Chapter 10: The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face

Chapter 10: The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face
The room stayed silent long after the video ended.
Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak.
Because sometimes the truth was not shocking because it was unexpected.
It was shocking because a part of you had always known.
I stared at the screen.
My mother's face was frozen there.
A woman who had taught me to stand tall.
A woman who had told me my entire life:
"Family protects family."
But now I knew.
She only meant family protects family when she was the one holding the power.
My father walked closer.
"Evelyn."
I didn't answer.
My eyes stayed on the screen.
"How long?"
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Agent Sloan looked at the files.
"The earliest communication we found was eight months ago."
Eight months.
Before my mission.
Before Vanessa moved into my house.
Before Lily stopped speaking.
Everything had been planned.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like an operation.
Except the target wasn't a criminal.
It was me.
"Why?" I finally asked.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody understood either.
My mother had everything.
Money.
Influence.
Respect.
Why would she destroy her own daughter?
Then Alexander spoke quietly.
"Because you became impossible to control."
Everyone looked at him.
He lowered his eyes.
"Mom always believed she created everything we had."
My father's expression darkened.
"Watch your words."
But Alexander continued.
"She couldn't accept that Evelyn built something bigger than hers."
I remembered every conversation.
Every small comment.
"You're too busy."
"You don't need to work so hard."
"A woman should know when to step aside."
I thought they were opinions.
They were warnings.
My mother wasn't angry that I left.
She was angry that I returned stronger.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone became alert.
I answered.
"Hello?"
Her voice came immediately.
My mother's.
"I know you found the files."
I closed my eyes.
"Did you expect me not to?"
A small sigh.
"You always were stubborn."
I looked at the evidence.
"No. I was always underestimated."
Silence.
Then she said:
"You think this makes you powerful?"
"No."
I looked at Lily sleeping upstairs.
"It makes me free."
Her voice became colder.
"You don't understand what you're fighting."
"Then explain it."
Another pause.
Then:
"Your husband was never the mastermind."
My stomach tightened.
"Neither was Vanessa."
She continued:
"They were tools."
The call ended.
I lowered the phone.
Agent Sloan looked at me.
"What did she say?"
I looked around the room.
"The people who hurt me..."
May you like
I took a breath.
"They were never the real enemy."
