Chapter 15 - Michael Reed

Michael Reed walked into Margaret’s office the next morning.

No one invited him.

He was sixty-eight.

Gray hair.

Navy coat.

Calm eyes.

Eric stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

“Dad?”

Michael looked at him.

“Hello, Eric.”

Eric crossed the room and stopped.

He seemed unable to decide whether to embrace him or hit him.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I let you think I left.”

“That’s not better.”

Michael accepted that.

Daniel stood near the conference table.

“You have ten seconds to explain why I shouldn’t have security remove you.”

Michael looked at the original trust.

“Because that document alone won’t save Sophie’s inheritance.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Save it from whom?”

“The banks.”

Margaret frowned.

“Explain.”

Michael removed a folder.

“Judith leveraged Vanessa’s schedule as collateral.”

“We know.”

“She also leveraged Sophie’s.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

“Forged guardian approvals.”

“Whose signature?”

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Yours.”

Daniel went cold.

Eric grabbed the file.

He examined the documents.

“These signatures look perfect.”

“They were copied from corporate filings.”

Daniel remembered the restructuring package.

“Eric’s documents.”

Michael nodded.

Eric snapped.

“I didn’t forge this.”

“I know.”

Eric stared at his father.

“You know?”

“I’ve been following the transactions.”

“For how long?”

“Thirteen years.”

Eric laughed bitterly.

“Father of the year.”

Michael looked wounded but did not defend himself.

Daniel stepped in.

“Why disappear?”

“To protect evidence.”

“From Judith?”

“From everyone.”

Michael looked toward Vanessa.

“Including her.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Michael continued.

“Caroline asked me to rebuild the entire financial record.”

“Why secretly?”

“Because Judith’s husband had contacts inside the family’s bank.”

Daniel frowned.

“He died years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Then why stay hidden?”

Michael looked at Eric.

“Because my son found me.”

Eric froze.

“When?”

“Eleven years ago.”

Eric shook his head.

“No.”

“You were drunk.”

Eric stared.

“You told me you had destroyed the Reedwell family.”

Michael’s face tightened.

“You begged me to disappear because you had started working for Daniel.”

Eric’s breathing changed.

Memory was returning.

Daniel watched.

Eric sat slowly.

“I thought…”

Michael finished.

“You thought if Daniel learned who I was, you’d lose your career.”

Eric covered his face.

Daniel felt disgust and pity at once.

“So Emily was right.”

Michael nodded.

“Eric helped bury information.”

Eric looked up.

“I never touched Sophie.”

Daniel’s stare turned ice-cold.

“No one is giving you a medal for that.”

Eric looked away.

Michael continued.

“Eric concealed records.”

“Did he move money?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Did Judith?”

“Yes.”

Daniel pointed toward Michael.

“And you?”

Michael met his eyes.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Daniel almost laughed.

“Of course.”

“I moved funds to protect assets from Judith.”

“Everyone has a noble explanation.”

Michael nodded.

“That is why explanations are worthless without records.”

He opened the folder.

Complete transaction history.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

Judith had borrowed against both trusts.

Vanessa had unknowingly moved money to cover gaps.

Eric had hidden irregularities to protect his father’s past.

Michael had moved assets into temporary accounts.

Emily had borrowed twenty-five thousand dollars from Vanessa’s schedule and repaid it two years later with interest.

The family had torn itself apart over secrets layered on secrets.

Daniel stared at the pages.

“What do we do?”

Margaret answered.

“Freeze every trust account.”

Michael nodded.

“File corrected ownership records.”

“And my company?”

Eric looked at Daniel.

“Hart Development is exposed.”

“How badly?”

“If lenders believe your initial capitalization came from disputed assets, they could call loans.”

Daniel thought of thousands of employees.

He could not simply walk away.

Michael slid another folder forward.

“Emily anticipated that.”

Daniel stared.

“What now?”

“She created a separation agreement.”

Margaret opened it.

Hart Development could repay the original Reedwell contribution at market-adjusted value.

No ownership claim.

No trust control.

No collapse.

Daniel almost smiled.

“Emily solved it.”

Michael shook his head.

“She gave you a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Repay the trust.”

Daniel nodded.

“Obviously.”

“Or merge Hart Development into Reedwell and become its managing trustee.”

Daniel stared.

That would make him more powerful than ever.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You could control everything.”

Daniel thought of Sophie asking permission for toast.

He closed the merger page.

“No.”

Eric looked surprised.

Daniel signed the repayment instruction.

“I don’t want everything.”

Michael watched him.

“What do you want?”

Daniel looked toward the family photograph on Margaret’s shelf.

“My daughter to know that people matter more than what they own.”

His phone vibrated.

A message from Rosa.

SOPHIE IS ASKING FOR YOU.

Daniel smiled slightly.

Then another message appeared.

SHE SAYS THERE IS A MAN OUTSIDE WHO LOOKS LIKE MR. MICHAEL.

Daniel slowly looked up.

Michael was standing directly in front of him.

Eric saw his expression.

“What?”

Daniel turned the phone around.

Michael read it.

His face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel’s pulse accelerated.

“Apparently not.”

Michael whispered.

“My brother.”

Vanessa went pale.

“You never said you had a brother.”

Michael looked toward the door.

“I didn’t.”

Daniel stood.

“Why?”

May you like

Michael’s voice was barely audible.

“Because he is the reason Caroline disappeared in the first place.”
