Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Closed Doors

Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Closed Doors

The message was delivered to Damian Cross within fifteen minutes.

Evelyn Cross has agreed to meet.

But only under one condition.

No lawyers.

No negotiations.

No cameras.

No excuses.

Only the truth.

For the first time in his life, Damian Cross was being forced into a situation where he couldn't control the room.

And it terrified him.

The meeting took place three days later.

A private conference room inside Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The same hospital where Evelyn had nearly lost her life.

The same place where Damian had never once asked if she was awake.

The same place where his children had entered the world without him.

Damian stood outside the door.

His expensive suit was replaced with a simple dark jacket.

No designer watch.

No luxury accessories.

No symbol of wealth.

Because for the first time...

Those symbols meant nothing.

A security officer opened the door.

"Five minutes."

Damian looked confused.

"Five minutes?"

Evelyn's attorney, Jonathan Pierce, standing nearby, answered.

"That's all she wants."

Damian entered.

Evelyn sat near the window.

She looked different.

Not weaker.

Different.

Her hair was pulled back.

Her face was pale.

A small medical monitor tracked her condition.

But her eyes...

Her eyes were the same.

Calm.

Focused.

Unbreakable.

Damian stopped several feet away.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The woman sitting before him was the same woman he had dragged across the floor.

The same woman he had humiliated.

The same woman he believed would never leave.

Yet somehow...

She looked more powerful than she ever had.

"How are the babies?"

It was the first thing Damian said.

Evelyn stared at him.

Not angry.

Just disappointed.

"They're alive."

A pause.

"They're fighting."

Damian swallowed.

"I want to see them."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

His expression changed.

"I'm their father."

Evelyn looked at him.

"A father protects his children."

Silence.

"A father doesn't hurt their mother."

Damian looked away.

"I made mistakes."

Evelyn almost laughed.

Almost.

But she didn't.

"No."

"You made choices."

His eyes lifted.

"What's the difference?"

"The difference is mistakes happen accidentally."

She held his gaze.

"What you did happened repeatedly."

The room became silent.

Damian sat down.

For once...

He looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"I loved you."

Evelyn's expression didn't change.

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you enjoy hurting me?"

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Because he had no answer.

"I never meant—"

"You did."

Her voice remained quiet.

"You watched me fall."

"You laughed."

"You told me to get up."

"You cared more about your investors seeing a perfect wife than whether your children survived."

Damian closed his eyes.

The memories returned.

Every cruel moment.

Every time she cried.

Every time she stayed silent.

"I thought you were trying to destroy me."

Evelyn looked confused.

"What?"

"I thought everyone wanted something from me."

He laughed bitterly.

"My father."

"The Board."

"Investors."

"Even you."

"So I controlled everything."

He looked down.

"Because if I controlled everything..."

"...nobody could hurt me."

Evelyn remained silent.

Then she said something he never expected.

"Your father was right about you."

Damian looked up sharply.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"About what?"

"About the fact that you confused fear with respect."

The words landed deeply.

Evelyn reached for a folder beside her.

She placed it on the table.

"What is this?"

"Your chance."

Damian frowned.

"I don't understand."

"Open it."

Inside were documents.

Not legal charges.

Not accusations.

A treatment program.

Corporate accountability agreement.

Financial restitution plan.

Damian stared.

"You're helping me?"

"No."

She corrected him.

"I'm protecting my children."

He looked confused.

"If you go to prison tomorrow, my children grow up with a father they only know from headlines."

"And if you avoid responsibility..."

She paused.

"They grow up knowing their father hurt their mother and never admitted it."

Damian looked at the documents.

"You want me to confess."

"I want you to tell the truth."

"Publicly?"

"Yes."

His face tightened.

"That would destroy me."

Evelyn looked toward the window.

"You destroyed yourself."

A pause.

"I'm only asking you to stop pretending."

For the first time...

Damian saw something clearly.

Evelyn wasn't trying to punish him.

She wasn't seeking revenge.

She had every reason to.

But she wasn't.

She was trying to end the cycle.

Something he had never been strong enough to do.

The door opened.

Jonathan entered quietly.

"Sorry to interrupt."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What happened?"

Jonathan's expression was serious.

"The FBI finished reviewing the evidence from the phone."

Damian immediately looked up.

"What did they find?"

Jonathan hesitated.

Then placed a tablet on the table.

"They found the original recordings."

Damian frowned.

"What original recordings?"

"The ones you thought were deleted."

The screen showed a timeline.

Security footage.

Audio files.

Private messages.

Then one file appeared.

MASTER BEDROOM AUDIO — THREE MONTHS EARLIER

Damian's face changed.

Because he recognized the date.

The night he threatened Evelyn after she questioned several company transfers.

The recording began.

His own voice filled the room.

"You think you can leave me?"

"Nobody will believe you."

"Without me, you're nothing."

Evelyn listened silently.

Damian looked away.

The worst part wasn't hearing himself.

It was seeing Evelyn's face while hearing it.

The woman he had convinced himself was weak...

Had been silently surviving.

Jonathan stopped the recording.

"The FBI also discovered something else."

"What?"

"A hidden account."

Damian frowned.

"I don't have hidden accounts."

Jonathan looked directly at him.

"Not yours."

The room went quiet.

"Evelyn's."

Damian looked confused.

"Why would she hide money?"

Jonathan answered:

"She wasn't hiding money."

"She was preparing protection."

"For whom?"

Jonathan looked toward the NICU window.

"Your children."

Damian sat completely still.

Then...

His eyes lowered.

A tear almost appeared.

Almost.

But he wiped it away before anyone could see.

Because even now...

He still didn't know how to be vulnerable.

Outside the hospital...

Reporters waited.

They expected a scandal.

A war.

A billionaire fighting to save himself.

But when Damian finally walked out...

Something was different.

He stopped before the cameras.

For years, he had used interviews to control his image.

Tonight...

He had nothing left to protect.

A reporter raised a microphone.

"Mr. Cross, do you deny the allegations?"

The entire world waited.

Damian looked at the cameras.

Then at the hospital behind him.

Then quietly said:

"No."

The crowd went silent.

"I don't deny them."

Another reporter gasped.

"Are you admitting responsibility?"

Damian swallowed.

"Yes."

Flashbulbs exploded.

Millions watched.

The most powerful businessman in Chicago had just done something impossible.

He admitted the truth.

But before anyone could react...

A police vehicle arrived.

An officer stepped out holding documents.

"Damian Alexander Cross?"

He turned.

"Yes."

The officer read the charges.

"You're under arrest for financial fraud, assault, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."

The cameras captured everything.

The handcuffs.

The silence.

The fall of a billionaire.

As Damian was taken away...

His phone vibrated one final time.

A message from an unknown number.

He looked down.

Only one sentence appeared.

You think this is over?

Damian stopped walking.

Because beneath the message...

Was a name.

A name he hadn't seen in years.

A name that changed everything.

May you like

Alexander Cross.

His dead father's name.
