Chapter 14: The Forgotten Daughter

Chapter 14: The Forgotten Daughter

The place where Alexander Cross built his first empire was no longer listed on any corporate map.

It had been abandoned for almost twenty years.

A forgotten industrial complex on the outskirts of Chicago.

Before the glass towers.

Before the billion-dollar investments.

Before Cross Capital became a symbol of power.

This was where everything began.

And where everything had been buried.

Evelyn stood inside the armored SUV staring through the window.

The city lights disappeared behind them.

Jonathan sat beside her.

"I still don't think you should be doing this."

She didn't look away.

"I have spent years running from secrets I didn't even know existed."

"Evelyn—"

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"Richard wants me afraid."

She looked down at the photograph.

"The problem is..."

"I've already survived the worst thing he could do."

Jonathan knew exactly what she meant.

Damian.

The marriage.

The abuse.

The years of silence.

Nothing Richard Vale could say tonight could hurt more than what she had already endured.

Two FBI vehicles followed behind them.

Agent Brooks had refused to let Evelyn go alone.

"You said Richard requested you alone."

Evelyn nodded.

"But I'm not letting you walk into a trap."

Jonathan looked at her.

"You know he'll expect security."

"Yes."

"Then why bring them?"

Evelyn looked out the window.

"Because Richard expects people to act emotionally."

A pause.

"I intend to act intelligently."

The old Cross facility appeared in the distance.

A massive abandoned building surrounded by rusted fences.

The sign above the entrance was almost destroyed.

CROSS INDUSTRIES

The company before Cross Capital.

The beginning.

The SUV stopped.

Security teams moved into position.

Evelyn stepped out.

The cold night air touched her face.

For a moment...

She remembered Alexander.

The first time she entered this place.

The first time he told her:

"An empire isn't built with money."

"It's built with trust."

She had believed him.

Until now.

The entrance door opened before anyone touched it.

A voice echoed from inside.

"Still punctual, Evelyn."

Everyone froze.

Richard Vale stepped into the light.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But exactly as Evelyn remembered.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Agent Brooks immediately raised her weapon.

"Richard Vale."

He smiled.

"Special Agent Brooks."

"You know my name."

"I know everyone's name."

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

"That's why I'm still alive."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"Where are my children?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"Safe."

"If you hurt them—"

He interrupted.

"I won't."

His expression changed.

"Because unlike Damian..."

"I don't destroy what I want to protect."

The words bothered Evelyn.

Because they sounded almost sincere.

"You sent the messages."

"Yes."

"You entered the hospital."

"Yes."

"You threatened my children."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I warned you."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"There's a difference."

"Exactly."

He looked around the abandoned factory.

"Damian hurt you because he wanted control."

"I hurt people because I wanted truth."

A bitter smile appeared.

"The difference matters."

Jonathan stepped forward.

"Enough games."

"What do you want?"

Richard looked at him.

"Finally."

"The lawyer asks the important question."

He turned back to Evelyn.

"I want you to know what Alexander hid."

Richard walked deeper into the building.

They followed.

Inside was not abandoned.

Hidden behind the old factory walls was a private archive.

Computers.

Documents.

Photographs.

Files.

A secret office.

Jonathan stopped.

"How long has this been here?"

"Twenty years."

Richard answered.

"Alexander built this place after he realized someone was trying to destroy him."

Evelyn looked around.

"Who?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He opened a drawer.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

He placed one on the table.

A family photograph.

Alexander.

His wife.

Young Damian.

And another child.

A little girl.

Evelyn froze.

The same girl from the photograph.

She picked it up slowly.

"Who is she?"

Richard looked directly at her.

"Her name was Amelia Cross."

Silence.

Jonathan frowned.

"Cross?"

Richard nodded.

"Alexander's daughter."

Everyone stared.

"Daughter?"

Jonathan whispered.

"But Damian was his only child."

Richard smiled sadly.

"That's what everyone was told."

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

"Why didn't anyone know?"

"Because Alexander erased her existence."

Her expression hardened.

"Why?"

Richard's face changed.

For the first time...

The confidence disappeared.

"Because he believed he was protecting her."

"From who?"

Richard looked at Evelyn.

"From the same person who destroyed your life."

A screen behind them suddenly turned on.

A video began playing.

Alexander Cross appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting in the same office.

Evelyn immediately recognized his voice.

"If this recording is being viewed..."

"Then Richard has decided the truth must finally come out."

Her heart stopped.

Alexander continued.

"For twenty years, I carried a secret that destroyed my family."

"I had a daughter before Damian."

"Her name was Amelia."

"She was brilliant."

"Kind."

"Everything I hoped my children would become."

The video paused.

Then:

"But someone inside my company discovered her existence."

"Someone who wanted control of everything I built."

The screen displayed a photograph.

A younger man.

Evelyn recognized him immediately.

Her face changed.

"No..."

Jonathan looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered the name.

"The person who raised Damian..."

"The person who taught him..."

Her voice shook.

"It was him."

Richard looked at them.

"Now you understand."

Agent Brooks stared at the photograph.

"Who is he?"

Richard answered quietly:

"Damian's real mentor."

"Alexander's greatest mistake."

"The man who turned my company into a weapon."

Evelyn stepped closer to the screen.

"Who?"

Richard pressed play.

Alexander spoke again.

"His name was Victor Kane."

The room went silent.

"And he was the reason my daughter disappeared."

Evelyn's phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone turned.

A message appeared.

Unknown sender.

But this time...

The name was visible.

Victor Kane

The message contained only one sentence.

You finally found the truth.

A second message appeared.

Now come find Amelia.

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

Because beneath the message...

Was a location.

And a photograph.

A woman.

Older now.

Alive.

The same woman from the twenty-year-old picture.

Jonathan whispered:

"Amelia..."

Evelyn stared at the screen.

The woman Alexander had hidden.

The daughter everyone believed never existed.

The person who could explain everything.

Richard stepped closer.

His voice became quiet.

"Your war with Damian was never the beginning."

"It was the consequence."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Then what is the beginning?"

Richard stared into the darkness beyond the factory.

May you like

"The night Victor Kane decided..."

"...that the Cross family belonged to him."
