Chapter 1: The Homecoming Nobody Expected

Chapter 1: The Homecoming Nobody Expected

Grant Carlisle’s eyes moved from me to Lily.

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Three seconds was enough for me to see everything.

The fear.

The calculation.

The realization that the woman standing in his living room was not the exhausted wife he thought he had abandoned.

I was different.

The mission had changed me.

Eight weeks undercover had stripped away every illusion I had about trust, loyalty, and survival.

But nothing—not even a dangerous federal operation—could have prepared me for seeing my daughter treated like an enemy inside her own home.

"Baby," Grant repeated, reaching toward Vanessa. "What happened?"

Not Lily.

Not the five-year-old child with bruised arms in my embrace.

Vanessa.

My grip tightened around my daughter.

"Interesting choice," I said quietly.

Grant stopped.

His expression shifted.

"Evelyn..."

"No." My voice was calm. Too calm. "Don't say my name like you're happy to see me."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Grant, this is ridiculous. She just walked in and started accusing me."

I looked at her.

Then at the robe hanging from her shoulders.

My robe.

The one Grant bought me after Lily was born.

The one he said smelled like home.

"You wore my clothes."

Vanessa smiled.

"I live here now."

The words landed harder than a slap.

Lily buried her face into my shoulder.

I felt her shaking.

My daughter wasn't crying anymore.

That scared me more.

Children cried when they believed someone would save them.

Lily had stopped because she had learned nobody was coming.

Until now.

I carried her toward the hallway.

"Where are you going?" Grant demanded.

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned around.

"To check every inch of my house."

His eyebrows lowered.

"Your house?"

I stared at him.

"Yes."

A small smile appeared on my face.

"You forgot something, Grant."

He said nothing.

"This house isn't yours."

The color drained slightly from his face.

Vanessa laughed.

"Oh, please."

She looked at Grant.

"She doesn't know."

That sentence caught my attention.

"What exactly don't I know?"

Vanessa walked closer.

"Grant told me everything. About your little government job. About your disappearing for weeks. About how this family was falling apart because of you."

She stepped closer.

"He told me you were never really a wife."

My expression didn't change.

"But you made one mistake."

Vanessa tilted her head.

"And what's that?"

I looked directly into her eyes.

"You believed everything Grant told you."

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

I turned away.

"Lily, sweetheart?"

My daughter whispered.

"Mommy?"

"I'm here."

"Are you staying this time?"

The question broke something inside me.

I kissed her hair.

"Yes."

May you like

Then I looked back at my husband.

"And I'm staying long enough to find out exactly what happened while I was gone."
