Chapter 8 - The Man Between Them

Priya identified the third man in the photograph before sunrise.
His name was Raymond North.
The discovery was so simple that Claire almost rejected it.
Raven North was not an invented corporate phrase.
It was a name disguised by one changed vowel.
Raymond North had been Edward Hart's first chief financial officer.
He joined Hart Meridian in 1998 and disappeared from public corporate records in 2007.
There was no retirement announcement.
No obituary.
No LinkedIn profile.
No current address attached to any ordinary database.
"People don't disappear that cleanly by accident," Priya said over video.
Claire sat at her kitchen island while police continued processing the townhouse.
"Can you find him?"
"Maybe."
"That's not your usual cheerful answer."
"His Social Security activity stops in 2008."
"Dead?"
"Possibly."
Adrian poured stale coffee into a mug.
"Or living outside the country."
Priya nodded.
"There's a Raymond N. Hartwell who began receiving consulting income in Switzerland in 2009."
Claire looked at the screen.
"Hartwell?"
"Could be coincidence."
Adrian gave Claire a warning look before she could make the obvious joke.
Priya continued.
"The more interesting part is the payer."
"Who?"
"Raven North Management."
Claire leaned back.
"He pays himself through a company named after himself."
"If it's him."
"It's him."
Adrian sighed.
"We prove things before declaring them."
Claire looked at him.
"You must be exhausting at birthdays."
For the first time all night, he smiled.
The moment lasted three seconds.
Then Priya opened another document.
"Raymond North and Victoria Vale were both signatories on an old financing agreement from 2006."
Claire moved closer.
The agreement covered emergency credit for three Hart Meridian terminals.
Edward's signature appeared on the final page.
So did Raymond's.
Victoria signed for Vale Capital.
"This is before the formal merger," Claire said.
"Six years before," Adrian confirmed.
Priya highlighted a paragraph.
"Look at the collateral language."
Claire read it.
If Hart Meridian defaulted on the emergency credit, Vale Capital could claim controlling security interests in the terminals.
"Did we default?"
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
Priya changed screens.
"According to the public records, no."
"According to private records?"
Priya displayed a spreadsheet recovered from Celia's drive.
In 2007, three payments from Hart Meridian had been routed to an account with one digit altered.
The funds were returned five days later.
During those five days, the lender marked Hart Meridian technically delinquent.
Vale Capital filed temporary security claims.
Edward challenged them.
The claims were eventually withdrawn.
"Someone manufactured a default," Claire said.
Adrian's face was grim.
"That's what it looks like."
"Raymond?"
"He controlled treasury at the time."
"And Victoria benefited."
Priya added, "Then Raymond disappeared."
Claire looked at the old photograph again.
Edward stood between the two people who may have tried to take his company twenty years earlier.
He was smiling because the photograph was taken before he knew.
Or perhaps because he already knew and was pretending not to.
Claire understood that kind of smile now.
"Find Raymond," she said.
Priya nodded.
"I'm trying."
Claire's regular phone began vibrating.
Thirty-two missed calls.
Seventeen messages from reporters.
Six from board members.
Four from friends she had not heard from in years.
One from her younger brother, Evan, who lived in Seattle and had no role in the company.
CALL ME BEFORE YOU BELIEVE ANYTHING ONLINE.
Claire opened a news alert.
The headline made her stomach drop.
VALE- HART HEIRESS IN PENTHOUSE MELTDOWN AS COMPANY FACILITIES HALT.
The article included a twelve-second video.
Claire pressed play.
It began with Victoria standing on the terrace.
Claire was already on her feet.
There was no footage of the security men blocking the door.
No footage of Noah crying.
No footage of Victoria saying he would be kept from Claire.
The clip showed Claire taking the champagne flute.
It showed her throwing the drink.
It showed her shoving Victoria.
Then it ended.
"Of course," Claire whispered.
Adrian watched over her shoulder.
"Selective edit."
"From the penthouse camera."
"Likely."
"Victoria controls the system."
"Yes."
Claire scrolled.
A second outlet had the same clip.
A third had a statement from an unnamed Vale family representative claiming Claire suffered an emotional crisis after learning the board had concerns about her judgment.
The article mentioned a temporary custody petition.
Claire gripped the phone.
"She leaked the family court filing."
"Or someone on her side did."
"Same thing."
Adrian's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and looked at Claire.
"The emergency family court hearing was moved up."
"To when?"
"Nine this morning."
Claire checked the clock.
5:46 a.m.
"Wonderful."
"There's more."
"There is always more."
"Vale's lawyers filed a business emergency petition too."
"What do they want?"
"An injunction suspending Section Nine and restoring executive access."
"When?"
"Eleven."
Claire looked down at her torn gown.
Her cheek was swollen.
Her house was an active crime scene.
Her son was asleep in a penthouse controlled by the woman trying to take him.
Her husband had helped prepare a secret trust in Noah's name.
Forty-eight million dollars had vanished offshore.
And in three hours, Claire would have to convince a judge she was the stable parent.
A text arrived from Daniel.
PLEASE LET ME BRING NOAH HOME TO YOU.
Claire stared at it.
Then another message appeared from the unknown number.
DO NOT LET DANIEL DRIVE YOUR SON ANYWHERE.
Claire typed back for the first time.
WHO ARE YOU?
The reply came instantly.
SOMEONE WHO WATCHED YOUR FATHER MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE.
Claire's pulse accelerated.
WHERE IS RAYMOND NORTH?
Three dots appeared.
Then vanished.
Then appeared again.
The answer finally arrived.
HE'S IN NEW YORK.
A second message followed.
AND HE WAS AT THE PENTHOUSE TONIGHT.
