CHAPTER 2 THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 2 THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

The Whitmore ballroom had never witnessed a moment like this.

A place that had hosted presidents, billionaires, and royalty was now filled with whispers.

Nobody cared about the broken wedding dress anymore.

Nobody cared about the ruined ceremony.

Because everyone was looking at the jade pendant.

The small piece of jewelry resting in Isabella Hart's hand had become more powerful than all the wealth surrounding them.

It had turned a wedding into an investigation.

It had turned a celebration into a nightmare.

And most importantly...

It had turned a stranger into a missing daughter.

Eleanor Whitmore stood completely still.

She looked at Isabella as if she was seeing a ghost.

The young woman in front of her was someone she had spent years trying to destroy.

Someone she believed was trying to take her son away.

Someone she had humiliated in front of hundreds of people.

But now...

She wondered if she had just attacked her own daughter.

The thought made her feel sick.

“Say it again.”

Eleanor's voice was weak.

Isabella looked confused.

“What?”

“The orphanage.”

Isabella held the pendant tightly.

“St. Catherine Children's Home.”

The moment she said the name, Eleanor's knees almost gave out.

Alexander quickly grabbed her arm.

“Mother.”

But Eleanor pushed him away gently.

Her eyes never left Isabella.

“Who told you about this pendant?”

Isabella looked down.

“My adoptive mother.”

“Her name?”

“Margaret Hart.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Margaret Hart.

That name meant something.

A memory buried deep in the past suddenly began returning.

Thirty years earlier...

A young woman named Margaret had worked as a nurse at St. Catherine Children's Home.

She was one of the people who helped care for abandoned children.

But after Lily disappeared...

Margaret vanished from the investigation.

Nobody could find her.

Nobody knew where she went.

Until now.

Alexander stared at Isabella.

His entire world had changed in less than ten minutes.

The woman he loved might not just be his future wife.

She might be his mother's missing daughter.

His sister.

The possibility was impossible.

It was horrifying.

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“This doesn't make sense.”

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at Eleanor.

“Mother, Isabella and I have been together for two years.”

His voice became unsteady.

“You knew everything about her.”

Eleanor looked away.

“I didn't know.”

“You investigated her.”

The accusation hit hard.

Because it was true.

Eleanor had investigated Isabella before allowing the relationship.

She knew where Isabella worked.

Where she lived.

Her childhood records.

Her education.

Everything.

Or so she thought.

“I checked what was available.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“And you missed the fact that she might be your daughter?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had an answer.

Then a voice interrupted the silence.

“Because someone wanted that information hidden.”

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood near the entrance.

Thomas Whitmore.

Eleanor's older brother.

The man who had been silent throughout the entire disaster.

But now...

His expression was serious.

“You knew something?”

Eleanor looked at him.

Thomas slowly walked forward.

“I knew there were things that never made sense.”

The guests moved aside as he approached.

“For thirty years, we searched for Lily.”

He looked at the pendant.

“But every lead disappeared.”

Eleanor's face hardened.

“What are you saying?”

Thomas stared at her.

“I'm saying someone inside this family helped hide the truth.”

The ballroom became silent again.

A cold feeling spread through everyone.

Because the Whitmore family was famous for protecting their image.

But now...

Their greatest enemy might have been inside their own home.

Across the room, the woman who had been watching everything suddenly lowered her head.

Her name was Victoria Langley.

She was Eleanor's closest friend.

For thirty years, she had been part of the Whitmore family circle.

She had attended every celebration.

Every business event.

Every important family gathering.

People trusted her.

They believed she was loyal.

But nobody knew the secret she carried.

The secret that had haunted her every night.

Because Victoria remembered the day Lily disappeared.

She remembered the small crying baby.

She remembered the car waiting outside the orphanage.

She remembered the person who gave her money.

And she remembered the promise she made.

A promise that destroyed an innocent child's life.

Thirty years earlier...

Victoria had been different.

She was younger.

Ambitious.

Desperate to escape poverty.

She wanted everything Eleanor had.

The wealth.

The respect.

The power.

But Eleanor had everything Victoria wanted.

A loving husband.

A beautiful child.

A perfect family.

Victoria hated watching Eleanor's happiness.

Especially because she believed Eleanor did not deserve it.

Then one day...

Someone offered her a chance.

A chance to change everything.

A chance that involved a baby.

A chance that involved a lie.

And Victoria accepted.

Back in the ballroom...

Victoria slowly stepped backward.

She needed to leave.

She needed to disappear before anyone discovered the truth.

But someone noticed.

Isabella.

The young woman holding the jade pendant looked across the room.

Her eyes met Victoria's.

And something strange happened.

Victoria froze.

Because Isabella's eyes looked familiar.

Too familiar.

They were the same eyes as the baby she had taken thirty years ago.

The same innocent eyes.

The same look.

Victoria felt her heart collapse.

“She knows.”

The words escaped her mouth.

A man standing beside her frowned.

“What did you say?”

Victoria immediately looked away.

“Nothing.”

But it was too late.

Someone had heard.

Eleanor suddenly noticed Victoria.

“Victoria.”

The older woman's voice was cold.

Everyone turned.

Victoria forced a smile.

“Yes?”

“How did you know about St. Catherine?”

The question was simple.

But the effect was devastating.

Victoria's expression changed for half a second.

A tiny reaction.

But Eleanor saw it.

Because Eleanor Whitmore had spent her entire life reading people.

And she knew when someone was hiding something.

“Answer me.”

Victoria swallowed.

“I don't understand.”

“You reacted when Isabella mentioned the orphanage.”

“No, I didn't.”

“You did.”

The room became tense.

Alexander looked between them.

“What is happening?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone could feel it.

The truth was getting closer.

Isabella stepped forward.

She looked at Victoria.

“Do you know something about me?”

Victoria stared at her.

For a moment...

It seemed like she wanted to tell the truth.

It seemed like she wanted to apologize.

But fear won.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Isabella noticed.

So did Eleanor.

“Then why are you afraid?”

Victoria's face became pale.

“I am not afraid.”

“Your hands are shaking.”

Victoria looked down.

She immediately hid them.

But the damage was done.

Suddenly...

A loud crash came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

A man had collapsed near the doors.

Security rushed forward.

People screamed.

Alexander moved toward him.

“Who is that?”

Nobody knew.

Until Eleanor saw his face.

Her blood turned cold.

Because she recognized him.

A man she had not seen in thirty years.

A man who was supposed to be dead.

A man connected to the night Lily disappeared.

“Impossible...”

Eleanor whispered.

The man opened his eyes.

His voice was weak.

But everyone heard his first words.

“Eleanor...”

The entire ballroom froze.

“You need to know the truth.”

He coughed.

“Your daughter was never abandoned.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“What are you saying?”

The man's eyes moved toward Isabella.

“She was taken.”

Everyone gasped.

“And the person who ordered it...”

He looked around the room.

His eyes stopped on Victoria.

“Is standing right here.”

Victoria's face became completely white.

The secret she buried for thirty years...

Was finally coming back.

And this time...

May you like

There was nowhere to hide.
