Chapter 13: The Truth About Leah’s Identity

Chapter 13: The Truth About Leah’s Identity

Leah turned slowly toward her mother.

“What does he mean?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Leah’s expression changed.

“You knew.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I wanted to protect you.”

“From what?”

Her mother remained silent.

Leah’s voice became stronger.

“No more.”

The room shook with the weight of years of secrets.

“No more protecting me with lies.”

Evelyn finally sat down.

“You deserve the truth.”

Ethan stood nearby.

Listening.

“Your father and I couldn’t have children naturally,” Evelyn said.

Leah froze.

“What?”

“We tried for years.”

Her mother looked at her.

“Then we adopted you.”

Silence.

The words felt impossible.

Leah stepped back.

“No.”

“You were only six months old.”

“No.”

“You were abandoned.”

Leah shook her head.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were our daughter.”

Tears filled Evelyn’s eyes.

“Not by blood.”

“But by love.”

Leah looked away.

Her entire identity felt like it was breaking apart.

Then Ethan spoke quietly.

“But that’s not the whole story.”

Leah turned.

“What else?”

Ethan opened another file.

“The adoption records were sealed.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor Hale arranged it.”

The room went silent.

Leah stared.

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he care about me?”

Ethan looked at the documents.

“Because your biological parents were connected to him.”

Leah’s heart started racing.

“Who were they?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Daniel and Sarah Hale.”

The name hit her like a storm.

“Hale?”

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Victor Hale is your biological uncle.”

Leah couldn’t move.

The man destroying her family…

Was part of her family.

The person controlling the Whitmores…

Was connected to her blood.

Everything was suddenly more complicated.

Victor wasn’t trying to steal her inheritance.

He was trying to erase the last person who could expose him.

Leah looked at the files.

“My entire life…”

She whispered.

“Was built around his secret.”

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Leah.”

Ryan.

She almost hung up.

But something in his voice stopped her.

He sounded different.

Not arrogant.

Not cruel.

Afraid.

“Listen to me,” Ryan whispered.

“Victor knows you found out.”

Leah stayed silent.

“He’s coming for you.”

“Why should I believe you?”

A pause.

Then Ryan said the one thing she never expected.

“Because he’s going to kill me next.”

The call ended.

Leah looked at Ethan.

For the first time, they all understood.

The war had changed.

Ryan was no longer the biggest threat.

The real enemy had finally stepped out of the shadows.

And he wanted Leah Carter gone forever.
