Chapter 13 - Emily’s Last Message

Daniel arrived at the guesthouse to find Sophie sitting safely beside Rosa.

The white teddy bear rested on the table.

Security had already inspected it.

Inside its back seam was a tiny digital recorder.

Daniel recognized it.

Emily used one for voice notes.

Sophie pointed.

“Mommy talks.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“Do you want to hear it with me?”

Sophie nodded.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Emily’s voice.

“Hi, my sweet Sophie.”

Sophie smiled instantly.

Daniel nearly broke.

“If Daddy is listening too, tell him I’m sorry I made this so complicated.”

Daniel laughed through tears.

Sophie looked at him.

“Mommy knew you.”

“She did.”

Emily continued.

“The papers everyone is searching for are not the most important thing.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“The important thing is why they are searching.”

A pause.

“Money can make frightened people cruel.”

Sophie rested her head against Daniel’s arm.

Emily’s voice softened.

“Vanessa is angry.”

Vanessa stood near the doorway and closed her eyes.

“She believes our grandmother chose me over her.”

Emily continued.

“She is wrong.”

Vanessa looked up.

“Our grandmother created separate protections for both of us.”

Vanessa whispered.

“What?”

Daniel turned.

Emily’s voice continued.

“Vanessa has an inheritance too.”

Vanessa sat down abruptly.

“She never knew because Judith hid it.”

Everyone looked at the door as if Judith might somehow be listening.

Emily explained that a second trust had been created for Vanessa.

Judith had borrowed against it illegally.

If Vanessa discovered the truth, she would know the entire family conflict had been manufactured.

Vanessa covered her face.

“All these years.”

Daniel watched her.

Sympathy tried to appear.

Then he remembered Sophie beside the dog bowl.

Understanding did not equal forgiveness.

Emily continued.

“Daniel, if Sophie is in danger, trust Margaret with the legal documents.”

Margaret exhaled.

“Trust Michael with the accounting trail.”

Eric looked away.

“And trust your own instincts about everyone else.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Then Emily said something unexpected.

“Do not trust Eric simply because Michael is his father.”

Eric froze.

“He wants to be better than his father.”

Daniel looked at him.

“But wanting is not the same as being.”

Eric’s jaw tightened.

Emily continued.

“If Eric is involved, make him prove which side he chose.”

The recording paused.

Then came the final instruction.

“The original Reedwell trust is in Sophie’s bedroom.”

Daniel stared.

“I hid it in plain sight.”

Sophie looked at him.

“Where?”

Emily answered.

“Behind the place where Sophie measures how tall she’s getting.”

Daniel stood immediately.

The growth chart.

Emily had painted one directly onto the bedroom wall.

A tree with numbered branches.

Daniel had nearly painted over it during renovations.

Vanessa had stopped him.

He turned toward her.

“You knew.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I only knew Emily loved it.”

They returned to the mansion.

Daniel entered Sophie’s bedroom alone first.

The painted tree still stood beside the closet.

He ran his hand along the wood trim.

At four feet, a panel moved.

Behind it was a narrow document tube.

Margaret opened it.

The original trust.

The final page contained the sentence.

A family is safest when love cannot be purchased.

Margaret almost laughed from relief.

“This is it.”

Vanessa stared at the beneficiary sections.

Then she found her own name.

A separate attached schedule.

Her face crumpled.

Judith had spent twenty years telling Vanessa that Emily inherited everything.

It had been a lie.

Vanessa had been wealthy on paper since she turned twenty-five.

Her mother had hidden it.

Eric looked over her shoulder.

“This changes everything.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“It changes money.”

He looked toward Sophie.

“It doesn’t change what happened.”

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I know.”

Daniel turned to Margaret.

“Secure the documents.”

She nodded.

Eric checked his phone.

Then frowned.

“What?”

Daniel asked.

“The Zurich flight.”

“Judith boarded?”

“No.”

Eric looked up.

“She canceled it.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

Vanessa whispered.

“Why?”

A sound came from downstairs.

Glass breaking.

Security shouted.

Daniel grabbed Sophie and moved her toward the safe room.

Then the mansion intercom activated.

Judith’s voice filled the hallway.

“Vanessa.”

Vanessa went pale.

“Mom?”

Judith spoke again.

“You found the real trust.”

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling speakers.

Daniel realized the mansion system had been compromised.

Judith continued.

“Now bring it to me.”

Margaret clutched the document tube.

Daniel looked toward security.

“Trace the signal.”

Judith laughed through the speakers.

“I’m closer than you think.”

Then every exterior door locked at once.

May you like

The lights flickered.

And the fire alarm began to scream.
