Chapter 17: The Judas Goat

Chapter 17: The Judas Goat

The harsh fluorescent lights of the Metropolitan Correctional Center buzzed with a relentless, maddening hum. Damian Cross paced the length of his narrow cell. His orange jumpsuit clung to his sweating back. For the last four hours, he had been anticipating the heavy clank of the cell door opening.

He had done it. He had given Vance the keys to the kingdom. By now, the FBI should be storming Voss Global headquarters. Elena should be in handcuffs, her pristine white coat stained with the humiliation of a perp walk. And Damian? He would be signing his immunity deal, walking out into the crisp Manhattan air, ready to rebuild from the ashes.

Footsteps echoed down the concrete corridor. They stopped outside his cell.

Damian rushed to the bars, his hands gripping the cold steel. The heavy door swung open, revealing Arthur Vance. The US Attorney was not holding release papers. He was not smiling. He looked exhausted, angry, and utterly defeated.

"Arthur," Damian said, his voice trembling with eager desperation. "Tell me you got her. Tell me it's done."

Vance stepped into the cell. He didn't offer Damian a coffee this time. Instead, he unclasped a thick manila envelope and let its contents spill onto the small metal table bolted to the wall. Dozens of printed banking ledgers and forensic digital analyses fanned out across the surface.

"What is this?" Damian asked, his stomach plummeting as he looked at the documents. He recognized the account numbers. They were his personal, highly encrypted offshore trusts. The ones he had hidden even from Elena.

"This is the end of your life, Damian," Vance said, his voice devoid of any sympathy.

Damian snatched up one of the pages. The ledger showed massive, multi-million-dollar transfers from known cartel shell companies directly into his private trusts. The timestamps were from just two hours ago.

"This is impossible!" Damian shouted, backing away from the table. "I didn't authorize these transfers! My accounts were frozen! This is a setup!"

"Yes, it is," Vance agreed coldly. "When I used your hardware backdoor to inject the shadow data into the Apex servers, Elena didn't just shut us out. She executed a thermal overload. But right before the servers fried, her AI caught the data stream, tagged it with your personal cryptographic signature, and bounced it directly into your private accounts."

Damian couldn't breathe. The walls of the cell seemed to be closing in, crushing the air out of his lungs. "She bounced it back... She made it look like I was actively receiving cartel payouts while sitting in a federal prison?"

"Worse," Vance corrected. "The metadata suggests you initiated the transfers yourself, using a smuggled device, to pay off Julian Croft’s associates. You didn't just give me a backdoor, Damian. You gave Elena the perfect conduit to frame you for the exact crimes you were trying to pin on her."

"You have to tell the judge!" Damian pleaded, grabbing Vance by the lapels of his suit. "You know she manipulated the data! You know she set me up!"

Vance violently shoved Damian backward. The former CEO stumbled and crashed into the metal cot.

"Tell the judge what, Damian?" Vance snarled, adjusting his suit. "That I conducted an illegal cyber-intrusion without a warrant, using stolen hardware codes, and accidentally framed my own star witness? If I admit that, I go to prison with you. Elena knows that. She holds my career in her hands now."

Damian stared at the US Attorney in absolute horror. He was entirely isolated. There were no more moves to make on the board. Elena had taken all of his pieces, flipped the table, and set the room on fire.

"The immunity deal is void," Vance stated, picking up his empty envelope. "My office is formally charging you with sixty-four counts of money laundering, wire fraud, and violating the RICO act. I will personally ask the judge for the maximum sentence. You are never seeing the outside of a cell again."

"Arthur, please!" Damian begged, falling to his knees on the cold concrete floor. The arrogant titan of Wall Street was gone, replaced by a broken, sobbing shell of a man. "She planned this! She planned all of it!"

May you like

"I know," Vance said quietly, looking down at him with a mixture of disgust and pity. "She is a monster, Damian. But she is a monster you created. And now, she is the one holding the leash."

Vance turned and walked out of the cell. The heavy steel door slammed shut with a deafening, absolute finality. The electronic lock engaged with a sharp click. Damian was left alone in the buzzing, fluorescent silence, surrounded by the paper evidence of his own destruction, screaming a name that the world was already learning to worship.
