Chapter 1 - THE BEDROOM DOOR

The champagne flutes made a delicate sound downstairs, but upstairs, everything was painfully quiet.
Emma Carter sat on the edge of her daughter Lily's bed, staring at the open bedroom door.
Lily was six years old.
She slept peacefully beneath a white blanket, one small hand wrapped around her stuffed bunny.
Emma should have felt relieved.
Instead, every instinct inside her screamed that something was wrong.
She tightened her grip around her phone.
Her parents-in-law, Margaret and Richard, stood in the doorway.
Richard was holding a champagne glass.
Margaret had her arms crossed.
Neither of them looked at Lily with affection.
They looked at Emma.
"You need to calm down," Margaret said.
Emma shook her head.
"Stay back."
Richard frowned.
"Emma, we're not here to hurt anyone."
"Then stay in the hallway."
Her voice trembled, but she didn't lower her hand.
Margaret's expression hardened.
"This is ridiculous."
Emma glanced at Lily.
Six months earlier, she had trusted these people completely.
They had smiled at family dinners.
They had bought Lily expensive presents.
They had told everyone Emma was lucky to have married into their family.
But three weeks ago, Emma discovered something that changed everything.
Someone had been accessing Lily's medical records.
Someone had been making strange calls to Lily's school.
Someone had been trying to convince Emma that she was becoming an unstable mother.
And every trail seemed to lead back to Margaret.
Emma had confronted her husband, Daniel.
He had told her she was imagining things.
Then Daniel had stopped answering her calls.
Tonight, Emma had found a hidden folder on Daniel's laptop.
Inside were copies of Lily's documents.
A custody agreement.
A medical authorization.
And a transfer of money to a private investigator.
Emma had barely finished reading when Margaret appeared upstairs.
Now both adults were standing between her and the hallway.
Emma quietly unlocked her phone.
Her thumb pressed the emergency call button.
Margaret noticed.
"Put that phone down."
Emma stared at her.
"No."
The word came out stronger than she expected.
Lily shifted beneath the blanket.
Emma immediately moved closer to her.
Richard took one step forward.
Emma raised her palm.
"Don't."
He stopped.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the phone connected.
Emma whispered into it.
"My daughter and I need help."
Margaret's face changed.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid.
And Emma realized something.
They weren't angry because she had called for help.
They were afraid of what she was about to tell the authorities.

The bedroom door suddenly became the most important line in the house.
And Emma was prepared to defend it.
