 AM. It's over.

Damian’s heart pounded. The penthouse? The old Voss Global executive suite? Why would Silas want to meet there? Unless... unless Silas had managed to leverage the files to get Damian back inside. A wave of arrogant relief washed over him. He quickly showered, put on his best remaining suit, and hailed a cab to Manhattan. He was going home.
