Chapter 13 - The Wrong Car

Claire called Evan before she called the police.
He answered on the first ring.
"Claire?"
"Where are you?"
"In a car with Noah."
Her heart slammed against her ribs.
"What car?"
"Black SUV."
"Who sent it?"
There was a pause.
"I assumed you did."
Claire closed her eyes.
"I didn't."
Evan's voice changed instantly.
"Understood."
Her brother had never worked in corporate security, but he had spent eight years as an emergency-room nurse before moving into hospital administration.
Panic did not make him louder.
It made him precise.
"Noah is next to me."
"Can he hear me?"
"No."
"Do not alarm him."
"I won't."
"Where are you?"
Evan looked outside.
"Park Avenue, moving south."
"Where were you supposed to go?"
"His school."
Claire's blood went cold.
"Why?"
"Noah said he left his reading journal there, and Maya told me you might need to check something at the school later."
Claire looked at Adrian.
He was already calling security.
"Who told the driver the destination?"
"He already knew it."
Claire gripped the phone.
"Evan, ask the driver who booked the car."
She heard her brother lean forward.
"Hey, who arranged this pickup?"
The driver's answer came faintly.
"Vale Family Office, sir."
Claire felt rage rise so quickly it nearly made her dizzy.
"Tell him to pull over at the next police precinct."
Evan repeated the instruction.
The driver hesitated.
"Sir, I have an address."
Evan's voice hardened.
"You have a new one."
The car continued moving.
Claire switched to speaker.
"Driver, this is Claire Hart, Noah's mother."
Silence.
"Pull over now."
The driver finally answered.
"Ma'am, I was told there was a custody authorization."
"There is no authorization."
"The booking notes say Mr. Daniel Vale approved transport."
Claire looked across the conference room.
Adrian's assistant was already dialing Daniel.
"What destination is in the booking?"
The driver hesitated again.
"A private residence in Greenwich."
Claire's stomach dropped.
Victoria owned a house in Greenwich.
"Pull over."
"Ma'am—"
"Now."
Evan spoke calmly from the back seat.
"Do it."
The SUV slowed.
Claire heard a turn signal.
Then Evan said, "We're stopping."
She finally inhaled.
Two NYPD officers reached the vehicle six minutes later.
Noah never understood how close the situation came to becoming something else.
Evan told him the driver had the wrong destination.
That was true enough.
Claire arrived twenty minutes later.
Noah ran into her arms on the sidewalk outside the precinct.
"Uncle Evan said the car got mixed up."
Claire held him against her.
"It did."
"Are we still going to school?"
She pulled back and looked at him.
"Do you want to?"
"My journal's there."
Claire nearly laughed from relief.
The world could collapse around children and they would still remember homework.
"We'll get it."
Daniel arrived while officers were interviewing the driver.
He came through the precinct doors looking frantic.
"Where's Noah?"
Claire moved between him and her son without thinking.
Daniel stopped.
The reflex hurt both of them.
"I didn't book that car," he said.
"Your authorization was on it."
"I didn't do it."
"Then someone used your credentials again."
He ran a hand through his hair.
"Mom has access to the family office system."
Claire stared at him.
"You keep giving her access to things and then acting surprised when she uses it."
His face tightened.
"I'm not defending her."
"You did for years."
"I know."
The answer disarmed her for a second.
Daniel looked toward Noah.
"Can I talk to him?"
Claire shook her head.
"Not here."
"I'm his father."
"And there is a court order."
"Supervised contact is allowed."
"Then arrange it through Maya."
Daniel's eyes filled with frustration.
"Claire, I am trying to help."
"Then start by telling the truth before I already know it."
He lowered his voice.
"What do you want to know?"
Claire thought of Page Thirty-One.
"Who brought the waiver to my hospital room?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"I did."
"Who drafted it?"
"Vale Legal."
"Who told you to get my signature while I was medicated?"
"Mom said it had to be signed that day."
"Did you know what it was?"
His silence answered.
Claire's voice broke despite her effort.
"Did you know?"
"Yes."
Noah was too far away to hear.
Claire was grateful for that.
"Why?"
Daniel's face crumpled.
"Because I thought your father was going to cut me out of the company."
Claire stared at him.
There it was.
Not pressure.
Not confusion.
Not ignorance.
Ambition.
"So you chose my hospital bed."
"I told myself you would sign it anyway."
"I was on pain medication."
"I know."
"You watched me sign it."
"Yes."
Claire stepped back.
Something inside her became quieter than anger.
"Thank you."
Daniel looked confused.
"For what?"
"For finally giving me one truth before I found the document."
She turned away.
"Claire."
She stopped without facing him.
"There's something else."
She closed her eyes.
"Of course there is."
Daniel approached but kept distance between them.
"The school property."
Claire turned.
"What about it?"
"Your father used an old service level beneath the original building."
Her pulse quickened.
"How do you know?"
"I went there once with him."
"When?"
"Before we were married."
"Why have you never mentioned it?"
Daniel gave a hollow laugh.
"Because I forgot until you asked about lanterns years later."
"When did I ask?"
"After your father died."
Claire did not remember.
Daniel continued.
"You found one of Noah's birthday cards and asked me whether Edward ever used the word lantern around the company."
Claire felt sick.
"What did you tell me?"
"No."
"Was that true?"
"No."
She stared at him.
"What is under the school?"
Daniel looked toward the officers.
"An archive room with a separate street entrance through the old foundation annex."
Claire's mind raced.
"Does Victoria know?"
Daniel swallowed.
"She does now."
"How?"
"Because I told her five months ago."
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel spoke quickly.
"I didn't know what was inside."
"You never do."
"Claire, listen to me."
"Why did you tell her?"
"She was looking for the Lantern Account."
"And you helped her."
"I gave her the location."
Claire looked at Noah across the room.
The birthday card had been stolen from his bedroom because it contained the clue.
Victoria had known about the clue for months.
So why steal the card now?
The answer came immediately.
Because somebody else needed the original wording.
Claire pulled out her phone and opened the photograph of the returned card.
The envelope had been delivered after Box 417 was opened.
Whoever sent it knew Claire had reached the next step.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
DON'T GO THROUGH THE FRONT ENTRANCE.
Claire typed back.
RAYMOND?
The response came seconds later.
NOT THIS TIME.
