Chapter 8 - The First Lie

Daniel did not let Judith into the house.
He met her on the front terrace with two security officers present.
Judith placed the birth certificate on the stone table between them.
Daniel did not touch it.
“What are you suggesting?”
“I’m not suggesting anything.”
She sat.
“I’m telling you Emily was afraid long before Sophie was born.”
Daniel stared.
“Afraid of you?”
Judith laughed softly.
“No.”
“Then who?”
“My daughter.”
“Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
Daniel did not understand.
“Why would Emily invite Vanessa into our lives after her death if she feared her?”
“She didn’t.”
Judith leaned forward.
“You hired Vanessa.”
“After multiple references.”
“References she fabricated.”
Daniel looked away.
That sounded possible now.
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa believed Emily stole the Reedwell inheritance.”
Daniel’s patience thinned.
“I know that.”
“You know the easy version.”
“Then give me the hard one.”
Judith’s expression changed.
“Vanessa believed Sophie was the reason the trust became permanently unreachable.”
Daniel frowned.
“She was a baby.”
“Exactly.”
Judith tapped the certificate.
“When Sophie was born, Emily changed the trust.”
“How?”
“She made Sophie the sole irrevocable beneficiary.”
Daniel stared.
“Which meant Vanessa could never challenge it through Emily again.”
“Yes.”
Daniel leaned back.
“That still doesn’t explain the birth certificate.”
Judith looked at him.
“Emily initially listed her family surname in Sophie’s confidential hospital records.”
“Hart?”
“No.”
Daniel went still.
“Hale.”
He stared at Judith.
“What?”
“Emily’s legal birth name was Emily Hale.”
Daniel stood.
“That’s impossible.”
“She took her mother’s second husband’s surname as a teenager.”
Daniel’s mind raced.
Emily had always been Emily Carter before marriage.
At least that was what he believed.
Judith continued.
“The Hale family split into two branches.”
“Yours and Emily’s.”
“Yes.”
“So Vanessa wasn’t a distant cousin.”
“No.”
Judith’s voice softened.
“She was Emily’s half sister.”
Daniel stared at her.
The world seemed to tilt.
“You lied.”
“I withheld it.”
“That’s lying.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa begged me not to tell anyone.”
Daniel laughed once without humor.
“And you listened?”
“She is my daughter.”
“She tormented mine.”
Judith looked down.
“I know.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Did you help her?”
“I helped investigate the trust.”
“Did you help enter my house?”
“No.”
“Did you know she was withholding food from Sophie?”
“No.”
Daniel searched her face.
He could no longer tell truth from performance.
“What does this have to do with M?”
Judith looked toward the mansion.
“M was the person who helped Vanessa get hired.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“I don’t know the full name.”
“You said you knew.”
“I know what M stands for.”
Daniel waited.
“Michael.”
Daniel frowned.
He knew dozens.
Judith continued.
“Michael Reed.”
The surname hit first.
Vanessa had used Reed.
“Who is he?”
Judith looked at him with something close to pity.
“Your late wife’s estate manager.”
Daniel stared.
“Emily never had an estate manager named Michael.”
“She did before she married you.”
Judith slid another photograph across the table.
Daniel looked.
The man beside Emily from Vanessa’s office.
Mark.
Or Michael.
“His full name was Michael Reed.”
Daniel’s pulse increased.
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared thirteen years ago.”
“Dead?”
“No one knows.”
Daniel looked at the old photo again.
Hart Development can begin when Daniel is ready.
Michael had been involved before the company existed.
“Why would he help Vanessa now?”
Judith shook her head.
“I don’t think he is helping Vanessa.”
“Then what?”
“I think Vanessa is afraid of him.”
Daniel remembered the messages.
YOU PROMISED SOPHIE WOULD NEVER BE HURT.
IF DANIEL FINDS OUT, I’M DONE.
Maybe M was not a co-conspirator.
Maybe M was supervising.
Controlling.
Threatening.
Daniel hated the uncertainty.
His phone rang.
Margaret.
He answered immediately.
“Daniel.”
Her voice was strained.
“What?”
“Sophie remembered something.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
“She asked for the silver bracelet.”
“I have it.”
“No.”
Margaret paused.
“She says there were two.”
Daniel looked toward Vanessa’s office.
“Two bracelets?”
“One belonged to Emily.”
“What about the other?”
“Sophie says Vanessa wore the same one.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Identical?”
“Almost.”
“What’s different?”
“One has a heart.”
Daniel looked at the bracelet he had found.
The tiny heart charm.
“And the other?”
“A key.”
Daniel’s mind jumped to Sophie’s memory.
The silver key.
Emily’s clue.
“Where is Sophie?”
“With me.”
“Ask her where she saw Vanessa’s bracelet last.”
He heard Margaret speak gently in the background.
Then silence.
Then Margaret returned.
“She says Vanessa put it inside the big bear.”
Daniel turned.
The giant teddy bear was still lying where it had fallen in the hallway.
He approached it slowly.
There was a zipper along its back.
Daniel opened it.
He reached inside the stuffing.
His fingers touched metal.
He pulled out a second silver bracelet.
A tiny silver key hung from the clasp.
Judith stood behind him.
“My God.”
Daniel examined the charm.
It was not a charm.
It was an actual key.
Tiny.
Functional.
A number was engraved along the shaft.
Judith whispered.
“Safe-deposit box.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You recognize it?”
“No.”
But her expression said otherwise.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Judith backed away.
“Daniel.”
“What is box 314?”
She stared at the key.
Then she finally answered.
“The last time anyone opened it, Emily was still alive.”
Daniel said nothing.
Judith continued.
“And when she came out of the bank that day, she told me one thing.”
“What?”
May you like
Judith looked directly into his eyes.
“She said if she died unexpectedly, Daniel Hart should never be allowed to see what was inside.”
