Chapter 16: The Counter-Strike

The Waldorf Astoria’s VIP lounge was a sanctuary of hushed conversations, clinking crystal, and stratospheric wealth. Waiters in white tuxedos circulated with trays of vintage champagne and beluga caviar. Elena stood near a sweeping window overlooking Park Avenue, accepting congratulations from a rotating cast of senators and hedge fund managers. She accepted their praise with practiced, elegant modesty.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him approaching. Arthur Vance moved through the crowd with the stiff, rigid posture of a man walking to his own execution.

Elena politely excused herself from the CEO of a German automotive conglomerate and turned to face the US Attorney.

"Arthur," Elena said, her tone dripping with honeyed warmth. "I didn't realize the Department of Justice was on the guest list. Did you enjoy the presentation?"

Vance didn't smile. He stopped two feet away from her, his voice a low, venomous rasp meant only for her ears. "You burned your own servers. You destroyed a hundred and fifty million dollars in capital just to sever a data line."

"I demonstrated the unparalleled security architecture of the Apex initiative," Elena corrected smoothly, taking a slow sip of her champagne. "The board is thrilled. Our stock is currently up eighteen percent in after-hours trading. I’d call it a highly profitable investment."

Vance leaned in closer. "Damian gave me the backdoor. I had the cartel ledgers. I was ten seconds away from injecting the phantom debt into your pristine new system. Ten seconds away from a RICO warrant that would have allowed me to seize this entire company."

Elena’s eyes went cold, stripping away the polite veneer. She set her champagne flute on a passing waiter’s tray.

"But you didn't," Elena whispered, her voice like cracking ice. "You failed, Arthur. And more importantly, you failed illegally."

Vance scoffed. "I am a federal prosecutor."

"You were a federal prosecutor executing a cyber-intrusion on a private corporate network," Elena countered, her words sharp and precise. "Tell me, Arthur, did you secure a FISA warrant for that specific hardware injection? Did a federal judge authorize the US Attorney's office to upload fabricated cartel debt into a clean energy grid? Because I know you didn't. You acted on a desperate tip from a disgraced felon, hoping you could legitimize the evidence after the hack was complete."

Vance’s jaw tightened. He knew she was right. If the hardware hack had succeeded, he could have hidden his methods behind the resulting criminal discovery. But because it failed, he was exposed.

"Marcus isolated your IP address before the servers melted," Elena continued, stepping even closer, invading his personal space. "We have the digital footprint of a government device attempting to plant false evidence in Voss Global servers. If I hand that log to the Inspector General tomorrow morning, you won't just be disbarred. You will be indicted for cyber-terrorism and corporate sabotage."

Vance swallowed hard. The towering arrogance that usually defined him had evaporated. He was trapped in a checkmate he hadn't even seen coming. "What do you want, Elena?"

"I want the RICO investigation into Voss Global closed, permanently. Stamped, sealed, and buried in the deepest archive you have," Elena dictated. "I want you to issue a public statement tomorrow praising Voss Global’s cooperation and officially clearing us of any wrongdoing related to Damian Cross’s tenure."

"And if I do?" Vance asked bitterly.

"If you do, I will erase the IP logs. You keep your career. You keep your pension. And," Elena added, a cruel, brilliant smile touching her lips, "I will give you the final nail for Damian's coffin. Because Protocol Icarus didn't just burn the servers, Arthur. It created a feedback loop."

Vance frowned in confusion. "A feedback loop?"

"Before the motherboards melted, Marcus rerouted your incoming data stream," Elena explained, her eyes gleaming with absolute victory. "We took the cartel ledgers you were trying to inject into my company, encrypted them with Damian’s personal biometric signature, and bounced them directly into the hidden offshore accounts he used to pay his legal retainers. You wanted a smoking gun? I just put it in his hand."
