Chapter 3: Descent into the Shadows

The service stairs led deep into the subterranean tunnels beneath the estate—a remnant of the prohibition era. The air was damp and smelled of decaying earth. Elena leaned heavily against the cold brick wall, clutching her swollen belly, her face pale in the dim light of Daniel’s flashlight.

"I can't... the baby," Elena whispered, her knees buckling.

Rosa caught her, lowering her gently to the floor. "Breathe, Elena. We are not dying tonight. I promised your husband I would protect you, and I intend to keep that promise." Rosa looked up at Daniel, her eyes fierce. "Alejandro will lock down the city. He controls the police, the docks, the airports. Where do we go?"

"I know a place," Daniel replied, reloading his weapon. "An old safehouse in the industrial district. Alejandro thinks it was burned down years ago. But we need proof of what you said, Rosa. Without proof, Elena is just a target, and this child is a ghost."

"The proof exists," Rosa said, helping Elena back to her feet. "A marriage certificate and a sealed will. But it’s not here. It’s hidden in the city archives, logged under a fake name."
