Chapter 2: The Party Stops

Chapter 2: The Party Stops

The envelope slipped from Damian Cross's hand.

It landed silently on the polished marble floor.

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

The only sound was the distant laughter drifting up from the grand ballroom below, where Chicago's wealthiest investors continued celebrating the future of Cross Capital—completely unaware that the man hosting them had just lost everything.

The company's Chief Legal Officer, Jonathan Pierce, adjusted his glasses before speaking.

"Mr. Cross, under Article Twelve of the Emergency Governance Charter, your authority as Chief Executive Officer has been suspended effective immediately."

Damian's jaw clenched.

"You work for me."

Jonathan didn't flinch.

"I work for Cross Capital."

A beat of silence.

"And as of eight minutes ago, Cross Capital is under the executive control of Mrs. Evelyn Grace Cross."

Damian's face darkened.

"This is a coup."

"No."

Jonathan's voice remained calm.

"It's corporate governance."

Damian took a threatening step forward.

"I'll have your license."

"I'm afraid you no longer possess that authority."

Before Damian could answer, another vibration echoed from his phone.

Then another.

And another.

Within seconds, it buzzed continuously.

His executive group chat had exploded.

Martin Reeves (CFO):
SEC has requested financial records.

Head of Compliance:
Federal auditors have entered the headquarters.

Director of Operations:
Every executive access card connected to your profile has been disabled.

Private Banker:
Please contact us immediately regarding changes to your personal credit facilities.

Damian stared at the messages.

One by one...

His privileges were disappearing.

Across the room, Celeste Monroe's confident smile had vanished.

"What does this mean?" she whispered.

Damian ignored her.

She grabbed his arm.

"Damian!"

He spun toward her.

"Be quiet!"

His roar echoed through the bedroom.

For the first time that evening, fear flickered across Celeste's face.

She had expected another argument.

Another opportunity to humiliate Evelyn.

She had never imagined watching Damian lose control.

Evelyn leaned against the edge of the bed.

Every breath hurt.

The pain in her abdomen had become sharper.

More frequent.

But she refused to let anyone see it.

Not yet.

Jonathan noticed the faint tremor in her hands.

"Mrs. Cross?"

She gave him an almost invisible nod.

"I'm all right."

He knew she wasn't.

He had reviewed the medical reports that afternoon after receiving the emergency authorization package.

High-risk twin pregnancy.

Placenta complications.

Strict bed rest.

Yet she had still found the strength to execute the largest corporate takeover in the company's history.

Jonathan felt a surge of respect.

Downstairs...

The master of ceremonies tapped his microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen!"

The music faded.

Conversations quieted.

"We'd like to invite our host, Mr. Damian Cross, to say a few words about Cross Capital's exciting future!"

Applause erupted.

More than two hundred guests turned toward the sweeping staircase.

They waited.

Thirty seconds passed.

No Damian.

The applause slowly faded into confused murmurs.

One investor laughed.

"Maybe he's proposing to his wife again."

Another joked, "Probably closing another billion-dollar deal upstairs."

No one knew how close they were to the truth.

Upstairs...

Corporate Security Director Marcus Hale glanced at his watch.

"Mr. Cross."

"You have twenty-four minutes remaining to surrender all company property."

Damian glared at him.

"You think you're throwing me out of my own home?"

Marcus answered evenly.

"This penthouse is registered as a corporate executive residence."

Damian frowned.

"What?"

Jonathan opened another folder.

"It was purchased through Cross Capital Holdings."

Damian snatched the document.

His eyes scanned the first page.

Then the second.

Then the signature page.

His own signature stared back at him.

Buried beneath dozens of acquisition agreements years earlier was a clause he had never bothered to read.

The executive residence belonged to the company.

Not to him.

His breathing became uneven.

"No..."

Jonathan continued.

"Under the emergency governance provisions, the current Executive Chair has sole authority regarding occupancy."

Damian slowly turned toward Evelyn.

"You planned this."

She met his eyes.

"I prepared for the day you'd finally reveal who you truly were."

Suddenly...

A sharp cramp ripped through Evelyn's abdomen.

She gripped the bedpost.

Her vision blurred for an instant.

Jonathan immediately stepped forward.

"Mrs. Cross?"

She inhaled slowly.

"I'm fine."

She wasn't.

A warm ache spread across her lower back.

Her maternal-fetal specialist's warning echoed in her mind.

If contractions become regular...

Call immediately.

She discreetly checked the time.

She refused to panic.

Not until she knew for certain.

The babies came first.

Always.

Damian noticed her brief wince.

Instead of concern...

He smiled.

"There it is."

"The performance."

He folded his arms.

"You're pretending again."

Celeste regained some of her confidence.

"I told you."

"She's manipulating everyone."

Evelyn looked at them with quiet pity.

For years, those words had broken her.

Tonight...

They meant nothing.

The private elevator chimed again.

Its doors slid open.

A woman in a navy pantsuit stepped inside carrying a leather portfolio.

Silver hair.

Sharp posture.

Piercing gray eyes.

Jonathan immediately straightened.

"Chairwoman Ashcroft."

Linda Ashcroft entered the room with effortless authority.

She looked first at Evelyn.

Then at Damian.

Finally, she spoke.

"Mrs. Cross."

"I'm sorry we arrived too late."

Evelyn offered a tired smile.

"You arrived exactly when I needed you."

Linda nodded before facing Damian.

"The Board has concluded its emergency session."

Damian crossed his arms.

"I don't recognize this meeting."

"You don't have to."

Linda opened the portfolio.

"The vote was unanimous."

"Twelve in favor."

"Zero opposed."

"Your employment contract has been terminated for cause."

Silence.

Even Celeste stopped breathing.

Downstairs...

One of the investors checked his phone.

His smile faded.

"That's strange."

"What?"

"My stock alert."

Others reached for their phones.

Within seconds...

More notifications appeared.

The ballroom erupted.

"What?"

"Is this real?"

"Impossible!"

Camera flashes exploded as financial journalists rushed toward the elevators.

Guests abandoned their champagne.

Conversations dissolved into chaos.

Within moments, the celebration had transformed into a media frenzy.

Upstairs...

Damian heard the commotion below.

He walked to the bedroom balcony overlooking the ballroom.

Reporters were already entering the penthouse.

Television cameras.

Photographers.

Financial correspondents.

The news had spread faster than he imagined.

His perfect night...

His carefully orchestrated celebration...

Had become the public stage for his downfall.

For the first time in years...

Damian Cross looked afraid.

Behind him, Evelyn rested one protective hand over her stomach.

Another sharp pain tightened across her abdomen.

This one lasted longer.

Much longer.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Not now...

Please...

Just give me a little more time.

Then, without warning...

A warm trickle ran down her leg.

Her heart stopped.

She looked down.

A single crimson drop fell onto the white marble floor.

Then another.

And another.

Jonathan saw it first.

His face turned white.

"Mrs. Cross..."

The room froze.

Evelyn slowly lifted her eyes to meet his.

In a voice barely above a whisper, she said the words every mother fears.

May you like

"I think..."

"...the babies are coming."
