Chapter 15 - Newark Goes Dark

Martin Keene denied touching the school access system.
He denied knowing Grant Mercer.
He denied having any current relationship with Raven North.
Claire believed none of it.
At 6:18 p.m., while Adrian prepared an emergency subpoena for Martin's devices, Newark Terminal Four lost executive network access.
At 6:19, its gate-management system failed.
At 6:21, inbound trucks began stacking along the perimeter road.
At 6:24, the refrigerated cargo monitoring dashboard stopped updating.
The terminal itself still had power.
This was not an outage.
Someone had turned off the systems that told people where everything was supposed to go.
Priya called Claire from the school basement.
"The failure matches a remote administrative command."
"From Martin?"
"Credential chain goes through his office."
"Can you reverse it?"
"Not remotely."
"Why?"
"Because the local recovery key is held in the terminal control room."
Claire was already moving.
"I'm going to Newark."
Adrian objected.
"No."
"The operational monitor needs an authorized Hart beneficiary to approve emergency recovery if the executive credentials are disputed."
"Send a delegate."
"I'm the delegate Edward built the structure around."
"That's exactly why you shouldn't walk into a site while someone is actively sabotaging access."
Claire stopped.
"Twelve thousand people are watching whether I protect the company or hide behind a lawyer."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"This is not about optics."
"I know."
She held his gaze.
"It's about the work."
He hated the argument because it was Edward's.
Forty-three minutes later, Claire entered Newark Terminal Four wearing a hard hat over her pulled-back hair and a reflective jacket over the same navy court suit.
The glamorous penthouse of the night before felt like another life.
Here everything was concrete, diesel noise, bright industrial lighting, and people who wanted systems to work more than they cared which family name sat on the letterhead.
Operations director Luis Alvarez met her at the control building.
"We can run manually for maybe two hours."
"What's at risk first?"
"Refrigerated medical cargo."
"Move it manually."
"Already doing it."
"Food shipments?"
"Second priority."
"Passenger anything?"
"Not our operation."
Claire nodded.
"Good."
Luis studied her bruised face for half a second and then went back to work.
She appreciated that more than sympathy.
Inside the control room, technicians had three recovery screens open.
The emergency key required two approvals.
One from the operational monitor.
One from the Hart beneficiary.
Claire entered hers.
The system rejected it.
Priya's voice came through speakerphone.
"Try again."
Claire did.
ACCESS REVOKED.
"Someone changed the beneficiary certificate," Priya said.
"Can they do that?"
"Not legally."
"That's not what I asked."
"Technically, if they had the Lantern root key."
Claire thought of the school controller.
"Did they get it from the archive?"
"No."
"Then where?"
Priya was silent for several seconds.
"There are two root keys."
Claire looked at Luis.
"Who holds the second?"
"Checking."
Adrian called on another line.
"Claire, Martin's attorney just contacted us."
"What does he want?"
"Immunity."
"From whom?"
"Everyone."
Claire almost laughed.
"Tell him to get in line."
"He says he knows who has the second root key."
Claire looked at the dead gate-management map.
Dozens of trucks were waiting outside.
"Put him on."
Martin's voice sounded smaller than it had at dinner.
"Claire."
"You have thirty seconds."
"Victoria has the second key."
"How?"
"Edward gave it to the board chair for dual control."
"You were board chair after he died."
"Yes."
"So you gave it to her."
Silence.
Claire closed her eyes.
"Martin."
"Yes."
"When?"
"Two years ago."
"Why?"
"She knew about a payment."
"What payment?"
"Mine."
There it was.
The price.
"How much?"
"Seven hundred thousand dollars."
"From Raven North?"
"Yes."
"For what?"
"I approved a licensing amendment after Edward died."
"A forged amendment."
Martin began to protest.
Claire cut him off.
"You knew the original didn't contain it."
He said nothing.
"That's what I thought."
Martin's breathing was audible.
"I made one mistake."
Claire looked at the dark dashboard.
"You made a mistake every day you kept it secret."
"Victoria threatened to expose me."
"So you gave her the root key."
"Yes."
"And tonight she used your credentials to lock the school room and the terminal."
"I think so."
"Think harder."
"Yes."
Adrian interrupted.
"Martin, can the key be revoked?"
"Only with the original board recovery certificate."
Claire knew exactly where it was.
Cabinet C beneath the school.
Priya had already scanned the archive.
"We have it," Claire said.
Priya spoke quickly.
"Send me the certificate number."
Claire opened the scanned file on her phone.
She read the number aloud.
Priya entered it.
The recovery system refreshed.
A new authorization screen appeared.
Claire's beneficiary credential returned.
She entered the code again.
Luis entered the monitor key.
The gate map flickered.
One section turned active.
Then another.
Refrigerated cargo monitoring returned.
The truck queue began moving within four minutes.
Nobody cheered.
Claire loved them for that.
Professionals did not celebrate systems doing what systems were supposed to do.
They simply continued the work.
At 8:02 p.m., the terminal was stable.
Claire stood outside the control room with a paper cup of terrible coffee.
Luis joined her.
"My people were expecting layoffs by morning."
Claire looked at him.
"Why?"
"The news says you're dismantling Vale-Hart."
"I'm not."
"I figured."
"Why?"
Luis nodded toward the control room.
"People who want to dismantle a place don't spend two hours fixing gate software."
Claire smiled for the first time all day.
Then Priya called.
"We found something in the terminal server logs."
"What?"
"Before the shutdown, somebody copied twelve years of customs, licensing, and vendor records to a Raven North server."
Claire's smile disappeared.
"How much data?"
"Almost everything."
"Why?"
"I don't know yet."
"Who initiated it?"
Priya hesitated.
"Martin's credential started the process."
Claire closed her eyes.
"He said Victoria had his key."
"Maybe."
"You don't believe him."
"I believe the next part matters more."
"Which is?"
"The copy destination wasn't the Cayman server."
"Where did it go?"
Priya's voice became careful.
"A server registered to Hart Meridian Recovery LLC."
Claire had never heard of it.
Adrian had.
She could tell from his silence on the conference line.
"Adrian?"
He answered reluctantly.
"That was an entity Edward created."
"Who controls it now?"
Adrian paused.
"You do."
