Chapter 14 - Under the School

The Hart Academy occupied a red-brick building on the Upper West Side that looked older than most of the surrounding block.

Edward had donated the land through the Hart Family Foundation twelve years earlier.

The public story was simple.

A warehouse parcel had been converted into a private scholarship school with a large public-service program.

The hidden story began beneath the boiler room.

Claire arrived after classes with Adrian, Evan, and a court-approved security team.

Noah remained at the townhouse with Maya.

Claire refused to bring him anywhere near another mystery connected to adults who used his name as a financial instrument.

Daniel waited across the street.

The court order did not prohibit Claire from speaking with him, but Adrian strongly recommended that every conversation be recorded through counsel.

Claire agreed.

She did not trust herself to separate memory from manipulation anymore.

The school director, Naomi Brooks, met them at a side entrance.

She was a compact woman in her sixties who had known Edward for decades.

When Claire mentioned the foundation annex, Naomi did not look surprised.

"Your father told me somebody would ask eventually."

Claire stared at her.

"When?"

"The year before he died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Naomi sighed.

"Because he specifically told me not to unless you came asking about lanterns."

Claire almost laughed.

Her father had built a scavenger hunt out of corporate survival.

"I'm asking."

Naomi led them through a locked maintenance corridor and down two concrete staircases.

The air became cooler with each level.

At the bottom was an old steel door painted the same gray as the wall.

A brass plate beside it contained no words.

Only a lantern symbol.

Claire stared at it.

"Subtle."

Adrian said, "Your father never claimed to be subtle."

Naomi entered a six-digit code.

The panel flashed red.

"That's new."

Claire's body tightened.

"New how?"

"The old system was mechanical."

Security examined the door.

A modern access controller had been mounted inside the wall recently.

Someone had upgraded the lock.

"When was the last time you came down here?" Adrian asked.

"Two months ago."

"Was this here?"

"No."

Claire looked at Daniel through the live video call Adrian had opened.

"Did Victoria send anyone here?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not that I know."

Claire almost ended the call.

Then Daniel added quickly, "But Raven North hired a facilities contractor."

"Name?"

"Mercer Protective Systems."

Grant Mercer.

The same man photographed at Claire's townhouse lock.

Adrian contacted the operational monitor and obtained emergency authority to access the foundation-controlled room.

A locksmith bypassed the electronic controller without damaging the original door.

It took twenty-six minutes.

Claire spent all twenty-six imagining the room empty.

When the door opened, warm yellow light came on automatically.

Rows of compact archive shelves filled the space.

At the center stood a metal table.

On it sat a single lantern.

Not decorative.

A battered camping lantern Claire remembered from childhood.

Edward used it during summer trips in Maine.

Claire walked toward it.

A white envelope had been taped beneath the handle.

Her name was written on the front.

This time it really was addressed to her.

She opened it.

Claire,

If you found this room, somebody made you work much harder than I hoped.

Start with Cabinet C.

Do not start with the money.

She looked around.

Cabinet C stood against the rear wall.

Inside were original property deeds, port licenses, software assignments, union agreements, environmental permits, and master service contracts.

All the things that allowed Vale-Hart Global to function.

Adrian examined the first folder.

"These are originals."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning several digital versions filed after Edward died may not match."

Priya joined through a secured tablet feed and began comparing documents.

Within thirty minutes, she found seven discrepancies.

A Newark property assignment had an added clause giving Vale Strategic Holdings purchase rights.

A Boston permit transfer contained an altered renewal condition.

Two software licenses listed a different controlling entity.

Three documents carried Edward's digital signature after dates when his token should have been disabled.

Claire felt anger burn through exhaustion.

"They rewrote the company around his grave."

Adrian nodded.

"Piece by piece."

Evan opened a lower drawer.

"What's this?"

He lifted a sealed binder labeled WORKFORCE RESERVE.

Claire opened it.

The binder documented a protected fund established by Edward to cover twelve months of payroll if control of the company became disputed.

The reserve was enormous.

Nearly six hundred million dollars.

Claire understood immediately why Edward told her not to start with the money.

The fund was not treasure.

It was time.

Time to fight without making twelve thousand employees pay for a family war.

"This is why Section Nine protects payroll," she said.

Adrian nodded.

"And why Victoria couldn't starve the company into surrender overnight."

A security specialist called from the entrance.

"We found another device."

Mounted behind the new electronic controller was a network module.

It had been recording every access attempt and sending data somewhere outside the school.

Priya traced the endpoint.

Raven North Management.

Claire stared at the small black box.

"They were waiting for someone to open the room."

"Looks that way," Priya said.

A new data burst appeared on her screen.

"And somebody just connected remotely."

Adrian looked toward the door.

"Can you block them?"

"I can isolate the controller."

"Do it."

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

Emergency lamps came on in dim red strips along the floor.

Evan swore.

Claire's phone lost signal.

The steel door slammed shut behind them.

Naomi tried the handle.

Locked.

One of the security specialists pressed the emergency release.

Nothing happened.

Adrian looked at Claire.

"This isn't a power failure."

Priya's voice crackled through the tablet before the connection died.

"Someone issued a remote lockdown."

Claire stared at the red-lit door.

The room was underground.

There was no cell signal.

No windows.

And the person controlling the lock knew exactly who was inside.

Then the old camping lantern on the table clicked on by itself.

A small recorded speaker beneath it played Edward Hart's voice.

"If the electronic lock traps you, stop trusting the electronic lock."

Evan stared at the lantern.

"Your dad was unbelievable."

Claire almost smiled.

Edward's recording continued.

"Pull the red handle under the north shelf."

They found the mechanical release in twelve seconds.

The door opened.

Claire stepped into the corridor and immediately called Priya.

"Who triggered it?"

Priya answered after a pause.

"Credential says Vale Facilities."

"Whose credential?"

"Martin Keene."
