Chapter 12 - The Trust That Never Existed

Margaret spread every surviving Reedwell document across her conference table.

Daniel stood at the window.

Vanessa sat under security supervision.

Eric worked at a separate laptop.

No one trusted anyone.

It was the most honest arrangement they had managed so far.

Margaret finally spoke.

“If Eric is right, we have a major problem.”

Daniel turned.

“Define major.”

“The trust controlling millions in property may never have been legally created.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Emily received distributions.”

“Money moving does not prove the trust was valid.”

Daniel stared at the documents.

“Then what was everyone fighting over?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Control of assets they believed existed inside a legal structure.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“So people lied, stole, threatened, and destroyed a family over paperwork nobody verified.”

Eric did not look up.

“That sounds more common than you’d like to believe.”

Daniel’s gaze hardened.

“Careful.”

Eric nodded.

Fair.

The bank account from the locket produced a breakthrough.

The account had belonged to Caroline Hale.

Withdrawals continued for eight months after her supposed death.

Then one final transfer emptied it.

Destination.

Beacon Children’s Foundation.

Daniel frowned.

“A charity?”

Margaret searched.

“Closed fifteen years ago.”

Eric looked closer.

“The foundation owned a building.”

“Where?”

He gave the address.

Daniel recognized it.

The office building that had replaced the Beacon Diner.

Everything kept returning there.

They drove back.

The building manager allowed them access to archived property records.

Beacon Children’s Foundation had purchased the diner building two weeks before Caroline disappeared.

Its director had been Michael Reed.

Daniel stared at the signature.

“Michael hid Caroline.”

Vanessa whispered.

“Why?”

They found the answer in a sealed basement cabinet.

Not money.

Letters.

Dozens.

Caroline had written them.

One was addressed to Judith.

Another to Emily.

Another to Michael.

Margaret read the first lines.

“I did not die.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel continued reading silently.

Caroline had discovered that Judith’s husband was using family assets to cover gambling and business debts.

When Caroline threatened to expose him, he threatened Emily.

Michael helped Caroline disappear temporarily while authorities investigated.

But Caroline later became ill.

She died eight months after leaving home.

The family publicly kept the original death date to conceal the investigation.

Daniel lowered the letter.

“So the secrecy had a reason.”

Margaret nodded.

“At first.”

Vanessa read the next page.

Then her face changed.

“What?”

Daniel asked.

She handed it to him.

Caroline wrote that Reedwell Trust was deliberately designed to appear inconsistent.

Multiple copies existed.

Only one was authentic.

Its identifying mark was a handwritten sentence on the final page.

Daniel read aloud.

“A family is safest when love cannot be purchased.”

Margaret searched their copies.

None contained the sentence.

Eric sat back.

“So we have never seen the original.”

Vanessa whispered.

“Emily had it.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Sophie.”

Everyone looked at him.

Emily had made Sophie the beneficiary.

Emily had hidden clues in Sophie’s childhood memories.

The red book.

The bracelets.

The blue house.

Daniel understood.

“She hid the trust where Sophie would consider it ordinary.”

Vanessa looked confused.

“Where?”

Daniel thought of every object in Sophie’s life.

Stuffed animals.

Books.

Photographs.

Drawings.

Then he remembered the giant teddy bear.

Not the new one.

An older one.

Emily had given Sophie a small white bear the day she came home from the hospital.

Sophie had slept with it every night until Vanessa arrived.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“What happened to Sophie’s white bear?”

Vanessa froze.

“I…”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is it?”

“She stopped using it.”

“That was not my question.”

Vanessa’s face fell.

“My mother took it.”

Daniel stared.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“Why?”

“She said Emily had hidden something inside.”

Daniel’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“You let her take it?”

“I didn’t know what she wanted.”

“You keep saying that as if ignorance makes your choices smaller.”

Vanessa had no answer.

Eric looked up from his computer.

“I found Judith.”

Daniel turned.

“How?”

“Credit card.”

“Where?”

Eric hesitated.

“The airport.”

Daniel’s heart sank.

“She’s leaving?”

“She bought a one-way ticket.”

“Destination?”

“Zurich.”

Margaret stared.

“The bank account.”

Daniel was already calling security.

Then Sophie called from the guesthouse.

Daniel answered immediately.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

“Daddy.”

Her voice sounded confused.

“What’s wrong?”

“Grandma lady came back.”

Daniel’s blood froze.

“What?”

“She gave me my white bear.”

Daniel shouted for security.

“Sophie, where is she now?”

“She left.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Do not touch the bear.”

A pause.

“But Daddy…”

“What?”

Sophie’s voice became small.

“It has something inside.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

May you like

“What?”

“Mommy’s voice.”
