Chapter 11: The Price of Betrayal

Chapter 11: The Price of Betrayal
The next morning, Grant Carlisle woke up to a world that no longer belonged to him.
His bank accounts were frozen.
His access to company systems was revoked.
His name was removed from executive records.
For years, he had built an image of himself as a powerful businessman.
A man who controlled everything.
But power built on lies disappears quickly.
I watched the news report from my office.
"Carlisle Holdings executive Grant Carlisle is facing an internal investigation following allegations of financial misconduct and corporate fraud."
The reporter continued.
"Sources indicate the company may have been controlled through unauthorized manipulation of ownership structures."
I turned off the television.
Daniel placed another file in front of me.
"There is more."
I looked at him.
"How much more?"
"Enough to destroy him."
I opened the file.
Inside were messages between Grant and Vanessa.
At first, they were romantic.
Promises.
Plans.
Dreams.
Then they changed.
The messages became colder.
"Once Evelyn signs, we move everything."
"What about Lily?"
"She'll adjust."
My hands tightened.
I closed the file.
"No."
Daniel looked at me.
"What?"
"This isn't just about money anymore."
I stood.
"I want custody protection immediately."
He nodded.
"Already prepared."
Later that afternoon, I visited Vanessa.
Not because I needed answers.
Because I wanted to see the person who helped destroy my daughter's childhood.
She was sitting alone in a small apartment.
No designer clothes.
No luxury furniture.
No powerful man beside her.
Just Vanessa.
The woman underneath the illusion.
When she saw me, she laughed bitterly.
"You came to enjoy this?"
"No."
I sat across from her.
"I came to understand."
She looked away.
"Understand what?"
"How someone could hurt a child."
Her face changed.
For the first time, guilt appeared.
"I didn't mean for it to go that far."
My expression hardened.
"But it did."
She whispered:
"Grant said Lily was difficult."
My hands curled.
"She was five years old."
"I know."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don't."
I stood.
"You saw a child as an obstacle."
Vanessa looked down.
Then quietly said:
"I thought he loved me."
I looked at her.
"He didn't love you."
A tear appeared in her eyes.
"He loved what you could give him."
The same way he loved what I could give him.
Money.
Status.
Protection.
But never me.
As I walked away, Vanessa called my name.
"Evelyn."
I stopped.
"There is something you need to know."
I turned.
She swallowed.
"Grant was afraid of someone."
My eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
May you like
She whispered:
"Your mother."
