Chapter 16: The Secret Written in Blood

Chapter 16: The Secret Written in Blood

The photograph fell onto the cold concrete floor.

For several seconds...

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was trying to understand the impossible.

The words written on the back.

HER NAME IS EVELYN.

Jonathan was the first to react.

He picked up the photograph.

His eyes moved between the image and Evelyn.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"This can't be right."

Evelyn stared at Victor Kane.

Her face had lost all color.

"What are you saying?"

Victor smiled.

"Exactly what you think."

"No."

Her answer came immediately.

"I am not Amelia's daughter."

Victor tilted his head.

"You always were."

Agent Brooks stepped between them.

"Enough."

She looked at Victor.

"You've made a lot of claims."

"Now prove them."

Victor laughed softly.

"Of course."

He reached inside his coat.

Every security officer raised their weapons.

But Victor calmly removed a small black envelope.

"Alexander kept everything."

He tossed it toward Evelyn.

"Even the truth about you."

Evelyn caught the envelope.

Her hands were shaking.

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Birth records.

Medical reports.

A handwritten letter.

And one photograph.

The photograph showed a baby.

Wrapped in a white blanket.

A handwritten note underneath:

Evelyn Grace Cross

Born:

March 14, 1991

Mother:

Amelia Grace Cross

Father:

Unknown

Evelyn stopped breathing.

"No..."

Her entire life flashed through her mind.

The orphanage.

The adoption papers.

The unanswered questions.

The feeling that something had always been missing.

"I was adopted."

Her voice was barely audible.

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

"Alexander found you after Amelia disappeared."

"He protected you."

"Raised you from a distance."

"Made sure you had every opportunity."

Jonathan looked shocked.

"Why didn't he tell her?"

Victor's expression became cold.

"Because telling you the truth would have put you in danger."

Evelyn looked up.

"From who?"

Victor smiled.

"Me."

The factory became silent.

Twenty-five years earlier...

Amelia Cross discovered Victor Kane's plan.

He wasn't trying to help Alexander build an empire.

He was trying to take it.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Patiently.

He created debt.

Manipulated investments.

Controlled executives.

By the time Alexander realized what was happening...

Victor had already built a shadow empire inside Cross Capital.

"Amelia found proof."

Richard explained.

"She discovered Victor had been stealing from the company for years."

Evelyn looked at him.

"And then?"

Richard looked down.

"She disappeared."

Victor interrupted.

"Careful, Richard."

"You make it sound so dramatic."

Everyone turned.

Victor's calm expression remained.

"I didn't make Amelia disappear."

"I gave her a choice."

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

"What choice?"

Victor looked directly at her.

"Leave everything behind."

"Or watch everyone she loved suffer."

The anger inside Evelyn finally broke through.

"You threatened her."

Victor shrugged.

"I protected myself."

"You destroyed her life."

"No."

He corrected.

"I protected an empire."

Agent Brooks stepped forward.

"You expect us to believe you did all this for business?"

Victor looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"I did it because Alexander Cross chose the wrong heir."

Everyone became still.

Victor looked at Evelyn.

"He should have chosen Damian."

"He should have chosen the son who wanted power."

"But instead..."

His eyes narrowed.

"He chose a woman who cared about people."

"Someone who could actually lead."

Evelyn understood.

This wasn't only about money.

Victor hated Alexander's choice.

Because Alexander had chosen someone Victor couldn't control.

Suddenly...

Damian appeared on the secure video connection.

Everyone looked at the screen.

His face was pale.

But his voice was steady.

"Victor."

The room froze.

Victor smiled.

"Damian."

"You knew."

Damian's jaw tightened.

"You knew everything."

"Not everything."

Victor smiled.

"But enough."

Damian looked at Evelyn.

For the first time...

There was no jealousy.

No anger.

Only regret.

"All these years..."

He swallowed.

"You were the person my father trusted."

Evelyn said nothing.

"And I hated you for it."

A pause.

"When I should have been protecting you."

Evelyn looked away.

Because forgiveness was complicated.

Especially when the wounds were still fresh.

Victor stepped closer.

"Do you know the most interesting part?"

Nobody answered.

"Alexander never intended Damian to inherit Cross Capital permanently."

He looked at Evelyn.

"The succession plan was temporary."

"What?"

Evelyn frowned.

Victor smiled.

"The final ownership transfer required one thing."

"What?"

"Your acceptance."

Richard's face changed.

"No."

Victor looked at him.

"Yes."

He turned toward Evelyn.

"The company was never supposed to belong to Damian."

"It was never supposed to belong to Alexander's son."

"It belonged to Amelia's bloodline."

Evelyn stared.

"So I was the rightful heir."

Victor nodded.

"Exactly."

Then every screen in the factory turned on.

A live broadcast appeared.

News channels.

Social media.

Financial networks.

Everyone was watching.

The headline appeared:

BREAKING: SECRET HEIR OF CROSS EMPIRE REVEALED

Jonathan looked horrified.

"How did this get out?"

Victor smiled.

"Because the world deserves the truth."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You leaked it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Victor stepped closer.

"Because now everyone knows who you are."

A pause.

"And everyone who wants control of Cross Capital knows exactly who to destroy."

Suddenly...

Gunshots echoed outside the building.

Everyone froze.

Security teams moved.

Agent Brooks shouted:

"Everyone down!"

The windows shattered.

Chaos exploded.

Richard grabbed Evelyn's arm.

"Move!"

They rushed toward the hidden archive room.

Jonathan followed.

Damian's voice came through the video.

"Evelyn!"

She looked at the screen.

For the first time...

Damian sounded afraid.

"Don't trust anyone."

The connection cut.

Inside the archive room...

Evelyn pressed against the wall.

"Who is attacking us?"

Richard looked through the security camera.

His face changed.

"No."

"What?"

Richard whispered:

"It's impossible."

Evelyn looked at the monitor.

A group of armed men entered the building.

Leading them...

Was someone she never expected.

A woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Alive.

Richard stepped back.

"Amelia."

Evelyn froze.

Her entire world stopped.

The woman she had spent her entire life unknowingly searching for...

Was standing ten meters away.

Her biological mother.

Amelia Cross looked directly into the camera.

Her eyes filled with emotion.

Then she spoke:

"Evelyn."

A pause.

"My daughter."

For twenty-five years...

Evelyn had believed she had no family.

No past.

No connection.

But the truth had finally arrived.

And it was standing on the other side of the door.

Amelia whispered:

"I am sorry it took me so long to find you."

Then the door lock began to break.

And Evelyn realized something terrifying.

May you like

The woman she had been waiting her entire life to meet...

Might have been the person who started the war.
