Chapter 3: The Woman Who Owned Everything

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Owned Everything
Grant stared at the folder.
Vanessa appeared behind him.
"What is that?"
Neither of us answered.
She stepped forward.
"Grant?"
He ignored her.
That worried her.
Because Vanessa was used to being the center of attention.
She didn't understand silence.
She didn't understand consequences.
I picked up Lily and walked downstairs.
Grant followed.
"You can't just accuse me."
"I haven't accused you of anything."
"Then what is this?"
"Evidence."
The word changed the room.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Evidence of what?"
I placed my phone on the table.
A recording began playing.
Grant's own voice filled the room.
"Once Evelyn signs the transfer papers, everything will finally be mine."
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Grant went completely still.
Another recording.
"She thinks she's important because of her government position. She doesn't realize the company was never really hers."
I watched his face.
Confusion.
Fear.
Then panic.
"Where did you get this?"
I smiled.
"That doesn't matter."
Actually, it did.
But he didn't need to know yet.
Because the truth was much bigger.
Grant thought he married a federal agent.
A woman who disappeared for missions.
A woman who was always tired.
A woman who put everyone else first.
He never understood the woman behind the badge.
Before I became Evelyn Carlisle...
I was Evelyn Hart.
The founder.
The majority owner.
The person who built the Carlisle Foundation before Grant ever entered my life.
The company everyone believed belonged to him?
It belonged to me.
The house?
Mine.
The accounts?
Mine.
The reputation he used to impress Vanessa?
Built from my work.
Vanessa stared at me.
"You?"
I looked at her.
"Yes."
Her voice dropped.
"Who are you?"
I smiled.
"The woman you replaced."
I paused.
"And the woman who can take everything back."
Outside, several black SUVs pulled into the driveway.
Grant looked toward the window.
His face lost all color.
Because he recognized the people stepping out.
Federal investigators.
My attorney.
And the one person Grant feared most.
The chairman of Carlisle Holdings.
My father.
The man everyone thought had retired.
The man who had been waiting for my signal.
I held Lily closer.
May you like
"Welcome home, Grant."
"Your nightmare just arrived."
