Chapter 14 - Locked Inside

The alarm was fake.
No smoke.
No heat.
No fire.
Just noise and locked doors.
Thomas regained partial control of the security system within minutes.
Daniel moved Sophie into the reinforced safe room with Rosa.
“You stay here.”
Sophie grabbed his hand.
“Are you coming back?”
Daniel crouched.
“Every time.”
She searched his face.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
He closed the safe-room door.
Then he stopped.
Promises mattered.
Especially now.
Vanessa stood in the hallway.
“She knows the system because I gave her access months ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Of course you did.”
“I thought she was helping me investigate Eric.”
Eric laughed without humor.
“She spent years turning us against each other.”
Margaret held the trust inside a fireproof case.
“What does Judith actually want?”
Vanessa answered.
“To destroy the part proving my inheritance exists.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because she borrowed against it.”
Eric looked at the accounting pages.
“If the trust becomes enforceable, those transactions become discoverable.”
Margaret nodded.
“Potentially criminal.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“So your mother manipulated you into chasing Sophie’s inheritance because she was hiding theft from yours.”
Vanessa’s face showed devastation.
“Yes.”
A voice came from the staircase.
“Very dramatic.”
Judith.
Everyone turned.
She stood on the upper landing.
No weapon.
No dramatic disguise.
Just a sixty-two-year-old woman in a brown coat.
Security surrounded her.
Judith raised her hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
Daniel’s eyes burned.
“You broke into a house with a four-year-old inside.”
“I used a service entrance.”
“That is not the defense you think it is.”
Judith looked at Vanessa.
“You weren’t supposed to find the second schedule.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You lied to me my whole life.”
“I protected you.”
“From millions of dollars?”
“From your grandmother.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She protected me better than you did.”
Judith’s face hardened.
“She made us compete.”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You did.”
Daniel watched mother and daughter.
For years, Vanessa had built her identity around betrayal that never happened.
Judith had fed it.
Judith looked at Daniel.
“You think Emily was innocent?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I think Emily tried to protect my daughter.”
“She protected Sophie because guilt was eating her alive.”
“Guilt over what?”
Judith smiled faintly.
“The original Hart money.”
Daniel stared.
Judith continued.
“Your first investment.”
Daniel remembered.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
An anonymous angel investor had backed his first development project.
Emily claimed she did not know the source.
He had built Hart Development from there.
“You funded it.”
Judith shook her head.
“Emily did.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“With Reedwell money.”
“Yes.”
Margaret interjected.
“That could have been legal.”
“It wasn’t.”
Judith’s eyes stayed on Daniel.
“She took money from Vanessa’s schedule before Vanessa knew it existed.”
Vanessa went still.
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that true?”
Margaret searched the original document.
Eric examined old transfers.
Finally, Eric nodded.
“Twenty-five thousand.”
Vanessa laughed once.
“All this because of twenty-five thousand?”
Judith snapped.
“It was theft.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You stole millions.”
“That came later.”
The casual admission stunned everyone.
Vanessa stared at her mother.
“You destroyed our family because Emily borrowed twenty-five thousand dollars?”
“She proved the principle.”
“What principle?”
“That people take what you let them.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Something inside her finally saw Judith clearly.
Daniel did too.
This was not about fairness.
It was about control.
Judith looked at the document case.
“Give me the schedule.”
“No.”
Daniel’s answer was immediate.
Judith smiled.
“Then your company may collapse.”
Daniel shrugged.
“If that is the price.”
Everyone stared at him.
Even Judith.
Daniel continued.
“I can rebuild a company.”
He looked toward the safe room.
“I don’t get to rebuild Sophie’s childhood.”
For the first time, Judith had no response.
Sirens approached outside.
Thomas had restored the gate.
Judith looked toward the windows.
Then at Vanessa.
“You called them?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I did.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Judith’s expression finally cracked.
“You think this ends with me?”
Daniel stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Judith looked toward Eric.
“Ask him where his father really is.”
Eric’s face drained of color.
Judith smiled.
“He isn’t dead.”
Silence.
“He never disappeared.”
Eric stared.
“Where is he?”
Judith turned toward the approaching officers.
“Michael Reed has been watching all of you for years.”
Daniel’s blood chilled.
“And if you found Emily’s final recording…”
May you like
She looked directly at him.
“…then he already knows you found the trust.”
