Chapter 5 - The Second Letter

Celia refused coffee, water, or a chair.
She stood beside Adrian's desk with both hands gripping the strap of her purse.
Claire recognized the posture of someone who had rehearsed bravery in an elevator and was afraid it would expire if she sat down.
"Tell me about the letter," Claire said.
Celia looked at Noah before answering.
"Edward gave it to a records attorney named Henry Moss six months before he died."
Adrian's head lifted.
"Moss handled the old Meridian land trusts."
"Yes."
"He retired to Vermont."
Celia shook her head.
"He died last year."
Claire felt another door close before she had even reached it.
"Then how did Victoria get the letter?"
Celia opened her purse and removed a printed email chain.
"Moss's office sent notice to the registered recipients after his death."
Adrian took the pages.
"Who were the recipients?"
"Edward named Claire, you, and the Hart Family Foundation."
Claire frowned.
"I never received anything."
"Neither did I," Adrian said.
Celia pointed to the second page.
"Because the contact records were changed seven weeks before Moss died."
Adrian read silently.
His face hardened.
"The replacement contact for all three recipients is Vale Legal Services."
Claire looked through the glass at Daniel.
"Who authorized the change?"
Celia answered carefully.
"A digital signature using Daniel's credentials."
The room went quiet.
Claire had reached the stage of betrayal where each new fact no longer surprised her.
That frightened her.
She did not want treachery to become ordinary.
"Did Daniel know?"
"I don't know."
"That's not good enough."
Celia flinched.
Claire softened her voice.
"I'm sorry."
Celia nodded once.
"Victoria sometimes used his electronic signing token."
Adrian looked up sharply.
"He allowed that?"
"Everyone at headquarters allowed things around Victoria."
The statement was not a defense.
It was an indictment of an entire culture.
Claire turned toward the dark windows.
"What was in the letter?"
Celia swallowed.
"I only saw the first page."
"What did it say?"
"Edward wrote that if the Hart Covenant was ever challenged, Claire was to assume that someone inside Vale had discovered the reserve structure."
Adrian leaned forward.
"Reserve structure?"
Celia nodded.
"He called it the Lantern Account."
Claire had never heard the phrase.
Adrian had.
She saw it immediately.
"What is it?"
He stood slowly.
"Not an account in the ordinary sense."
"Then what?"
"A network of contingency ownership rights."
Claire stared at him.
"In English."
"Your father was afraid Vale Capital would someday use debt to take control of the operating company."
"They did."
"Not completely."
Adrian pulled a legal pad toward him and drew three boxes.
"The warehouses belong to separate property entities."
"I know."
"The terminals have their own licensing companies."
"Yes."
"The software, customs bonds, and regional permits are held elsewhere."
Claire began to understand.
"He separated the pieces."
"Exactly."
Adrian drew a line around all three boxes.
"The public company controls day-to-day use, but Edward retained emergency rights through dormant Hart trusts."
"The Lantern Account."
"Probably the administrative key to those rights."
Celia looked frightened.
"Victoria said it was worth more than the company."
Claire gave a humorless laugh.
"Control is always worth more than paper value to Victoria."
Celia reached into her purse again.
"There's something else."
She produced a photograph taken from across a conference room.
Victoria stood beside Dr. Samuel Brenner.
Between them sat a black archive box.
The date stamp was fourteen months earlier.
Claire's skin prickled.
"Where was this taken?"
"Twenty-third floor conference room C."
"What was in the box?"
"Your father's medical files and old corporate records."
Adrian cursed quietly.
"Those records should have been sealed."
Celia nodded.
"Victoria had them brought from Ironstone Archive."
Claire remembered Ironstone.
Edward stored decades of paper files there because he distrusted total digitization.
He used to say that paper could burn but it could not be silently edited from another country.
"Why was Brenner there?"
"Victoria asked him to identify anything in Edward's medical records that could support an incapacity challenge."
Claire stared at her.
"Against a dead man?"
"Against decisions he made before he died."
Adrian understood first.
"They wanted to invalidate the covenant."
Celia nodded.
"And the second letter."
Claire's phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
STOP TRUSTING THE PERSON WHO BROUGHT YOU THE DRIVE.
Claire looked at Celia.
The assistant noticed the change in her face.
"What?"
Claire did not answer.
Another message arrived.
ASK HER WHO PAID HER $250,000 LAST MONTH.
Claire turned the screen toward Adrian.
His expression became unreadable.
Celia backed away.
"I can explain."
Claire's voice stayed calm.
"Then explain."
"Victoria paid me."
"For what?"
"A separation agreement."
"You still work for her."
"Technically."
"Then why pay you to leave?"
Celia looked at Noah again.
"Because I saw the letter."
"That makes no sense."
"It does if the money wasn't a reward."
Adrian finished the thought.
"It was silence."
Celia nodded.
"The agreement says I repay triple if I disclose confidential information."
Claire studied her.
"So why risk it?"
Celia's hands finally stopped shaking.
"Because Victoria told me yesterday that people who cannot control their children do not deserve to keep them."
Claire felt her jaw tighten.
Celia continued.
"My daughter is eleven."
"Victoria threatened her?"
"Not directly."
"She never does."
Celia's eyes met Claire's.
"Exactly."
Adrian picked up the flash drive with a tissue and placed it inside an evidence envelope.
"We'll make a forensic copy before opening anything."
Celia nodded.
"There's one file you need first."
"Which one?"
"A scanned invoice from Raven North."
Claire leaned forward.
"What's on it?"
"A beneficiary code."
"Whose?"
Celia looked toward Daniel through the glass.
"N.V. Seven."
Claire frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Celia whispered the answer.
"Noah Vale, age seven."
