Chapter 8: The Person Leah Never Suspected

Chapter 8: The Person Leah Never Suspected

Leah watched the final seconds of the video again.

And again.

She kept hoping she had misunderstood.

That the voice she heard belonged to someone else.

But she knew the truth.

It was Ryan.

A younger Ryan.

A teenager standing beside Robert Whitmore while her father’s life was being destroyed.

The man she married had known about her family long before they met.

He had studied her.

Followed her.

Chosen her.

The realization hurt more than the betrayal itself.

Because every memory suddenly felt fake.

Their first date.

Their first kiss.

The night Ryan proposed.

All of it.

Was it ever real?

Ethan watched his sister carefully.

“Leah.”

She didn’t respond.

“Say something.”

She finally looked at him.

“How long have you known?”

Ethan hesitated.

“That Ryan was involved?”

“Yes.”

“Not long.”

Leah laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone knew something except me.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is.”

She picked up the drive.

“For years, everyone decided what I could handle. Everyone protected me by lying to me.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

Because he knew she was right.

Before they could continue, the lights inside the old Carter estate suddenly went out.

Darkness covered the room.

Leah immediately became alert.

“Did you tell anyone we were here?”

“No.”

A sound came from downstairs.

A door opening.

Ethan moved in front of Leah.

“Stay behind me.”

Footsteps slowly approached.

Then a voice echoed through the hallway.

“You always were dramatic, Ethan.”

Leah froze.

She recognized that voice.

Not Ryan.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

The lights suddenly turned back on.

Standing at the entrance was a woman holding a folder.

Leah’s heart dropped.

“Mom?”

The woman stared at her.

For years, Leah believed her mother had died in the same accident that took her father.

But the woman standing in front of her was alive.

Older.

Changed.

But unmistakable.

Evelyn Carter.

Leah couldn’t breathe.

“You’re alive.”

Her mother looked at her with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Leah stepped backward.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“No, this isn’t possible.”

Ethan looked away.

Because he already knew.

“You knew,” Leah whispered.

Her brother didn’t answer.

“You knew she was alive.”

Silence.

That silence destroyed whatever trust remained.

Leah looked between them.

“My entire life has been a lie.”

Evelyn moved closer.

“I did it to protect you.”

Leah’s expression hardened.

“Everyone says that.”

Her mother looked down.

“Robert Whitmore was more dangerous than you know.”

“Then why leave me?”

“Because if he believed you were alone, he would stop looking.”

Leah stared.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And one name repeated again and again.

Ryan Whitmore.

“He wasn’t sent to steal your money.”

Leah frowned.

“Then why?”

May you like

Her mother looked directly at her.

“Ryan was sent to destroy your bloodline.”
