In the distance, the muffled wail of approaching sirens echoed down the subterranean tunnel. The authorities were coming, tipped off by the massive data dump.
"Time to go," Maya said to her operatives. They turned and vanished into the shadows, leaving Regina alone in the vault.
Regina had seconds. If the police found her here, she would be arrested. If the cartel found her first, she would be dead. She dropped the useless documents, keeping only a small velvet pouch of untraceable conflict diamonds hidden in the briefcase's false bottom.

She sprinted out of the vault, ignoring the main exit, and made for the depository’s maintenance tunnels. She plunged into the damp, rat-infested darkness, the high heels of her designer shoes long abandoned. She ran barefoot over broken glass and concrete, the physical pain a dull ache compared to the agonizing collapse of her empire.
Behind her, she heard the heavy thud of police boots breaching the main doors. She crawled through a rusted grate, bursting out into the freezing waters of the city's storm drain system, pushing herself forward through pure, venomous willpower.
